OPENING THE BONNET

From inside: pull the handle on theleft-hand side under the fascia.

From outside: lift the catch andraise the bonnet.

Bonnet struts

These open the bonnet and hold itopen.

To close

Lower the bonnet and release it atthe end of its travel. Check that thebonnet is properly locked.

FILLING WITH FUEL

Fill with fuel with the engine switchedoff.

To open the fuel filler flap, firmly pullthe handle on the floor on the outsideof the driver's seat.

If you are filling up your tank, do notcontinue after the 3rd cut-off of thepump; this could cause your vehicleto malfunction.

The capacity of the tank is approxi-mately 15.4 gallons (70 litres).

A filler cap hook is provided onthe inside of the fuel filler flap.

Filling the LPG tank

(Capacity, approximately 46 litres)– switch off the ignition,– unscrew the cap protecting the

filler opening,– lock the filler nozzle onto the

opening (if necessary, screw theappropriate adapter*, located inthe insulated compartment, ontothe filler opening first),

– push the button on the pump,– once filling has stopped automati-

cally, unlock the filler nozzle,– screw the protective cap back

onto the filler opening.

* According to destination.

Petrol gauge

When the low petrol level indicatorcomes on, fill the tank without delayas the engine can only start usingpetrol. Furthermore, a low petrollevel may result in fuel circuit faults.

Gas gauge

If the outside temperature is high,the gas level indicated by the fuelgauge may be slightly higher thanthe actual level.

Safety advice

The safety valve must beclosed before any main-

tenance or repair work is carriedout on your vehicle. To close it,switch off the ignition.Ensure that there is no risk thatthe loads carried may damagethe tank.

Testing the tank

Decree of 18/01/43 and applica-tion of article 3 of the A.M. of24/11/82.The maximum interval betweensuccessive tests is eight years.However, the test must be repeatedwhenever the vehicle is sold, ifthis sale takes place more than 5 years following the last test.It is imperative that any work onthe LPG feed system is carriedout by a PEUGEOT dealer.

Lift the lever and slide the seat forwards or backwards.2 - Seat cushion angle adjustment

Pull the telescopic handle forwards and pivot it up ordown.

4 - Seat back angle adjustmentTurn the knob to obtain the best angle.

5 - Head restraint height and tilt adjustment

The settting is correct when the top of the headrestraint is level with the top of the head.

To raise the head restraint, pull it upwards.To lower the head restraint, it is necessary to pushsimultaneously:– the button on the left-hand side on top of the seat

back,– the head restraint downwards.The head restraint has a frame with notches whichprevents it from dropping down (safety device in caseof impact).To remove the head restraint, press the tab.Warning: never drive with the head restraints removed.They must be in place and correctly adjusted.

6 - Front armrestsThe front armrests can be folded or removed.To remove them, press the button between the armrestand the side of the seat and pull the armrest.

Recalling a memorised position• Door open and ignition off

Within ten minutes of switching offthe ignition and opening the door, ashort press on button 1 or 2 recallsthe memorised position of the seat,then of the exterior mirrors.

• Door closed or ignition on:– keeping the button pressed

adjusts the seat and the exteriormirrors.When adjustment is completed ableep will sound.


Memorising the seat andmirror positions

Two driving positions can be memo-rised.

To memorise:– place the ignition key in the acces-

sories position;– adjust your seat and mirrors;– simultaneously press button "M"

and button "1" for the first drivingposition or button "2" for the second driving position.When the position has been memorised, you will hear twobleeps.Memorising a new position cancelsthe previous one.

Heated seat controlsPress the switch.The temperature is controlled auto-matically.Pressing a second time stops opera-tion.

Rules for transporting childrenon the front passenger seat**

Children under the age of 10 must nottravel in the forwards facing position,unless the rear seats are already occu-pied by other children or the rear seatscannot be used (absent or folded). Inthis case, adjust the front passengerseat to the most rearward position andleave the passenger air bag armed.The transportation of children in therearwards facing position is permit-ted. In this position, it is essential todisarm the passenger air bag. Other-wise, the child would risk being killedor seriously injured if the air bagwere to inflate.

GENERAL POINTS RELATING TO CHILD SEATS

Although one of PEUGEOT's main criteria when designing your vehicle, the safetyof your children also depends on you.For maximum safety, please follow these precautions:

– Since 1992, all children under the age of 10 must travel in approved childseats* suited to their weight, on seats fitted with a seat belt.In order to recognise a child seat which conforms to current legislation, checkthat it bears an orange label indicating the weight range for its use andits approval number.

– A child weighing less than 9 kg must travel in the rearwards facing positionboth in the front and in the rear. PEUGEOT recommends that children shouldtravel in the "rearwards facing" position up to the age of two.

– Statistically, the safest seats in your vehicle for the transportation of childrenare the rear seats. PEUGEOT recommends that children travel in the rear evenwhen a "rearwards facing" child seat is used.

