PROFILESteve Hall Development Consultants (Pty) Ltd. is a consultancy practice of Architects, Project Managers and Environ-mentalists founded in 2014 and based in Mbabane, Swaziland. Formed by Steve Hall, who has thirty-five years of work experience in Swaziland and who was previously a director of Hall/Stacey Architects, and of Building Design Group, this practice draws on his substantial experience providing services for private, corporate and governmental clients. His knowledge of Swaziland’s construction industry ensures valuable insight into the smooth running and realistic scheduling of projects.

Our highly qualified staff have a long history of proven expertise in generating excellent and sustainable design, dealing with new builds, refurbishments or regeneration projects, and have an outstanding reputation for quality service delivery.

We pride ourselves on providing imaginative solutions to challenging briefs, and on our professionalism in deliver-ing projects of all sizes and degrees of complexity on time and to budget.

We have an excelllent network of consultants and support service providers should an area of expertise outside of our scope be required by our clients.

OrganisationSteve Hall Development Consultants operates from offices in Mbabane.

Our practice has the expertise, experience and resources to deliver a wide range of projects across many sectors. We are renowned for being responsive to clients’ demands, and perform well on fast track programmes and limited budgets without compromising quality. The company’s approach is pragmatic, challenging, innovative and profes-sional, placing us at the forefront of the architectural and project management disciplines in Swaziland. Our reputa-tion within the construction industry is well respected on all fronts, from clients through to contractors, specialists and co-consultants. What we bring to our projects is a process – a way of working that is equally applicable to all projects regardless of their diversity in scope, scale and budget. Each project is approached with the same challenging mind, the same careful, consistent methodology and a thorough attention to detail.

For a commission, the Managing Director is directly responsible to the client at all times, supported by a project team selected for it’s appropriate skills and expertise. The Managing Director and Associates act as the key client contacts and will be actively involved in the project from initial design concepts through to completion.

The company is 100% Swazi owned, with Steve Hall, and Londziwe Simelane as directors. We are also registered with Construction Industry Council for all our disciplines.

PeopleOur work is primarily people centric. The built environment is for people, used by people, experienced by people. The design and construction process is people driven; ideas, concepts, knowledge and their respective application are people generated. We enjoy teamwork and appreciate the wealth and breadth of expertise that different people can bring to a project. Creating buildings can, and should be, exhilarating – for all involved.

Our company operates as a team; led by Steve Hall, assisted by Alone Tembe, Diane Webb, Saneliso Ncube, Mbali Mabuza, and Londziwe Simelane. Collectively we offer an efficient, balanced and visionary team which can address and answer our clients needs and priorities. SHDC also uniquely provides in-house Clerk of Works services through Arthur Hlatshwayo in order to maintain extended monitoring during the construction phase of our projects. All of the above are supported by our Office Manager, Melissa Vilane.

Systems:We run networked workstations for design, technical and administrative documentation.

Workstations run Archicad Version 19 on which staff produce general architectural documentation. Other software used includes Adobe Photoshop, Indesign, Microsoft Word, Excel, Atlantis and Project.

Drawings are printed in colour or black and white using large format printers. Document copying is by high speed Canon laser copier.

E-mail is an integral part of the company communications system for both text and drawing transfer. A company FTP site facilitates the transfer of large drawing and document files.

Education and Training:All staff are encouraged to develop their professional and technical skills through both in-house and formal training.

Financial assistance is provided where necessary.

Staff routinely attend Archicad Training Sessions as well as ad-hoc technical presentations.

We support internship programmes for students requiring in-service experience in their educational courses.

Local Support:We actively support local Swazi companies, consultants, service providers and manufacturers at every level of our work process.

SustainabilitySteve Hall Development Consultants aims to be a leader in the field of sustainable design with a holistic approach to low carbon, environmentally conscious, energy efficient buildings. Steve Hall and his associates in the practice strive to pioneer ecological issues in architecture and are consistently at the forefront of current thinking in this regard.

A number of recently completed projects include innovative passive and active buildings using solar energy, passive controls, “green” roofs and recycled materials such as Imfihlo Lodge in the Mbuluzi Game Reserve.

Project Management; Steve Hall has considerable experience of large scale project management and has been responsible for the follow-ing recent projects in Swaziland:

Matsapha Cash Centre for the Central Bank of Swaziland; project management of construction consultants, specialist fire, security and processing consultants and subcontractors, architectural design and contract administration, furni-ture procurement, including full client liaison and representation.

NERCHA Head Offices, Mbabane; project management, architectural design and contract administration services.

Ezulwini Village (Royal Villas); project management, architectural design and construction of twenty VIP houses in a period of eleven months, co-ordination of seven consultants, five primary procurement contracts, twelve subcon-tracts of specialists, procurement agents and two client bodies.

Nkhotfotjeni Building; Dzeliwe Street, Mbabane: project management, architectural design and construction of of-fice building for Tibiyo Taka Ngwane, including project co-ordination and design services for tenant requirements and facilities.

Environmental ServicesSHDC provides comprehensive environmental management services that comply with the Swaziland Environmental Management Act, 2002 and relevant legislative requirements. We aim to provide sustainable environmental solutions throughout the life of the project. Our services include: Environmental Auditing, Environmental Impact Assessments, Public Participation, Comprehensive Mitigation Plans and Compliance Monitoring, Visual Impact Assessments.
