Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2012 RPC M&OB scrutiny Anna Colaleo (INFN-Bari) RM Pierluigi Paolucci (INFN-NA) PM 1 RPC detector and operation 2 Very low, stable dark current and noise rate: no detector performance deterioration Key of success: clear procedures for prompt intervention during all beam-off access time Double gap RPC chambers = 912 Barrel 480: 4 stations, 5 wheels, 12 sectors End-cap 432: 2 x 3 stations, 2 rings, 36 sectors) - RPC low eta upgrade in : 144 chambers 18 institutions in 2012 (97 RPC authors), 2 new institutions in 2013 Operating channel: about 98.2%, downtime was only 1.08% (stably in the years) More than 98% of the chambers with average efficiency > 95% and cluster size ~ 1.8. The RPC system was able to cope with the increased luminosity: average rate ~ 3-6 Hz/cm2 (barrel- endcap), the maximum rate reached in the end-cap was 35 Hz/cm2 RPC strips = HV LV channels During 2012 RPC system has been operating very smoothly with high performance 2 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project Pigi Paolu cci & Anna Colal eo - RPC proje ct 3 Dott. A new generation of detector, electronic and software experts, was needed since the 2011 to run our system ( ), to upgrade it ( ) and restart it (2015) For this we planned to place side by side (at CERN) experts and newcomers in order to pass the baton to the future group of experts. During 2012 RRB SG meeting (see also RRB ) we presented the needs to increase the budget allocation for manpower (with a corresponding decreasing in material), required for continuous support during operation and as a trainer for new people. Since middle of 2011 decide to open a project associate contract for a detector expert. At same time we used subsistence to have post-doc at CERN with experts was very important to fine-tuning the RPC operations (stabilize the endcap detector and trigger) and study in real-time the performance of the system. Manpower was needed to upgrade all the online and offline tools (WBM, DCS, Background tool) and the offline analysis. M&OB were used for short periods (3-4 months) to give to them the opportunity to stay at CERN and analyze the data in real time. It was a success 4 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project Hired manpower: Taking into account the experience and the manpower needed during LS1 we confirm an higher allocation of hired manpower in future years. We also realized that most of the components replacements foreseen can be avoided repairing them (more technicians and experts and less material). Many students coming from small Institutions have been supported for short period. This was very useful in order to let new people joining the project and give a chance to everybody. We are planning to continue on this way and keep part of the manpower budget for that in the next years. 5 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2012 Budget status Carry over 2011 was due to the save money in 2010 and 2011 We decided in 2011 (presented at 2012 RRB SG): - to delay to 2012 the purchase of material (about 175 kCHF) which would required access to the cavern, in order to install it in keep about 40 kCHF as a contingency for In 2012 all contributions arrived on time. In order to help the small groups we allow them to paid a small part in kind 6 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2012 budget/expenditure The expenditure for manpower was kCHF about 33% more than requested. The expenditure for material was 60.7 kCHF about 73% of the 2012 budget request for material. 7 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project carry over was partially used for material. About 175 kCHF of material was foreseen in 2012 (using the saved " " budget). Not all material was purchased and the real cost in some cases did not correspond to the initial request. Carry over of 81 kCHF for the 2013 Equipment purchase: budget The expenditure foreseen in 2013 for the remaining items is 75 kCHF carry over in Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2012 hired manpower: in-kind, contract and subsistence In-kind contribution in manpower: some countries provide manpower on specific items as requested by the RPC IB. Subsistance for technicians, engineers or physicists/students with technical skill, to cover extra cost of staying in the Geneva area (not same for all people). Project associate for people with experience in commissioning and operation (detector expert on call) and trainer for new people. In-kind contribution CHF Project associate (2 persons) CHF Subsistence CHF Total manpower expenditure = CHF Total manpower allocation= CHF In 2012 the expenditure was higher than expected due to extra needs. 9 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2012 hired manpower expenditures Two not foreseen positions for post-doc were needed in the 2012 for a total of 83 kCHF on hired manpower: Project associate for Trigger system expert on call, RPC trigger expert. Activity shared with the trigger project. Subsistence for 4 month for the DPG coordinator. 10 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2014 M&O-B requests For 2014 the budget request is same as for (as for 2013) will be shutdown period : the needs in term of manpower and material are due to detector/electronics reparation and recommissioning. kCHF 11 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project Budget projection until 2017 Back to running operation from 2015 with less requests ( 30% less with respect to and 10% less with respect to 2012), due to long shutdown just finished. In next years we confirm an higher allocation for hired manpower with the reduction on budget for material. Hardware reparation and not its replacement. We want to keep the ability to renew our experts and have phd and post-doc at CERN Evolution of % of manpower allocation in the years. % in running period aroun 70% 12 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project Conclusions RPC project was formally built in the 2010 (barrel and endcap unification) and after 2 years we now know very well how to define our budget and use it to run our system during data taking and shut-down. Peculiarity to have 3 main contributors and many small institutions. We keep increasing the number of institutions participating to the RPC project. Two new institution in 2013 (total 20). This allows us to keep a low cost/authors. The financial support in 2012 allowed RPC system to operate efficiently during the data taking and study in details the detector and trigger performances. In 2012 the large carry-over from 2011 was re-allocated mostly for the material and a small part left as contingency. We accomplished about 50% of the foreseen material replenishment, which will be completed in The 2012 expenses were 15% higher with respect to expectation, due to extra needs on manpower. To cover that we use contingency from 2011 carry over. After the LS1 shutdown we will have 3 years of data taking and for this reason the estimated budget for the M&OB will be reduced of about 30%, with more request on manpower and less on material. 13 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project BACKUP SLIDES 14 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2012 budget: original request The budget allocation for 2012 was presented to SG referee in During last RRB meeting with referees in 2012 it was already approved an increase of budget for manpower and a corresponding decrease of budget for material. 15 Pigi Paolucci & Anna Colaleo RPC project 2014 M&O-B details kCHF 16
