UBC‘s “Totes of Hope” is an excel-lent opportunity for you to provide a Christmas meal for a family in need. This is also a great change for your children to be actively in-volved in a UBC ministry event that teaches an important lesson about the importance of being generous to others. Here it is, my favorite time of year. Fall. I love the brisk coolness in the air and the vivid colors of the leaves, falling from the trees. Each changing season reminds me once again of the awesome and mighty God we have the privilege of serving. The holiday season is quickly approaching and with that comes the hectic pace we each seem to find ourselves caught up in. This Thanksgiving, take time out of your hectic schedule and talk with your kids about all that God has blessed your family with. Then take time to truly thank Him. There isn’t enough room in this newsletter to list all I’m thankful for so I’ll just leave it at this; I feel truly blessed not just to have “my fam-

ily” but to have my church family too. I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve the Lord with this awesome staff, for my faithful vol-unteers that faithfully serve the best bunch of kids in the state of Kentucky, for the smiles, giggles and hugs of so many great kids that can bring you up on the lowest day, and mostly I’m thankful to have the opportunity to serve a risen Savior in such an awesome

church. Happy Fall! Happy Thanksgiving! Miss Pat

AWANA NEWS Let me start by saying “THANK YOU” for the outpouring of love you showed Tim & Cheryl Welcher during our Penny War. We raised $404.00 by the giving of your loose change and, of course, some paper money! What a blessing you are, not just to UBC but, to the Welcher’s as well. Thank you so very much. We have some exciting things coming up! Be sure to mark your calendars! November 6 – GAP Christmas Toy Night – Please bring NEW, UNWRAPPED toys to be taken with us to Eastern Kentucky for our Christmas Mission Trip! Each clubber will receive 100 points for bringing in a toy! November 20 – “Cards of Hope” Night – Clubbers and family members are encouraged to bring in a Christmas card, handmade or store bought, that will be placed in our holiday “Totes of Hope.” This effort is sponsored by our Outreach Team to provide needy families with a meal for the holidays. Totes will be available soon with a list of what to put in them if you would like to participate. November 27 – NO AWANA – “Happy Thanksgiving”

UBC CHRISTMAS POST OFFICE The UBC Christmas Post Office will be up and running beginning December 1st and will be open through December 22nd. This is a great way to pass along holiday greetings to your church family. Please remember when addressing your cards, if the receiver is not presently attending UBC, the cards will not be forwarded to them. This year, the post office will be run by the UBC children and parents. All proceeds will be put in the fund to assist those going to camp in 2014. The cost will be $.25 per card again th is year. Please place your card in the “TO BE SORTED” box and we’ll take care of the rest! * Parents, if your child will be going to camp, please see me to get on the rotation to help with the Post Office!!

PARENT’S NIGHT OUT Parents, need to do some Christmas shopping? Maybe you just need a date night. Well, drop your children off at UBC from 6 until 9:00pm on Friday, December 6th, and let our wonderful youth care for them while you spend some quality time together! What do you need to do to get in on this? Watch the bulletin board for the sign-up sheet so you can indicate what they would like to eat from the choices given. Then send them in their pajamas along with their sleeping bag and pillow for an evening of games and movies in the sanctuary! Next, either when you drop them off or when you pick them up, come with some money as a donation to the youth to help cover camp expenses! See how easy that is? Youth, you will need to see Allen to sign-up to help!!

Count your blessings, name them one by one...

"It's habits that can imprison you and it's habits that can free you. But when thanks to God be-

comes a habit - so joy in God becomes your life." Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts

In an attempt to be diligent about having devo-tional times with our four children at home, Jes-sica and I have found that the best time to do this is every night at the dinner table. We keep a de-votional right beside our kitchen table, and each night at dinner, after dishing out food and praying, we open it up. It has been amazing to see the way God has blessed this time as our kids naturally open up and discuss things over dinner. As their physical bodies are being nourished, their hungry souls are opening right up to think, dis-cuss, and meditate on God's word and how it applies to their young lives. We have been blessed with the most encouraging conversations at this time, sometimes extending long after the plates have been cleared of food.

For the month of October, we decided to incorporate the "Joy Dare" into this nightly routine. Taken from the website of Ann Voskamp, New York Times bestselling author of One Thousand Gifts, the "Joy Dare" stretches your mind as you seek to give

thanks. Much beyond the typical thankfulness for family, food, money and shelter, you are encour-aged to give thanks each day for gifts from God that might not make the usual list..."a gift re-deemed, a gift read, a gift begun, a gift on time, a gift hallowed," are some of the gifts you may be prompted to ponder.

Just through October, our family's list has stretched beyond one full sheet of paper. This has become a cherished time for us, and if we begin eating without bringing up the nightly prompt, one child or another will shout out, "Don't forget the thankfulness paper!" We plan to keep going.

During this month of Thanksgiving, I want to encourage you and your family to do the same. Whether you come up with your own list of ideas for giving thanks, or use someone else's prompts like we have done, you are certain to be blessed as you reflect on the good that God has brought into your life. But make it a habit, this daily ritual of giving thanks for your many blessings. (To access the "Joy Dare" that we use, visit www.aholyexperience.com and click on “Joy Dare”.)

