Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner! I know there have been some late blasts of cold weather in some parts of the country, but we are well into spring for the most part. I saw a funny sign the other day and thought I would share it with you. (See photo to the right.) We will be doing more of this as the summer heats up!

It’s been a quick six months since I became president. A lot of great things are happening. We currently have over 830 members. We need to all reach out to others in the industry to let them know about PGMS and the benefits of being an active member.

The Georgia Branch is active again! I would like to thank Susanne Woodell, CGM, Brandon Haley, CGM and Anthony Williams, CGM for stepping up and leading the effort to get the Georgia Branch back in gear. We currently have eleven active branches and are always looking for new areas to start a branch. Branches provide a great avenue for networking on a local basis. PGMS was represented at the National Association of Landscape Professionals Student Career Day by Susanne, Horace Blue and Dallas Bretzman. I want to thank each of them for the time they put into this effort. The event was successful in collecting over 140 names of students to contact. We will be following up and contacting these students in the next few weeks and hopefully some will become student members of PGMS. I also want to thank David Davis, CGM for successfully implementing the clean up of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Winston-Salem, N.C. for the second year in a row! The Landscape Management and Operations Accreditations program is also making great progress. Joe Jackson, CGM has presented the program at several conferences as well. I was privileged to attend one of his presentations and I also was able to promote the program. We currently have five accredited campuses with the University of California Davis and Western Michigan University both receiving the highest accreditation of four stars.

Speaking of UC Davis, don’t delay in signing up for the PGMS School of Grounds Management Summer Conference “Water Conservation for Landscapes & Sports Fields” held Aug. 3-5 in Sacramento, Calif. There is a great line up of speakers and places to visit! It will be a great time of learning and networking with other green industry professionals. As I’m sure you have heard, California is in severe drought conditions and has been for several years. I am very familiar with the situation because we have been experiencing drought in Texas for several years. We will be hearing from several speakers who will be focusing on water conservation and sustainable practices. We should all be practicing sustainable water conservation and should be leaders in our industry and do the right thing!

California is a beautiful place to vacation. Why not bring the family and extend your time to include some vacation while on the West Coast? Register before it’s too late and I’ll see you in California in August!

Best Practices & Implementation Guidelines for Irrigation System Design, Installation & ManagementWater is an issue all grounds professionals must deal with no matter where in the country you are located. PGMS is working closely with the Irrigation Association (IA) to shed light on the water issues professionals in the green industry face. With that, PGMS wants to introduce you to Smart Irrigation Month! Taking place in July, Smart Irrigation Month is an Irrigation Association initiative to increase awareness of the value of water use… and grow demand for water-saving products, practices and services. Over the next couple of weeks, PGMS will be providing its members with materials to customize and use to promote Smart Irrigation and to educate yourself and others on this important topic. In the meantime, please see below an article focusing on best management practices that was printed last March.

In late March, the Irrigation Association and the American Society of Irrigation Consultants released a new version of their Landscape Irrigation Best Management Practices. The update reflects sound engineering practices, emerging technologies and recommended techniques for efficient water use.

The updated guidelines incorporate feedback from irrigation designers, consultants, contractors and water managers to ensure the BMPs remain relevant in today’s market. Highlights include:• Three BMPs for landscape irrigation:

-Design the irrigation system to efficiently use water resources. -Install the irrigation system to meet the design criteria. -Manage landscape water resources to maintain a healthy and functional landscape.

• Practice guidelines for effective implementation and adapting the BMPs to local conditions.

• Recommendations for evaluating potential irrigation water resources, including non-potable sources.

• Appendices with information on system inspection and commissioning, irrigation scheduling, and water budgeting.

“We’ve included more discussion about considering all potential water resources that could be used for irrigation as an alternative to using potable water sources,” said IA Industry Development Director Brent Mecham, CID, CLWM, CIC, CAIS. “We’ve also put greater emphasis on the important role water managers play in ensuring that systems are well maintained and that water resources are used efficiently.”

The guidelines are directed primarily toward system owners, irrigation consultants, irrigation designers, contractors, water managers and irrigation system maintenance personnel.

The revised BMPs also support IA’s strategic focus on legitimizing the irrigation industry with the public and policymakers through widespread application of best management practices, standards and codes. Since the Landscape Irrigation BMPs were first published in 2002, they have been adopted by many landscape organizations, government agencies and water purveyors.

The updated BMPs:• Allow irrigation professionals to adopt accepted practices to

minimize water use and waste in managed landscapes.• Serve as a credible resource for policy- and decision-makers

who are developing and implementing standards and codes related to landscape irrigation.

