EXCELLENCE INNOVATION SUCCESS COMMUNITY POTTSVILLEBEACH PUBLIC SCHOOL Wednesday 31 July 2019 Term 3 Week 2 PRINCIPAL NEWS Dear Parents and Carers Congratulations on an outstanding first week. As you can imagine the first few weeks this Term is about resettling in after the holidays, getting organised, learning new routines, meeting up with friends and diving into learning at our great school. We are opening up the communication with you and have recently updated the PBPS Parent Handbook, part of the reviewed Student Wellbeing guidelines including Term 3 organisation, Playground Expectations and classroom visuals that our school has adopted as part of making learning visible for your children. You will also have received important information about Council changes to the traffic circulation around the school as well as information about replacing damaged roofs. Please ensure you look closely at all of these documents. We are focusing on a student first approach by empowering our staff and learners with the right tools and support to engage with the very best teaching and learning strategies. With our focus on Visible Learning we need to ensure we are all on the same page and in part, review and collaboration are key. The focus of our reflection provides us the opportunity to look at our purpose, where we are at, where we are going and what next in the same context that we ask our learners. As part of this journey we will be looking at the big picture on how we are tracking in our School plan, Vision and Strategic directions. We will be inviting parents to engage with us in upcoming meetings - We would love to see you there. Thank you for your ongoing support - We are excited to be bringing together the very best of Pottsville Beach Public School for your children. Restorative Practices Pottsville Beach PS is committed to encouraging students to develop confidence in becoming resilient young people who care for each other. Through restorative practices we seek to enhance relationships among students and between students, teachers and parents, in order to nurture our sense of community. A positive school climate in which young people feel connected is the best environment for learning. A restorative approach: • Encourages students to appreciate the consequences of their actions on others; • Enables students to make amends where their actions have harmed others; • Requires students to be accountable for their actions; • Encourages respect for all concerned. How Parents Can Help • Listen to your child; • Remember there are two sides to every story; • Engage your child in problem solving using the restorative model; • Support your child by participating in the process if a situation arises; • Trust the school and the process; • Seek clarification from school staff if you have any concerns or questions; • Do not under any circumstance approach children. Restorative Practices - The Underlying Principles Restitution not Retribution Restorative practices is not a soft option. • Conflict causes harm that needs to be repaired; • People involved in conflict, wrong doing or misbehaviour need to be actively involved in the process of resolution; • Logical consequences and sanctions, including detentions, suspensions and staff disciplinary processes are still used; • Students learn social emotional skills they will use throughout their lives. The Restorative Questions All restorative practices draw from the following questions: When challenging behaviour: What happened? What were you thinking of at the time? What have you thought about since? Who has been affected? In what way have they been affected? What do you need to do to make things right? To help those affected: What did you think when you realised what had happened? What impact has this incident had on you and others? What has been the hardest thing for you? What do you think needs to happen to make things right? So far we have noticed that Aaron Blabey draws his characters with big eyes. His books don’t have bright colours in the illustrations which is different to lots of other picture book illustrators. (Maybe his favourite colours are yellow and brown.) He uses interesting adjectives like forlorn.
