COMPARING AND CONTRASTING MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS Place check marks in the appropriate column(s) to indicate whether the listed items apply to mitosis, meiosis or both.

Mitosis Meiosis

1. no recombination of homologs occurs

2. two cell divisions

3. produces four daughter cells

4. associated with asexual reproduction and growth

5. associated with sexual reproduction

PUNNETT SQUARE CALCULATIONS- CROSSES INVOLVING A SINGLE TRAIT Consider a species in which dark brown fur (D) is dominant relative to light brown fur (d). Using the Punnett square below, predict the frequencies of the genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring from dark brown parents two who are heterozygous (i.e., Dd genotypes).

Genotypes: % homozygous dark fur (DD) % heterozygous dark fur (Dd) % homozygous light fur (dd) Phenotypes: % dark fur % light fur

Perform the same calculation for a situation in which one parent is homozygous for the dark brown allele and the other is homozygous for the light brown allele.

Genotypes: % homozygous dark fur (DD) % heterozygous dark fur (Dd) % homozygous light fur (dd) Phenotypes: % dark fur % light fur

Perform the same calculation for a situation in which one parent is heterozygous for the two alleles and the other is homozygous for the light brown allele.

STRUCTURE OF DNA DNA molecules consist of a sequence of nucleotides, each of which consists of a phosphate, a deoxyribose sugar and a nitrogenous base. In the diagram, label these three nitrogenous bases are shown in the nucleotides at the right. On the blanks below, write the name of the nitrogenous base corresponding to the letter symbol.

DNA molecules have a double helix shape. Two strands of DNA twist around one another and are attached by hydrogen bonds between the matching bases on each chain. Adenine always pairs with thymine, and cytosine always pairs with guanine.

In the illustration at the left below, label a phosphate, a deoxyribose sugar, and a nitrogenous base.

The diagram at the right shows the replication of DNA. Label the original strand and the new strand.

Provide the missing terms in the blanks below.

The three-dimensional structure of DNA was determined by two scientists named _______________ and _______________. They determined that the DNA molecule was shaped like a _______________. During replication, _______________ identical strands of _______________ are produced. These strands contains sequences of ______________ and some of these code for proteins and are called ________________ .

ANATOMY OF A GLACIER Glaciers are large structures made of ice that gradually move down the sides of a mountain. As they do so, they carry tons of trapped rock and scrape and grind the mountain walls. The enormous and sustained force reshapes the mountain sides and slopes in its path and leaves behind deposits of rock carried from other areas. Provide the names of the features of a complete glacier using the terms in following table:

Cirque Drumlin Kettle lake

Crevasses Esker Terminal moraine

ANATOMY OF A RIVER SYSTEM Rivers typically begin as a melting glacier or a collection of small streams high up in a set of hills. As the river waters flow downhill they reshape the land by eroding features and transporting materials such as stones, sand, and clay. Eventually the river ends in a lake or the ocean. The term river system is used to describe the river itself and all the water that flows into it. Provide the names of the features of a complete river system using the terms in following table:

Alluvial fan Lake Rapids

Delta Meander Tributary

Glacier Oxbow lake Waterfall

LAYERS OF THE EARTH In addition to the water and land on the surface, the Earth has four layers from the outside to the inside. Use colored pencil or pen to color the four layers as well as the land and water on the surface on the diagram of the Earth below.

Use the colors as indicated in the table:

Blue: water Orange: mantle (3,200 km thick)

Brown: crust Red: Inner core (1,500 km thick)

Green: land Yellow: Outer core (2,000 km thick)
