First semester is nearly over so, I thought Id define a few terms weve been using at St. Margarets. First, Phonemic Awareness – The ability to manipulate the sounds that make up the spoken language. A good way to think of phonemic awareness is that you can do it with your eyes closed. You just need your ears. · It requires an awareness of the distinctive features of individual phonemes. · It requires an understanding that individual segments of sounds at the phonemic level can be combined to form words. · It requires an understanding that single-syllable words such as catcan be divided into beginning, middle, and ending sounds. · Phonemic Awareness is difficult because there are 26 letters (graphemes) in the English language but approximately 40 sounds (phonemes). Those 40 sounds are represented in 250 different spellings (e.g., /k/ as in c, k, ck, ch, que). · Phonemic awareness is a better predictor of future reading achievement than more global measures of general intelligence (IQ) or reading readiness (Adams, 1990; Blachman, 1989, 1991; Catts, 1992; Stanovich, 1986; Yopp, 1995). · Phonemic awareness skills include: Listening, Rhyming, Awareness of Syllables, Initial/Medial/Final Sounds, Phonemes, and Intro- ducing Letters and Spelling Second, Phonics - The understanding that there are relationships between letters and sound. This requires making a connection to the sound and symbol (phoneme and grapheme). The National Reading Panel found that phonics instruction should be: · Systematic and explicit · Taught in kindergarten · One component of a complete reading program · Focused on introducing the relationship of letters to speech sounds in a language · The National Reading Panel also determined that Phonics instruction is beneficial for all children · Knowing phonics helps children know how to spell and which letters to use · Teaching spelling helps students be automatic readers and spellers · The amount of phonics instruction may vary depending on student needs and abilities So, now you know all about reading instruction. Right! Our teachers have all been trained in the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education, Orton-Gillingham, method of teaching reading which includes phonemic awareness and phonics. They meet each week, at Teacher Co- llaboration,to discuss what has happened in the past week and to plan for the upcoming week. Teaching reading is much more difficult that it seems, but our teachers are doing an excellent job of teaching reading and preparing our students to be great readers, writers, and spellers in the future. Please remember the St. Margarets School Christmas Program on Thursday, December 19th at 7:00 PM at the CWC auditorium. As usual, Mrs. LeMasters has an excellent program lined up for you. We will also be drawing the winning tickets for the RTO, Point S tire and fuel raffle. A prayer for our families, friends, and neighbors. Father, I dedicate this new day to You; As I go about my work. I ask You to bless those with whom I come in contact. Lord, I pray for all men and women Who work to earn their living; Give them satisfaction in what they do. Spirit of God, comfort the unemployed and their families; They are your children and my brothers and sisters. I ask You to help them find work soon. Amen. Wyoming Catholic Ministries Foundation (WCMF) and your parish invite you to make a Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD) tax free out of your retirement account if you are over 70 ½ years of age and are required to take distributions. If you have not taken all your Required Minimum Distribution, you can make a direct contribution to a charity. By making a QCD, you will avoid paying income tax on the distribution and the 50% excise tax penalty from the IRS. But this must be done before December 31. If interested in making an end of the year contribution to WCMF or have any questions regarding WCMF, please contact Esther McGann at [email protected] or 307-745-7039. Until further notice, she is the contact person for WCMF.

Merry Christmas St. Margaret’s School

Each year at Christmas there are those who are hard to shop for

---they have it all. The St. Margaret’s School Commission

thought that maybe this year you could shop for St. Margaret’s

School because they don’t have it all! So instead of stressing

over what to get that special person, you could simply put some

dollar amount in an envelope for St. Margaret’s School. You

can also donate a memorial gift in honor of a loved one, or give

a family donation if you no longer buy presents for one anoth-

er. The money will be used for unexpected expenses at the

school. There are envelopes at each of the church entrances,

and the envelopes can be deposited in the marked boxes in the

church, or dropped off at the school or parish office. We will

end this little Christmas project December 22nd.

Your generosity and kindness are always appreciated, and

please know you are prayed for always. May God continue to

bless us and our wonderful school.

Family Movie Night!

Friday, December 27, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the down-stairs CCD Room at St. Margaret’s School.

We will be watching the 2013 British movie adaptation of The Christmas Candle, which is based on a novel by Max Lucado. It is rated PG, and is 1 hour and 40 minutes long. Take some time to slow down from the mad rush of the world and spend a little of it with your family and parish community. No homework involved! Feel free to bring any snacks or drinks to share if you would like. We will provide the popcorn! If you have any questions, please call or text Hannah at (307)840-0930

Next week will be the last Religious Education classes before Christmas break. We will have a party for the students during the regular class time. The penance service will be at 6:00 pm, we encourage all students to attend and the later classes to join us afterward.

We have some Children's Guide to the Mass booklets available at the doors of the Church for children to fol-low along during the Mass. The children are welcome to use them during masses, but please return them so they are available for our school masses. Thank you!

Rejoice in the Lord always; I say it again rejoice. Indeed the Lord is near! The Lord is always near to us, the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts. So we should rejoice always and on this Gaudete Sunday we should rejoice all the more. We hear of the imprisoned John the Baptist sending his disciples to inquire of Jesus if he is the one. Jesus tells them to go back and tell John what they have seen for themselves, and it is much to rejoice over. Many people say that John had become worried while in prison and was doubting if Jesus was the one. However I suspect that John knew that his disciples needed to stop following him and follow Jesus; he knew they needed to see for themselves the good works of Jesus. We could say, and I do, that he was inspired by God to send his disciples to Jesus. I think that we need to hear about it too. I believe that God in-spired Matthew to include this in his Gospel so that we would be reminded how important it is to follow Jesus, and to rejoice!
