Pinto Horse

The dropping temperatures herald wonderful things to come — cozy sweaters and brisk breezes, football games, steaming cups of apple cider, gorgeous amber-colored leaves crowning the trees on your evening trail ride. The arrival of fall means one thing in particular for the Pinto Horse Association: It’s almost time for the Color Breed Congress!

This year, the staff is excited to take on new events and see new and old faces, alike. The Western Dressage World Show and the Ranch Horse Sorting National Championship are sure to be a hit, as is the Congress, itself. As you begin your packing list and put the finish-ing touches on your horse’s braids, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are happy to help with any last minute questions.

See ya’ll in Tulsa!

The change in seasons brings a change in the atmosphere at the Pinto Horse Association Office as the staff and I make plans to head to Tulsa and present another successful horse show. The Color Breed Congress is almost here; are you ready? This year, the $4,000 worth of scholarship money is back - $1,000 to the top overall youth in each breed division. The show will take place November 5-10, 2013. We are excited to welcome the Western Dressage Association of America’s World Show and the Ranch Horse Sorting National Championship to the line up, as well. These events will occur just before the CBC, Nov. 2-3. Once again, the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex in Tulsa, Okla. will play host for all.

I am looking forward to seeing the Pinto Family yet again, as well as the other breed associations and disciplines that will be in attendance. I know the show will be packed with excellent exhibitors, friendly faces and top-notch competition. As always, the experience will be one of a kind. I encourage all members to join us in Tulsa for another outstanding event presented by the Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. See you there!

Happy Trails!

gathered for daily activities at “Jessica’s Camp,” a scholarship

based camp at King’s Bridge Farm in Newton, Conn. The program provides riding lessons and equine activities for children whose families cannot afford it and is a branch of the Jessica Rekos Memorial Fund.

Jessica Rekos was one of the 26 victims of the tragedy that overtook Sandy Hook Elementary School in De-cember of 2012. She was an avid rider at King’s Bridge Farm, and had asked Santa for a new pair of boots and a hat for Christmas

A f t e r hearing about

Jessica’s Christmas wish on the radio, Pinto

Horse Association of Amer-ica members Mindy Chernoff of

Newtown Square, Pa., and Stephanie Heim of Woodbury, N.J., started a do-nation drive entitled, “Jessica’s Boots,” in honor of Jessica and her love for horses.

The pair represented the New Jer-sey Pinto Horse Club, of which Cher-noff is Vice President. Wanting to do something for the suffering and sad-ness they felt, the team started collect-ing items for the donation drive.

“It was so fresh and raw in our minds and hearts, as well as with the rest of the country,” Chernoff said. “When Steph and I heard that [Jes-sica Rekos loved all things horsey and wanted boots for Christmas], it was as if a light was lit underneath us, almost a holy fire.”

Over a seven-month period, they gathered donations of every kind. The team got the word out via phone calls, emails, radio shout outs, flyers and by word of mouth through personal con-

tacts. L o c a l

tack stores, other stables, fam-

ilies whose children had outgrown their show

clothes, and even boot repair shops donated all kinds of “horsey”

items to the cause. “I was so grateful for the dona-

tions,” Chernoff said. “I got boxes and boxes and bags of items: halters, bridles, saddle pads, blankets, even a saddle!”

Although the donations poured in quickly, Chernoff and Heim faced struggles when it came to delivering the items.

“We were so excited about gath-ering these items to bring up north,” Chernoff said. “We wanted the parents to know, to get their blessing for the name ‘Jessica’s Boots,’ to encourage them. My intentions may have been good, but my timing was terrible and very insensitive. The pain and suffering they were experiencing there was way too raw for any outside interference.”

After weeks of anxiously wait-ing, Chernoff was able to get in touch with Annette Sullivan from Zoar Ridge Stables in Sandy Hook, Conn., who had once experienced a tragic loss herself.

“When, tragedy strikes,” Sullivan told Chernoff, “Family and friends come out of the woodwork to help you. You appreciate the help, but then you get overwhelmed. You wish it would be quiet. Eventually, they go away and it gets quiet. You appreciate the quiet. But then, it stays quiet. And you are sad and left with your loneli-

ed that was when they wanted to go to Sandy Hook,

so the families and friends knew they were not forgotten, that they are

remembered. Sullivan put Chernoff in touch

with Montana Calloway, Jessica’s rid-ing instructor, and on the sweltering hot day of July 19, Chernoff and Heim loaded up a 4-horse trailer with the donations and headed north to King’s Bridge Farm. They dis-tributed all the donated items to the stable and campers, in honor of Jes-sica.

“The whole experience was heart changing,” Heim said, “One little girl came up to me and gave me the biggest hug I have ever had from a child. I had to hold back my tears.”

Chernoff and Heim turned the do-nation into a learning experience for the campers by asking questions like, “When you lead a horse, what do you use to lead them?” Then, upon receiv-

ing the correct answer, they would hand out lead ropes.

“I was so thrilled by how well the kids responded,” said Chernoff. “They were having just as much fun as we were! That was a sweet moment.”

According the Chernoff, one of the best parts of the experience was the unknown of it all.