– If a child is travelling on a booster seat, check that the lap section of the seat beltpasses over the child's thighs correctly. The chest section of the seat belt mustbe positioned on the child's shoulder without touching the neck. PEUGEOTrecommends that you use a booster seat with a back, fitted with a seat belt guide.

– Remember to fasten the seat belt or the child seat harness keeping the slackin relation to the child's body to a minimum, even for short journeys.

"ISOFIX" MOUNTINGS

The one third side of the rear seat ofyour vehicle is fitted with ISOFIXmountings. These are 2 rings locat-ed between the seat back and seatcushion of your vehicle.

The ISOFIX child seats are fittedwith 2 locks which fit onto theserings.

The ISOFIX child seat approved forPEUGEOT vehicles and sold by thePEUGEOT network is the ISOFIXKIDDY* child seat. It can beinstalled in the rearwards facingposition from birth to 13 kg and inthe forwards facing position from9 to 18 kg.

In the front, in the rearwards facingposition, the front passenger seatmust be moved as far forwards aspossible so that the shell of the childseat is in contact with, or as close aspossible to, the fascia.

In the rear, in the forwards facingposition, the front passenger seatmust be in the intermediate longitu-dinal position, with the seat backupright.

The ISOFIX KIDDY child seat mayalso be used where there are noIsofix mountings. In this case it iscompulsory to attach it to the vehi-cle's seat using the three-point seatbelt for both the rearwards facingand forwards facing positions.

If the ISOFIX KIDDY seat is fittedin the rearwards facing positionon the front passenger seat, it isessential to disarm the passengerair bag.

Follow the instructions for fittingthe child seat indicated in theseat manufacturer's installationinstructions.

Refer to the "Summary table for theinstallation of child seats".

* You can only secure ISOFIX childseats, approved by PEUGEOT andsold by its network, on your vehicle'sISOFIX mountings.

CHILD SEATS RECOMMENDED BY PEUGEOTIn addition to the ISOFIX child seats, PEUGEOT offers a complete range of child seats which are secured using the seat belt.These child seats have been assessed in impact conditions in PEUGEOT vehicles and guarantee optimum safety for your children:

Group 0+: from birth to 13 kg

L1 - "Britax Babysure": installed in the rear-facing position using a three-point seat belt. In the front, it is compulsory to disarm the passenger air bag.

Group 1: from 9 to 18 kg

L2 - "Römer Prince": installed using a two or three-point seat belt.For the safety of your child, the seat and the restraining cushion must never be separated.

Group 2: from 15 to 25 kg

L3 - "Römer Vario'': installed using a two or three-point seat belt.

Never leave one or more chil-dren alone and unsupervisedin a vehicle.Never leave a child or an ani-

mal in a vehicle which is exposed to thesun and has the windows closed.To protect your young children from thesun, fit blinds on the rear windows.Never leave the keys within reach ofchildren inside the vehicle.

Disarm the passenger air bag wheninstalling a "rearwards facing" child seaton the front passenger seat. Otherwise,the child would risk being killed or seri-ously injured were the air bag to inflate.Observe strictly the recommendationsfor assembling and securing the childseat as shown in the child seat instruc-tions.To prevent the doors from opening acci-dentally, use the child lock*.Also, do not open the rear windowsmore than a third*.

Groups 2 and 3: from 15 to 36 kg

L4 - "Recaro Start'': installed using a three-point seat belt.The height and width of the seat back and length of the seat cushion mustbe adjusted according to the age and build of your child.

L5 - "Klippan Optima": installed using a three-point seat belt.From the age of 6 years (approximately 22 kg), the booster is used on its own.

SEAT BELTS

To adjust the height of the frontseat belts

Pinch control 1 and slide it.

To lock the seat belts

Pull the strap, then insert the buckleinto the stalk.

Pre-tensioning and force-limitingfront seat belts

Safety in the event of a frontal impacthas been improved by the introductionof pre-tensioning and force-limitingfront seat belts. Depending on theseriousness of the impact, the pre-tensioning system instantly tightensthe seat belt firmly against the bodyof the occupant.

The pre-tensioning seat belts areactive when the ignition is on.

The force-limiting device reduces thepressure of the seat belt against theoccupant's body in the event of anaccident.

Rear seat belts

The three rear seats are all fitted withthree-point inertia reel belts.


To be effective, a seatbelt must be tightened asclose to the body aspossible.

Depending on the nature and theseriousness of the impact, thepre-tensioners may be triggeredbefore and independently of theair bags.In all cases, the air bag warninglight comes on.Following a collision, have thesystem checked by a PEUGEOTdealer.

zling and are prohibited.Do not forget to switch them offwhen they are no longerneeded.

AUTOMATIC SWITCHING ONOF THE LIGHTSSide lights and dipped beam head-lamps switch on automatically if thelight is poor, or during continuousoperation of the windscreen wipers.They switch off as soon as the lightbecomes bright enough or the wind-screen wipers stop.This function is active when the vehicleis supplied to the customer.To disarm or activate the function:☞ Place the key in the accessories

position (1st notch),☞ Press the end of the lights stalk

for more than two seconds.