See You Sunday,

Pastor Kevin

Stewardship Report:

Weekly Giving & Expenses

As of 10/25/2013 YTD Average Weekly Giving $ 13,792 ($ 11,082 Gen. Ofgs) YTD Average Weekly Expenses 12,703 *Additional $101,711 paid out of Weekly Surplus/(Deficit) $ 1,089 general fund toward mortgage principle

The strongest churches have those members who, let’s face it, who do much of their service “behind the scenes.” Whether needed to teach a class, or run up to church when the fire alarm goes off, they are willing to jump right in. Both Bill and Rhonda Sturdivant are those kind of people. For most of the 13 years that they have been mem-bers of UBC, they have worked tirelessly to do the Lord’s work. Bill has been a trustee much of the time, and has been known to be at church all hours of the day and night making sure that our building and grounds are in working order. He has also used many of his skills to help plan and implement our Appalachian mission trips. There is nothing more precious than watching Bill, as he trains and passes along his knowledge to those that we are ministering to on those trips. Quite a few men/women have learned some carpentry, maintenance and other life skills under his watch. He might even be caught helping out in the kitchen during VBS! Rhonda has faithfully served with our youth over the years, and in many capacities. She has chaperoned youth events and trips, worked in Awana and VBS, taught middle school Sunday School, and has even gone on one mission trip herself. As a middle school teacher, she has a great deal of expertise with young people, and we benefit greatly from her willingness to share it. Bill and Rhonda have a lovely family. Scott and his wife Cait are living in Lexington currently. Bradley is in Walton, and Rachel is all the way down in Atlanta, Georgia. Bill and Rhonda are sure to be “burning up the road” as they travel south to visit their kids. Although Bill is busy with his job at Pactiv Corporation, he finds time to golf whenever possible. Rhonda likes to read and spend as much time as possible with her children. The next time you see Bill or Rhonda, please take a moment to thank them for all they do. They’re the best.

The Christmas season is approaching fast and with it comes the Harvest of Hope giving tree. Be on the lookout later in Novem-ber for our tree with tags for needy kids in Boone County. We haven't received our list of kids yet from NKY Community Action, but we'll keep you posted as to what Sunday you can look for the tree. We know how you all enjoy sharing the love of our savior by making a child's Christmas wish come true. Thanks in advance for your generous hearts for the kids.

Operation Christmas Child

Making the stuffing for Thanksgiving dinner helps re-store my heart to gratefulness. First I cut bread into cubes to dry out. Has it really been a year since I thanked God for the simple things of life? Dear God, thank you for my daily bread. Next I boil giblets for the tasty broth. When did I last express thanks for my body — even the oft-forgotten parts? Thank you, God, for cre-ating and sustaining me.

Then I dice onions and celery, add-ing them to the mixture. That re-minds me to thank God for abun-dant harvests. Finally I measure raisins, nuts, sage and salt into the stuffing, as scents fill the air. Lord, help me not grow weary of the interesting “spices” that fill my life.

As the stuffing goes into the oven, warm air wafting into the kitchen, I remember to thank God for providing my home. Here relatives and friends gather, often an odd combination. Yet when we bow our heads in thankfulness, we’re an unbeatable mix.

—MaryAnn Sundby

It’s time to head for the mountains and receive the biggest blessing of the holiday season! Our annual GAP Christmas trip is scheduled for December 15th—19th. Information sheets will be available from Miss Pat with a breakdown of what we will be doing each day. Monday is the day we will need the most help. That is the day the children shop for their parents. Tuesday and Thursday we will work the Distribution Center. Wednesday is Toy Store day! Days will fill quickly so don’t wait to get your name on the list! If you aren’t able to join us on the trip, you can still be part of the trip by join-ing us in prayer. We are already praying for the people we will come in contact with, for the chil-dren we will have the opportunity to work with, that we will have good weather to allow us to do all that God has for us to accomplish, and most importantly, that hearts will be changed. Please see Miss Pat for details.

GAP Christmas Toy Drive

Our toy drive will run November 3 through November 17th. You will have an opportunity to present your gift in either morning service on the 17th or bring it in early and drop it in the barrel. Please remember we are asking for new, unwrapped toys. The greatest need again this year seems to be for the teens, both boys and girls. As for the “Parent Shop”, we are focusing on gifts for MOM this year., but will gladly accept gifts for Dad as well. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

God of all nations, you are our Strength and Shield. We give you thanks today for the devotion and courage of all those who have offered military service for this country … We ask today that you would lift up by your Spirit those who are now at war; encourage and heal those in hospitals or mending their wounds at home; guard those in any need or trouble; hold safely in your hands all military families and bring the returning troops to joyful reunion and tranquil life at home. Give to us, your people, grateful hearts and a united will to honor these men and women and hold them always in our love and our prayers until your world is per-fected in peace and all wars cease. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