“Who were we, after all, to come on in with a huge vehicle and hand out items to total strangers?” She asked. “How would we be received? It was

frightening, as well as excit-ing. However, once we got there and be-gan handing out the items, it was amazing! To see the looks on the kid’s faces, to see the smiles

on the parent’s faces, there are simply no words for that kind of joy and gift-ing.”

After the campers left, Chernoff and Heim were able to sit down with Calloway and talk about Jessica.

“We spoke of a little girl who is with us no more, but loved Waffles the pony just as much as any of us love our mounts,” Chernoff said. “To

me, that was one of the most precious moments. Just trying to ease the pain and ache of a terrible loss.”

The strength of Calloway and the others at King’s Bridge Farm is some-thing to behold.

“We got to meet these incredibly strong women that deal with this trag-edy every day,” Heim said. “My heart goes out to them. All of the people we met welcomed us with open arms and smiles. That was all we needed.”

“They went through unspeakable tragedy,” Chernoff said, “Yet, there they were, laughing, smiling, loving the ponies at the stable and loving the entire event.”

By donating their time, handing out the donations and sharing their love to King’s Bridge Farm, Chernoff and Heim were able to keep Jessica’s spirit and memory alive and share her love of horses.

“We will never forget, you can count on that,” Heim said. “We have made new friends and put smiles on children’s faces - who could ask for more?”

“To see the looks on the kid’s faces, to see the smiles on the parent’s faces, there are simply no words for that kind of joy and gifting.” -Mindy Chernoff

exhibitors to showcase their breeds in front of the entire audience,” said Darrell Bilke, PtHA Exec. VP and COO. “What an amazing sight, seeing four breeds represented in the arena at the same time.”

With an award budget of well over $150,000, awards will be abundant during the show. They include: jackets from Tioga Territory for class champi-ons (with three or more entries), me-dallions for 1st-6th place in each class, Gist Silversmith custom belt buckles and Kensington Protective Products for high points. WDAA World Show partic-ipants will vie for a high point saddle, sponsored by Mike Corcoran Saddlery. Scholarships will also be given this year to the high point overall youth within each breed. A total of $4,000.00 will be evenly divided between the four breeds. The scholarships will be re-deemable upon enrollment in college.

Cash Challenge classes will return this year, with an estimated purse of nearly $10,000! In addition to the breeds at the show, horses registered in the following registries can partici-pate: APHA, APHA Solid Paint-Bred and POAC.

National Snaffle Bit Association dual approved classes are offered in

the Pinto, Palomino, Buckskin and Ap-paloosa breed shows, including solid classes. The NSBA classes provide an opportunity to gain points in both as-sociations and compete for more prize money.

Be sure and check out the CBC Market Place, held in conjunction with the show. Over 30 vendors from across the country will be open for business. This is a great opportunity to complete that Christmas shopping or pick up a forgotten hair net while still partaking in the horse show.

“The Color Breed Congress has something for everyone in the colored horse industry, we hope you are able to join us in Tulsa,” Bilke said.

For more information about the 2013 Color Breed Congress, WDAA World Show or ranch horse sorting please visit the website at www.color-breedcongress.com or contact the Pin-to International Headquarters at (405) 491-0111. See you there!

tThe Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. is proud to announce the largest combined color horse show in the world! The Built Ford Tough Live-stock Complex in Tulsa, Okla., will host the Color Breed Congress, November 2-10, 2013.

Exciting additions to the Color Breed Congress are happening in 2013. This year’s show will host the first-ever Western Dressage World Show and a ranch horse sorting, held in conjunc-tion with the Ranch Horse Sorting National Championships. The actual Color Breed Congress classes encom-pass four separate breed shows in one. Participating breeds include the Pinto Horse Association, Palomino Horse Breeders of America, Appaloosa Horse Club and American Buckskin Registry.

In addition to specific breed classes, exhibitors from each respec-tive breed can earn the opportunity to compete against each other in the Champion of Champion classes. This system is designed for winners from certain youth, amateur and open class-es to compete against one another to distinguish the true color champion in their respective category.

Represent your state at national PtHA functions! Be a Youth Director! As a Youth Director, you will be able to represent your state at national meetings in addition to informing the youth in your area of national activities. This is also the only way to be eligible to become an officer of PtHYA! To become a Youth Director, simply fill out the application found on www.pinto.org/youth and return it to the PtHA office. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified in January of acceptance. The number of Youth Directors allowed per state corresponds to the number allowed for PtHA Board of Directors. To see how many directors are allowed in your state, check the youth page of www.pinto.org. In the case where more members from the same state apply than are allowed, the director will be chosen on PtHA involvement and potential service.

Have you become a fan of the new Pinto Horse Youth Facebook page yet?

Search for Pinto Horse Youth Association and “like” it today! It was created by Pinto Youth, for Pinto Youth to help you stay up to date and in the know on all things PtHYA.

Don’t forget to renew your amateur card as well as your individual membership. Do this early to avoid the day-before-the-show rush. You can check the PtHA Rulebook if you need details on what qualifies as an amateur with the association. FACEBOOK FRIENDS