Note: In foggy weather, the bright-ness sensor can detect sufficientlight. Because of this, the lights donot come on automatically.

Do not cover the brightness sen-sor connected to the rain sensor,located in the windscreen behindthe mirror. It is used for automaticswitching on of the lights.

Operating check

Activation

Activation of this function is accom-panied by an audible signal and themessage "Automatic lighting ofthe headlamps activated" on themultifunction display.

Note: Always operate the lightingcontrols manually where this is pos-sible.

DisarmingDisarming of the function is accom-panied by an audible signal and themessage "Automatic lighting ofthe headlamps deactivated" on themultifunction display.

When driving, if this function isswitched off when the headlampswould switch on in automatic mode,the lights remain on. It is howeverpossible to disarm this function andswitch off the lights by:– manually switching off the lights

using the lights stalk,– switching off the engine.


If the brightness sensor does notfunction correctly, the system acti-vates the function (the lights come on).The driver is alerted by the flashing ofthe ''dipped beam'' warning light on theinstrument panel.Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to havethe system checked.

Follow me HomeWhen there is a low level of bright-ness or at night, if you leave yourvehicle, the side lights and thedipped beam lights may remain onfor approximately one minute.To do this:☞ place the lights stalk in the AUTO

position,☞ place the key in the accessories

position (first notch),☞ press the end of the lights stalk for

more than two seconds,☞ place the lights stalk in the 0 posi-

tion,☞ flash the headlamps,☞ get out of the car and lock it.

Operating check

Switching onActivation of the function is accom-panied by the message "Automaticwindscreen wiper actuated" on themultifunction display.In the event of malfunction in theAUTO position, the windscreenwiper will operate in downgrademode.Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to havethe system checked.


Do not mask the raindetector located on thewindscreen behind theinterior mirror.

If you take the vehicle to an auto-matic car wash, switch off the igni-tion or check that the windscreenwiper stalk is not in the automaticposition.

In Winter, it is advisable to wait forcomplete de-icing of the wind-screen before switching on theautomatic wipe.

Windscreen and headlamp wash

Pull the windscreen wiper stalktowards you. The windscreen washthen the windscreen wipers operatefor a fixed period.

The windscreen wash and head-lamp wash operate simultaneouslyfor two seconds, only if the head-lamps are on.

THE AUTOMATIC AUTOADAPTIVE GEARBOX

Moving OffTo move off from position P:☞ It is essential to press the brake pedal to exit position P (shift lock)☞ Select the required function (R, D, 3, 2 or 1), then gradually release the pressure on the brake pedal; the vehi-

cle will move off immediately.You can also move off from position N:☞ Release the handbrake, with your foot on the brake. ☞ Select the required function (R, D, 3, 2 or 1) then gradually release the pressure on the brake pedal; the vehi-

cle will move off immediately. The four speed automatic gearbox provides the comfort of integral automatic regulation, enhanced by a sportprogramme (switch A) and a snow programme (switch B).

Gear selection gate ☞ Move the lever in the gate to select one of the functions.

Once it has been selected, the indicator light for that function illuminates on the instrument panel.Park: for parking the vehicle and starting the engine, with the handbrake on or off.Reverse: for reversing. Select this function with the vehicle stationary and the engine at idle.Neutral: for starting the engine and for parking, with the handbrake on.Drive: for driving in autoadaptive mode (automatic changing of the four gears).3: for urban driving or driving on winding roads (automatic changing of the first three gears only).2: for driving on mountain roads or for towing a trailer (automatic changing of the first two gears only).1: for tackling steep gradients (selection of first gear only).

Lightingrheostat

With the lights on, press the button tovary the intensity of the lighting of theinstruments and controls. When thelighting reaches the minimum (ormaximum) setting, release the but-ton then press it again to increase (orreduce) the brightness.

As soon as the lighting is of therequired brightness, release the button.

Trip recorderzero reset

With the ignition on, press the button.

After switching on the ignition, three functions are shown in succession:– engine oil level indicator,– service indicator,– total distance recorder.

Engine oil level

When the ignition is switched on, the engine oil level indicator is displayed for approximately five seconds, then the service indicator is displayed for five seconds.

Maximum

Use the dipstick to confirm the level on the indicator; a surplus ofoil can cause damage to the engine.Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

Minimum

Check the level with the dipstick and top it up. The indication isonly correct if the vehicle has been on stable, level ground, withthe engine stopped, for 10 minutes.

No oil

It is essential to top up the oil to the correct level, otherwise thereis a risk the engine will be damaged.

Pressing the button on the end of the wash/wipe stalk enables the following datato be displayed:

Periods "1" and "2" are defined by the frequency of the zeroreset. They allow, for instance, daily calculations over period"1" and monthly calculations over period "2".

Range

The display shows the distance thatcan still be covered with the fuelremaining in the tank. Note: this figure may rise if there is achange in driving style or road sur-face, causing a significant drop incurrent fuel consumption.If there are less than 3 litres of fuel inthe tank, only three segments will bedisplayed.

