GOLDFISHINSPIRING FROM NATURE

Many people like to keep goldfish because of their beautiful tails and the special characteristics on their heads. Also, their elegant swimming posture can relax people’s mind.

This design is inspired by the fins and tails as well as scales of goldfish. Moreover, inspiration for landscape is got from the swimming posture of goldfish.

The site is located at Wan Chai. It has a small size and is surrounded by three streets.

Building form is inspired by the fins and tails of goldfish. We can obviously see the fin rays, which support the fins and tails of goldfish. The movements of fins and tails of goldfish is affected by the water waves.

Scales of goldfish reflect light which produce a shiny effect when they swim as the scales move and reflect light in different angles.

To create a landscape that can be viewed by the surrounding buildings and to provide a relax feeling for people viewing from the top, a simulation of swimming goldfish can be adopted.

The major material used is stainless mirrored steel.

The material is used strategically with the shapes and angles to reflect light. There is continually changing as every movement is caught on the mirrored steel. This provide a new visions for people in this old district. In addition, this design can be an intermediate between the environment and the people indoor and outdoor.

Considering the vehicular force and pedestrian force, this design is a screen to separate the road and the open spaces for people. The screens like blinds. The reflective materials of stainless mirrored steel can turn the surrounding buildings, traffic, people and environment into flickers of images, like a kaleidoscope. Visitors can participate in the design as the surfaces change continuously according to surrounding movements and time.

This design allows people to experience the old district, Wan Chai, in a new angle. Also, it can be an intermediate between people and the environments as images of the environment reflect in different directions.

In Hong Kong, fast pace is the lifestyle of everyone. This kind of lifestyle not only appears on the speed of walking but also eating and learning. We can experience this lifestyle everywhere in Hong Kong, even in a discrete and homey area like Happy valley.

To slow down the pace of people, slow living is promoted in this shopping mall. A fundamental concern in slow living is time. At its heart, slow living is a conscious attempt to change the current temporal order to one which offers more time, time to attend to everyday life. The pace of the visitors is slowed down by giving surprise in turns of views and leading the visitors to appreciate nature and lives.

SLOW LIVINGSHOPPING MALL

Visitors will go from a small space to a larger space. This contrast allows visitors to experience a space to be larger than its original size. The small spaces attract people to go further and the most attractive point is put at the end of the journey. Long straight one direction routes are avoided. In addition, continous in and out spaces are formed.

Design intention:

One of the intentions of this shopping mall is to express leisure in Traditional Chinese Garden, so some strategies in creating a Traditional Chinese Garden are adopted. When people have that kind of leisure, they will experience slow living simultaneously.

Split levels are used to create routes with up and down patterns. Pocket space for planting and resting is provided on each level. To create surprise when going from one point to another, plants become the medium to attract visitors’ curiosity as they block some views on the fore. On the other hand, visitors view the plants in different directions and angles can get different kinds of surprise.

Tumbled glass is used for the floor. It’s 100% recycled and it’s colorful, nearly any design incorporating glass is stunning. The most important thing is it won’t cut. Some glass feature is used like glass chair and lamp.

Wood paving is used this zone. In the middle of this zone is a tree surrounded by a wood bench which people can sit on the bench.

Only this zone has water feature. The flow of water can motivate people to go to the rock zone. The skygarden on 16/F can also see the water feature which motivate people to go down to the skygarden on 15/F.

As the light is not enough for growing plants in this zone, so I use a rock garden for this zone.Comparing with the water zone, rock zone is quiet so it need the motivation from the water. This zone is inspired from Japaneserock garden.