Member Profile: Bob Buckley By: John DoironJohn: What was your career before being involved with EarthPlanter? Bob: I actually come from corporate America. I was the Vice President of Marketing for Honeywell and Time Warner Cable. But more seriously I discovered EarthPlanter through a friend of mine, used them for a summer and the rest was history. I’m passionate about the product. We launched the line in late summer of 2012 with one model (the small rolled rim,) with hope and many prayers.

John: How long have you been a partner member of PGMS?Bob: EarthPlanter joined PGMS in late 2012. That was a big investment for us at the time, but it was a great decision and a turning point for the business. I have to give credit to my friend Dan Schied, CGM at the University of Rochester. I didn’t know Dan prior to this, but he took a chance on us. He was our first customer and he introduced me to PGMS. I am forever grateful.

John: What do you think of PGMS and its members?Bob: Where do I begin? PGMS is everything an organization should be - collaborative, inclusive, passionate with a focus on important short and long term challenges facing real people in real jobs. It’s the people that make all the difference - of course Dan, my friend Walt Bonvell, CGM who we are praying for every day, Ted Heywood, CGM, Rob Eichenauer, Hugh

Weldon, John Fik, Ed Harman, Jimmy Viars, CGM, John van Etten, CGM and you too John…just too many to mention! These were all people, who early on, supported us and it’s why we’re here today. The group also likes a good happy hour so that’s right up my alley!

John: What do you like to do in your personal life when you are not working?Bob: It may sound corny, but becoming a better person is always at the top of my list. The world is full of challenges and people that need help or simply encouraging words. I try to stay positive. I love to cook, listen to music (I’ve been known to break out into a Sinatra tune or two), golf (any excuse to be outside), family and friends are at the top of the list. I want to thank everyone at PGMS for their support. It’s been a great ride and we hope it will continue for many years to come!

What’s Growing On With...Cincinnati Branch?Walt Bonvell, CGM was given the Outstanding Service Award for supporting the interns at Project SEARCH Xavier University. Project SEARCH is a transition program for students to go from high school to a competitive job.

The program was developed in collaboration with Great Oaks Institute of Technology, Xavier University, and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities Agency. These three organizations together focus on education and employment for people with mild disabilities. Within Project SEARCH, students are at worksites for one school year and work as interns, without pay. These “interns” range from 18 to 21 years old.

Project SEARCH Xavier University celebrated its 10th anniversary on April 14, 2015. Xavier University was the first University to host the Project SEARCH program which started in the fall of 2005. Project SEARCH has now been replicated in close to 340 sites in 46 states and four countries, including 30 sites in the United Kingdom and one in Ireland, Canada and Australia.

The program was modeled after the first Project SEARCH program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. While at Xavier, the interns rotate through three work site internships which allow them to build technical skills and focus on communication and problem solving. The goal is for the interns to learn these job duties based on their individual abilities so they can become independent in a competitive work environment. Throughout the interns’ rotations, they receive on-the-job coaching if necessary, support with accommodations and interaction with various employees and students at Xavier University. It is a win-win situation for everyone. The goal is competitive employment and can occur anytime throughout the school year, either on campus or back in their home community.

Since 2005, 94 interns have participated in the program at Xavier University. Each May, the interns have a recognition program at the Cintas Center to celebrate the completion of the program. All who complete the program work

with their Transition Counselor to find employment in their local neighborhoods. Project SEARCH awarded the Xavier University program an Employment Outcome Award for 90-99% placement for 2013.

Trisha Heim, the first coordinator of the program, recognized Walt Bonvell, CGM, senior lead groundskeeper. Heim said, “At Xavier, one employee that has been our rock from the very beginning is Walt Bonvell, CGM. Walt presented at the Professional Grounds Management Society how the university benefited from Project SEARCH. He served on the Business and Industry Advisory Council, was the main speaker of the 2013 Project SEARCH Recognition program and spent many days eating lunch with the interns and giving them advice.”

Congratulations to Walt on this amazing accomplishment!

Time to Take a (Tree) WalkBy: Beau Mastrine, CGM

Now that spring has finally arrived, why not consider a pleasant walk around The College of Wooster’s campus to experience what horticulturist Mark Niemczyk calls “the urban forest.” More than 3,000 trees — all with GPS coordinates — are spread across Wooster’s rolling landscape.

As you traverse the campus, you will encounter Sycamores, Magnolias, Scotch Elms, Paperbark Maples, and Japanese Umbrella Pines, as well as Red, White, Black, and Willow Oaks, among scores of others.

One of the best ways to prepare for this jaunt is to pick up a copy of the new Tree Walk booklet, which highlights twelve campus trees of special interest, based on age, rarity, or history. Each tree also has a white sign next to it, indicating both the scientific and common name and a QR code that will take your smart phone to a web page that provides more information about that tree.

The booklet is available in Lowry Center at the post office and bookstore, as well as Andrews Library, Gault Alumni Center, Gault Admissions Center, and The Wooster Inn.