Average consumption

This is the ratio between the amountof fuel consumed and the distancetravelled since the computer was lastreset to zero.

Current fuel consumption

This gives the fuel consumptionrecorded during the last two sec-onds. This function is only displayedwhen the vehicle is travelling at morethan 12 mph (20 km/h).

Average speed

This is obtained by dividing the dis-tance travelled by the period of timethe vehicle has been in use (with theignition on), since the computer waslast reset to zero.

Distance travelled

This shows the distance travelledsince the computer was last reset tozero.

After the trip computer has beenreset to zero, the range databecomes meaningful only after thevehicle has been in use for a certainperiod.

CRUISE CONTROL

Cruise control enables the vehicle to maintain a steady speed pro-grammed by the driver, regardless of the road characteristics and withoutthe driver having to touch the accelerator or brake pedals.In order for it to be memorised, the vehicle speed must be greater than25 mph (40 km/h) or 37 mph (60 km/h), depending on the engine, withat least 4th gear engaged (2nd gear for the automatic gearbox).

Operation

☞ Place switch 1 in the ON position.A speed can now be memorised.☞ Place switch 1 in the OFF position to de-activate the system.

Memorising a speed

As soon as you reach the chosen speed, press button 2 or 3. Thismemorises the speed, which will be maintained automatically.Note: It is possible to accelerate momentarily without disarming thecruise control.

Cancelling the memorised speed

If you wish to cancel the memorised speed:☞ Press button 4 or the brake or clutch pedal.

Recalling the memorised speed

After cancelling, press button 4. Your vehicle will return to thelast memorised speed.

Changing a memorised speed

To memorise a speed higherthan the previous one:☞ press button 3;☞ release it when you have

1 - Driver's electric window switch.You have two options:

– Manual operation:Press or pull switch 1 gently.The window stops as soon asthe switch is released.

– Automatic operation: Press or pull switch 1 fully. Thewindow opens or closes com-pletely when the switch isreleased. Pressing the switchagain stops the movement of thewindow.


Safety auto-reverseWhen the window on the driver'sside rises and meets an obstacle,it stops and partially lowersagain.

Notes:In the case of unwanted openingof the window on closing (forexample, in the case of frost) ifthe window will not rise and goesinto safety auto-reverse mode,lower it completely and raise itagain immediately, by pulling theswitch until the window closescompletely. Continue to press theswitch for approximately one sec-ond after closing.

Following reconnection of thebattery, in the event of a malfunc-tion, you must reinitialise thesafety auto-reverse function:– open the window completely,

then close it, it will rise instages of a few centimetreswith each press, repeat theoperation until the window iscompletely closed,

– continue to press the switch forat least one second after reach-ing this position.

The safety auto-reverse func-tion is not operational duringthese operations.

In the event of contact when operatingthe windows, you must reverse themovement of the window. Automatic day/night interior mirror

This automatically and gradually changes between the day and night positions.To prevent dazzling, the glass of the mirror darkens automatically depending onthe intensity of the light from behind. It clears as the light (headlamps of follow-ing vehicles, sunlight) decreases, ensuring maximum visibility.

Operation

Switch on the ignition and press switch 1:– Indicator light 2 lit (switch pressed): automatic operation.– Indicator light 2 off: automatic system off. The mirror remains at its most clear.

Special feature

To ensure maximum visibility during manoeuvres, the mirror clears automaticallywhen reverse gear is engaged.

THE ABS ANTI-LOCKBRAKING SYSTEM

When used with approved tyres ingood condition, the ABS increasesthe stability and manoeuvrability ofyour vehicle, particularly on poor orslippery road surfaces.

The anti-lock braking system comesinto operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

EMERGENCY BRAKING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM

In an emergency, this systemenables the optimum braking pres-sure to be reached more quickly,thus reducing the stopping distance.It is triggered by the speed at whichthe brake pedal is activated. Theeffect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and anincrease in braking efficiency.

The normal operation of the ABSmay make itself felt by slightvibrations of the brake pedal.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR) ANDDYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL(ESP)

These systems are linked and com-plement the ABS.The ASR system optimises drive toprevent the wheels skidding, byacting on the brakes of the drivewheels and on the engine. It alsoallows the directional stability ofthe vehicle to be improved onacceleration.If there is a variation between the tra-jectory followed by the vehicle andthat required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.

Operation of the ASR and ESPsystems

The warning light flashes ifthe ASR or ESP is activated.

HandbrakeApplyingWhen parking, pull the handbrake toimmobilise your vehicle.Warning: when parking on a slope,direct your wheels towards the pave-ment and apply the handbrake.ReleasingPull the handle and press the buttonto release the handbrake.

Disarming the ESP/ASR systems

CHECKING THE LEVELS

Oil level

Check the level regularly and top upbetween changes. Maximum con-sumption is 0.5 litres per 600 miles(1 000 km).

Coolant level

Use the fluid recommended by themanufacturer.When the engine is warm, the tem-perature of the coolant is controlledby the engine fan. Because this fancan operate with the ignition off andbecause the cooling system is pres-surised, wait for at least one hourafter the engine has stopped beforecarrying out any work.

To avoid any risk of burns, slackenthe cap to the first notch to releasethe pressure. When the pressure hasdropped, remove the cap and top upthe level.

Used products

Do not dispose of used oil, brakefluid or coolant down drains or on theground.

Power steering fluid level

Open the reservoir with the enginecold. The level should always beabove the MINI mark, close to theMAXI mark.

Windscreen and headlamp*wash fluid level

CHANGING A WHEEL

Access to the spare wheel and jack

Saloon: lift the boot carpet using thelifting hook. Secure the hook behindthe boot seal.

Estate: unscrew the two carpetretaining screws a quarter turn usingthe ignition key or a coin. Lift the car-pet and secure the retaining hookbehind the tailgate seal.

7-seater estate: fold back the thirdrow seat, then lift the carpet to gainaccess to the spare wheel.

Removal– Park the vehicle on level, stable

and non-slippery ground.– Apply the handbrake, engage first

or reverse gear (position P for theautomatic gearbox).

– Remove the wheel trim using thewheel brace 3 by pulling next to thevalve. For vehicles fitted with alloywheels 8, remove the centre trimby using tool 6 in one of the holes.

– Loosen the wheel bolts.For vehicles with alloy wheels 8,remove the chrome trim caps before-hand (see page on 'special featuresof alloy wheels' in this section).

– The jack is fitted with a systemwhich enables it to be folded orunfolded rapidly. Take the jackfrom the toolkit and fold it by press-ing the ends A. Place the jack atone of the four locations E under-neath the vehicle (as close as pos-sible to the wheel to be changed)and unfold it by pulling the ends A.

– Extend the jack using the wheelbrace 1 and the extension 3.

– Take out a wheel bolt at the topand fit the centralising tool 2.

– Loosen the wheel bolts andremove the wheel.

Fitting a wheel

– Position the wheel using the cen-tralising tool to assist you.

– Tighten the bolts by hand, andremove the centralising tool.

– Partly tighten the bolts using thewheel brace.

– Fold the jack and remove it.

– Fully tighten the wheel bolts usingthe wheel brace.

– Replace the wheel trim, except inthe case of a space-saver wheel,by starting with the valve andpressing on using the palm of yourhand.

For your safety, alwayschange the wheel:

– on level, stable, non-slipperyground,

– with the handbrake applied,– with first or reverse gear

engaged (position P for theautomatic gearbox).

– Never go underneath a vehiclewhich is supported only by ajack (use a ramp).

After changing the wheel– have the tightening of the bolts

and the tyre pressure checkedby a PEUGEOT dealer as soonas possible,

– have the punctured tyre repairedand refit it to the vehicle as soonas possible.

7 seater Estate modelThe space-saver spare wheel fit-ted with a 125/80 R 15 tyre mustonly be used as a short-term mea-sure. Tyre pressure is 61 lb in2(4.2 bars), maximum speed is 50 mph (80 km/h).

Anti-theft bolts*If your wheels are fitted with an anti-theft bolt (one per wheel), the chrometrim and then the plastic cover mustbe removed using tool 7, beforeunscrewing the bolt using one of thetwo anti-theft sockets (which weregiven to you on delivery of your vehi-cle along with the duplicate keys andthe confidential card) and the wheelbrace 1.

Note: make a careful note of the codenumber engraved on the head of theanti-theft socket. This will enable youto obtain duplicate anti-theft socketsfrom a PEUGEOT dealer.

Special features of alloywheels

Bolt covers

Alloy wheel bolts are covered bychrome trims.Use tool 7 to remove the trims beforeslackening the bolts.

Fitting the spare wheel

If your vehicle is fitted with a steelspare wheel, when fitting it, it is normal to notice when tightening thebolts that the washers do not comeinto contact with the rim. The sparewheel is secured by the cone-shapeof each bolt.

Fitting snow tyres

If you fit snow tyres mounted on steelwheels to your vehicle, it is essentialto use special bolts available fromyour PEUGEOT dealer.

THE KEYS

The keys allow you to switch onthe ignition and to independentlyoperate the locks on the frontdoors, the glove box and the pas-senger air bag disarming switch.

Central locking

From the driver's door, the keysallow you to lock and unlock thedoors and the boot.

If one of the front doors is open,the central locking does not work.

The remote control performsthe same functions at a dis-tance.

BATTERY

To charge the battery using a battery charger:– Disconnect the battery,– Follow the instructions for use given by the battery charger manufacturer,– Reconnect starting with the negative (–) terminal,– Check that the terminals and connectors are clean. If they are covered with sul-

phate (white or greenish deposit), disconnect them and clean them.

To start the vehicle from another battery:– Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminals of the two batteries,– Connect one end of the green or black cable to the negative (–) terminal of the

slave battery,– Connect the other end of the green or black cable to an earth point on the bro-

ken down vehicle, as far as possible from the battery,

Operate the starter, let the engine run.

Wait for the engine to return to idle, then disconnect the cables.

– Never disconnect a terminal when the engine is running.– Never charge a battery without first disconnecting the terminals.– Close the sunroof before disconnecting the battery. If it does not

operate normally following re-connection of the battery, you must re-initialise it by turning the control to the maximum tilt position and press-ing it for a few seconds.

– After every reconnection of the battery, switch on the ignition and wait 1 minute before starting to allow the electronic systems to be initialised. Ifslight difficulties are experienced after this, please contact a PEUGEOT deal-er.

It is advisable to disconnect the battery if the vehicle is not to be used for a period of more than one month.

Economy mode

With the engine switched off and theignition key in the "running" or"accessories" position for about halfan hour, certain electrical equipment(displays, instrument panel, warninglights, courtesy lights, electric win-dows, wipers etc.) will switch offautomatically to avoid draining thebattery.

Once the electrical equipment goesinto economy mode, it is necessaryto start the engine to enable theequipment to work again.

Special features of theautomatic gearbox

When towing with four wheels on theground, the following rules must beobeyed:– gear lever in position N,– tow the vehicle at less than 30 mph

TOWING YOUR VEHICLE

Without lifting (4 wheels on the road)You should always use a tow bar.

The towing eye is inside the spare wheel.

From the front:

Lift the cover using the flat part of the towing eye.

Screw in the towing eye until it locks.

From the rear:

Unclip the cover by passing your hand behind the bumper and pushing.

Screw in the towing eye until it locks.

Lifting (2 wheels on the road only)

It is preferable to raise the vehicle by the wheels.

Never use the radiator crossmember.

TOWING A TRAILER, CARAVAN, BOAT ETC.

Only use original PEUGEOT towbars that have been tested andapproved from the design stage ofyour vehicle.

The tow bar must be fitted by aPEUGEOT dealer.

Your vehicle is basically designed fortransporting people and luggage butit may also be used for towing a trailer.

Driving with a trailer subjects thetowing vehicle to more significantstress and its driver must be particu-larly careful.

Air density decreases with altitude,thus reducing engine performance.The maximum towing load must be reduced by 10 % for every 1 000 metres of altitude.

Driving advice

Distribution of loads: Distribute theload in the trailer so that the heaviestitems are as close as possible to theaxle and the nose weight approach-es the maximum permitted withoutexceeding it.

Cooling: Towing a trailer on a slopeincreases the temperature of thecoolant.As the fan is electrically controlled,its cooling capacity is not dependenton the engine speed.On the contrary, use a high gear tolower the engine speed, and reduceyour speed.The maximum towing speed on along slope depends on the gradientand the outside temperature.For vehicles fitted with a direct injec-tion petrol engine, after towing or dri-ving at high speed for a long periodof time, the fan may operate forapproximately 6 minutes.In all cases, pay attention to thecoolant temperature.If the warning light comes on, stopthe vehicle and switch off the engineas soon as possible.

Tyres: Check the tyre pressures ofthe towing vehicle and the trailer,observing the recommended pres-sures.

Brakes: Towing increases the brakingdistance.

Lights: Check the electrical sig-nalling on the trailer.

Side wind: Take into acount theincreased sensitivity to side wind.

The heavy duty luggage net may be installed behind the front seats (in the front position) or behind the rear seats (in therear position).

Luggage net fixings in the front position– Fold down the rear seats (see section on 'Rear seats,

Estate').– Open the corresponding top fixings.– Detach the anchor points.– Locate the ends of the metal bar in these fixings.– Fix the two hooks of the inside straps of the net in the

stowing holes provided on the frame brackets of the rearseats.

– Tighten the two straps.

4 - Air flow adjustment

Turn the knob to obtain sufficientflow.

5 - Air intake control

Recirculation of the interior air (indi-cator light on).

This position prevents the entry ofunpleasant odours or fumes fromoutside and increases the speed ofheating.

Used simultaneously with the airconditioning, recirculation improvesthe performance of the system whenset to hot as well as to cold.

Used in humid conditions, recircula-tion risks misting up the windows.

As soon as possible, place the con-trol in the outside air position.

6 - Demisting the rearscreen

With the engine running, pressingthe switch demists the rear screenand the mirrors.

It switches off automatically afterapproximately fifteen minutes.

Press again to resume demisting. It ispossible to stop the demisting opera-tion before it goes off automatically,by pressing the switch again.

Important precaution

Operate the air conditioning for 5 to10 minutes, once or twice a month,to keep it in good working order.

If the system does not produce coldair, do not use it and contact yourPEUGEOT dealer.

Note: The condensation created bythe air conditioning causes a normalflow of water under the vehicle whenstationary.

Automatic operation1 - Temperature adjustment

The value requested is displayed (from 15 to 30: comfortable tempera-ture = 22).

Press the up and down arrows to adjust.

2 - Automaticcomfortprogramme

Press the "AUTO" button. The sys-tem automatically adjusts the temper-ature to that selected, by starting theair conditioning if necessary.

It also manages the air flow andintake, to ensure sufficient air circu-lation inside the vehicle.

Adjustment of the air distributionmust be carried out manually whenyou require it.

3 - Automatic visibilityprogramme

In certain cases, the automaticcomfort programme can proveinadequate to de-ice or demist thewindows (humidity, many passen-gers, ice). In such cases, select theautomatic visibility programmeto rapidly clear the windows.

The system automatically managesthe air conditioning, the air flow andthe air intake, distributing the air tothe windscreen and side windows.

4 - Setting the airdistribution

Successive presses on thetop or bottom part of thisbutton allow the air to bedirected to:

– the windscreen (de-icing or demis-ting),

– the windscreen and footwells,– the central and side vents,– the central and side vents and

footwells,– the footwells.

Press the top or bottom part of thebutton to select the previous or nextsetting from the above list.

Manual operation

You may, if you wish, make a differentchoice from that offered by the sys-tem, by changing one of the settings.Press the "AUTO" button to return toautomatic operation.

5 - Air conditioning

Pressing this buttonstops the air condi-t i on ing . P ress ing

again returns the air conditioning toautomatic operation. The symbol"A/C" is displayed.

6 - Air flow

The air flow may beincreased or reducedby pressing the ''+''

or ''–'' button respectively.

7 - Air intake

This button is pressedfor recirculation of theinterior air. Recircula-

tion, shown on the display, preventsthe entry of unpleasant odours orfumes into the passenger compart-ment from outside.Avoid prolonged operation of therecirculation of interior air. A secondpress returns the system to automaticintake of air.Used in humid conditions, recircula-tion risks misting up the windows.

8 - Demisting therear screen

With the engine run-ning, pressing the

SIDE AIR BAGSSide air bags are incorporatedinto the backs of the front seats,on the door side.

They are triggered individually,on whichever side the collisionoccurs.

Operating check

This is by means of the warninglight on the instrument panel.

It comes on for 6 seconds whenthe ignition is switched on.

If the warning light:

– does not come on when theignition is switched on or,

– does not go out after six sec-onds,

Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Passenger air bag precautions

For a vehicle fitted with a dis-arming switch:

– disarm the airbag if youinstall a rear-facing childseat.

– arm the airbag for anadult passen-ger.

For a vehicle not fitted with a dis-arming switch:

– do not install rear-facing child seatson the front pas-senger seat.

Never place your feet or anyobject on the fascia.

FRONT AIR BAGS

Disarming the passenger air bag

☞ Insert the ignition key in switch1 and turn it:

– to the "ON" position, thepassenger air bag is armed,

– to the "OFF" position, the pas-senger air bag is disarmed.

Operating check

This symbol lights for approximatelysix seconds when the ignition isswitched on.

With the ignition on (2nd notch), illumina-tion of this warning light accompanied byan audible signal and the message"Passenger air bag deactivated" onthe multifunction display indicates thatthe passenger air bag is disarmed(switch in the "OFF" position).

The warning light remains onthroughout the disarming process. 138

This is located inside the boot on the left hand side. It holds up to 6 discs.

To insert a disc into the changer:– open sliding panel A,– press button B to eject the cartridge C,– open one of the six compartments of the cartridge by pulling tab D,– insert the disc with the printed face upwards and close the compartment,– insert the cartridge into the changer,– close the sliding panel A.

THE KEYS

The keys allow you to switch on theignition and to independently operatethe locks on the front door, the glovebox and the passenger air bag dis-arming switch.

Central locking

From the driver's door, the keysallow you to lock, deadlock andunlock the doors and boot/tailgate.

If one of the front or rear doors isopen, the central locking does notwork.

The remote control performs thesame functions at a distance.

Press button A to lock the vehicle.


This is confirmed by fixed lighting ofthe direction indicators for approxi-mately two seconds.

Unlocking

Press button B to unlock the vehicle.This is confirmed by rapid flashing ofthe direction indicators.

Note: do not repeatedly press thebutton of your remote control out ofrange of your vehicle. You risk caus-ing it not to work and the remote con-trol would have to be reprogrammed. ELECTRONIC ENGINE

IMMOBILISER

This locks the engine managementsystem as soon as the ignition hasbeen switched off and therefore pre-vents starting of the vehicle by any-one who does not have the key.

The ignition key has an electronicchip which has a special code. Whenthe ignition is switched on, the code isrecognised and starting is possible.

If the system does not functioncorrectly, contact a PEUGEOT deal-er as soon as possible.

Locating your vehicle

To locate your vehicle, if you havelocked it, in a car park:☞ press button A. The courtesy

lights come on and the directionindicators flash for a few seconds.

Key in ignition

A buzzer sounds on opening the dri-ver's door, if the key has been left inthe ignition.

Confidential card

The confidential card contains theidentification code necessary for anywork carried out by a PEUGEOTdealer on the system. This code ishidden by a film, which should beremoved only if necessary.

Keep your card in a safe place,never inside the vehicle.


Changing the battery of the remote control

The information ''battery flat'' is givenby an audible signal accompanied by amessage on the multifunction display.

To replace the battery, unclip thecasing using a coin at the ring (CR 2016/3 volt battery).

If the remote control does not workafter the battery has been changed,reprogramme the remote control.

Programming the remote control

☞ Switch off the ignition.

☞ Switch the ignition on again.

☞ Press button A immediately.

☞ Switch off the ignition andremove the remote control keyfrom the ignition lock. The remotecontrol is now working again.

DEADLOCKINGDeadlocking the doors is an addtionalsafety device.Warning: The internal and externaldoor controls cannot operate when thevehicle is deadlocked.

There are two methods of operation:With the remote controlTo deadlock: press button A.This is indicated by permanent lightingof the direction indicators for approxi-mately two seconds.

Press button A within five secondsof deadlocking to change this to lock-ing only.This is indicated by permanent lightingof the direction indicators for approxi-mately two seconds.

With the ignition key from the driver'sdoor

To deadlock: turn the key towards therear of the vehicle.To lock: within five seconds of deadlock-ing, again turn the key towards the rearof the vehicle. To unlock: turn the keytowards the front of the vehicle.

Do not operate the deadlock-ing if there is someone insidethe vehicle.

Do not operate the buttons ofyour remote control while it is in yourpocket, as there is a possibility that itmay unlock your vehicle.

Make a careful note of the number on each key. The key number is coded on the label attached to the key.

If the keys are lost, your PEUGEOT dealer can rapidly supply you with new keys.

The high frequency remote control is a sensitive system; do not operate it while it is in your pocket as there is a possi-bility that it may unlock your vehicle, without you being aware of it.

The remote control does not operate when the key is in the ignition, even when the ignition is switched off, except for repro-gramming.

However, do not operate the deadlocking function if there is anyone inside the vehicle.

Driving with the doors locked may make access to the passenger compartment by the emergency services more diffi-cult in an emergency.

As a safety precaution (with children on board), remove the ignition key when you leave the vehicle, even for a shorttime.

Do not repeatedly press the button of your remote control out of range of your vehicle.

You run the risk of stopping it from working and the remote control would have to be reprogrammed.

When purchasing a second-hand vehicle:

– ensure that you are given the confidential card;

– have the key codes memorised by a PEUGEOT dealer, to ensure that the keys in your possession are the only oneswhich can start the vehicle.

Do not make any modifications to the electronic engine immobiliser system.

THE ALARM SYSTEM*

This offers two types of protection:– external, it sounds if a door, the

bonnet or the boot is opened.– internal, it sounds if there is air

movement in the passengercompartment (a broken windowor movement inside the vehicle).

Note: it also has an anti-tamperfunction; if there is an attempt to tam-per with the wires to the siren, thecontrol unit or the battery, the sirensounds and the direction indicatorslight.

SettingSwitch the ignition off and get out ofthe vehicle.Set the alarm within five minutes fol-lowing your exit from the vehicle bylocking using the remote control (thered light on the switch, visible fromthe outside, flashes every secondand the direction indicators come onpermanently for two seconds).5 seconds later, internal protection isset.45 seconds later, external protectionis set. When the alarm is triggered, thesiren sounds for thirty seconds. After it has been triggered, the alarmis operational again.

Note: if you wish to lock your vehiclewithout setting the alarm, lock itusing the lock.

WarningWhen the alarm is triggered, if a door,the boot or the bonnet are not closedcorrectly, the siren sounds for amoment. Close the vehicle correctlyto set the alarm.

DisarmingUnlock the vehicle using the remotecontrol key (the direction indicatorsflash for two seconds and the redlight on the switch goes out).Note: if the red warning light flashes,it is a sign that the alarm has beentriggered during your absence.To stop it, switch on the ignition.Note: when the alarm is set, but theremote control no longer works:☞ unlock the doors using the key

and open the door; the alarm istriggered;

☞ switch the ignition on within tenseconds;

☞ press the internal protection but-ton 1 immediately. The alarm isdisarmed.

To set the alarm to external protection only.If you want to leave a windowpartially open, or a pet inside thevehicle, you need to select externalprotection only:• Switch off the ignition.• Within the next ten seconds, press

the internal protection button 1until the light comes on.

• Get out of the vehicle.• Press the locking button on the

remote control.• The doors lock.• The direction indicators light for

two seconds.• The red light on the switch flashes

once a second.

Note: if you wish to charge or replacethe battery:• Turn on the ignition.• You have 10 seconds after turning

on the ignition to press the internalprotection switch 1 and hold itdown for two seconds.

• The warning light flashes rapidlyfor three seconds.

• Disconnect the battery.• After reconnecting the battery,

lock, then unlock the vehicle usingthe remote control.

Do not make any modifi-cations to the alarm sys-tem, this could causefaults.
