Presents: “Giardini d'Italia, Bellissimo,” a Private
Travel Program exploring inspirational Italian
Gardens from Tuscany to the Lazio region with
Rome to finish!
8 Days / 7 Nights: October 4-11, 2020
2
Our inspiration for this travel program:
The Dooleys were great admirers of Italian gardens, art and architecture and the design of their
estate was heavily influenced by the Italian style of the 19th
century. In the early 1900s the Dooleys
sailed to Europe, beginning their
grand tour in the Lazio region,
Tuscany and Northern Italy, and
the influence of the gardens of
these regions is apparent in the
design of Maymont’s Italian
Garden.
With a host from Maymont, this
8-day handcrafted journey begins
in the stunningly beautiful
foothills of Tuscany and
explores some of the region’s
finest and most interesting
Italian gardens before taking us
through the hillside gardens of
Settignano into Rome and the heart of the scenic Lazio region. We’ll visit famed gardens such as
Villa Medici, Torrecchia Vecchia and Gardens of Ninfa, finishing with the cypress studded garden
slope of 16th
century Villa d’Este and UNESCO World Heritage site, Hadrian’s Villa. From
panoramic views of Rome from the tree-lined grounds of Villa Medici, to the soft landscape of the
Latina Plain where Gardens of Ninfa appear like a portal to a different world, this is truly a unique
study of fine Italian gardens exploring the very best of Tuscany, Rome and the heart of the former
Roman empire.
3
Day-By-Day Itinerary:
Day 1 – Sunday, October 4: Benvenuti! Upon arrival at Rome International Airport we will be
met by our ground representative who will assist us with our luggage and lead us to our luxury
coach for the 3-hr drive to our accommodations in the heart of Tuscany. Our exceptional and
very knowledgeable local guide, Rachel, will join us and will remain with us for the next 6 days as
we explore the gardens of private
estates and villas in the countryside
as well as the large Baroque and
Renaissance gardens around
Rome.
We will plan a stop for
refreshments en route to the hotel
today depending on our flight
arrival time. Enjoy the balance of
the day at leisure. A leisurely stroll
around the estate might be in
order. We will dine together on property this evening.
Accommodations for 3 nights: Borgo Scopeto Relais. Set against the dramatic rolling countryside,
this Tuscan estate has been beautifully restored and converted into a deluxe hotel property, while
retaining its historical elegance. See full profiles of accommodations at the end of this document.
Day 2 – Monday, October 5: The Gardens of Siena. Although the province of Siena is mostly
known for its medieval castles, churches and hilltop towns, it is also home to some incredible
gardens! This morning, together with
Rachel and our driver, we will make
our way just over 45 min to Castello
di Celsa with its spectacular views
over a landscape that has not been
altered in centuries. The castle,
constructed as one of the Republic of
Siena's defense bastions, was
transformed into a residence in the
1500s by its owner, Mino Celsi, but
then destroyed by the imperial
Austro-Spanish troops under Charles
V. In 1802 the property passed into the hands of the Chigi family who converted the villa into a
neo-Gothic manor house. The residence, together with its garden, was restored yet again by the
current owners, the Aldobrandini family.
4
This 16th-century garden, most likely designed by the great Sienese architect Baldassare Peruzzi
has been overlaid by a formal parterre displaying the Aldobrandini coat of arms and leaving only
the elegant circular chapel as a record of
the architect's work. We will learn about
the evolution of these gardens on our 1-
hr staff-led tour this morning.
From Castello di Celsa we will make our
way 30 min to Villa di Vicobello, built in
the 16th
century and a fine example of a
Renaissance residence. Landscaping of
the 16th-century garden is also credited
to Baldassare Peruzzi and you can still
see traces of its classic style which was
modified in later years. Villa di Vicobello
is located at the top of a terraced hill and
each terrace hosts a myriad of natural
beauties, from lemon trees in large
baked clay vases to papyrus plants and
azaleas. After our staff-led garden tour
we will enjoy a delightful lunch together
on this tranquil property.
In the afternoon we will make our way
15 min to the house and gardens of Villa
Geggiano, a national monument that has
been in the Bianchi Bandinelli family
since 1527. Originally the family’s
summer house, the villa features an 18th
-
century décor and is still filled with
furnishings from this same period. The
estate comprises 50 acres including a
tree-lined avenue of cypresses and Holm oaks leading up to the gate, a Teatro di Verzura (an
outdoor theater that is still used in the summer), a tantalizing vegetable garden and approximately
20 acres of vineyards. The family first brought their Chianti to Britain in 1752 and today they
produce approximately 45,000 bottles of premium Organic Chianti Classico and IGT wines.
What better way to end our day than with a garden tour followed by a tasting of three of their fine
wines? Late afternoon we will return to our accommodations, 5 min away. After time to rest, we
will venture into town (15 min) for an authentic Tuscan dinner at Le Logge, a favorite of locals.
5
Day 3 – Tuesday, October 6: Settignano – Tranquilla! This morning Rachel and our driver will
lead us 75 min to the hills of Settignano. This largely undiscovered treasure has inspired artisans
and artists for hundreds of years.
Michelangelo spent much of his youth here
and Mark Twain wrote 1,800 pages
(including a first draft of Pudd'nhead
Wilson) during his stay. Settignano is a
wonderful example of small-town Tuscan
life, untouched by the contemporary
pressures and yet not behind the times!
We will start with a visit to the manicured
gardens of Villa Gamberaia where a staff
member will lead us on a private tour.
These serene and symmetrical terraced
gardens offer lovely views, shaded paths,
quiet corners, reflecting pools and splashes
of colorful flowers. This unique garden plan
and setting in the Tuscan landscape have
been studied and celebrated by architectural
historians and garden designers throughout
the centuries.
After our tour we will stop for lunch in town
before we make our way 10 min to the Villa
Peyron gardens at Fontelucente in Fiesole,
an ancient Etruscan city located high above
Florence. Villa Peyron is one of the best
maintained villas and gardens near Florence
and offers breathtaking views of the city. It
has been generously donated to the
Monumental Bardini Parks Foundation by
Paul Peyron, the owner. The garden is a
composition of park, woods, olive groves
and parterres and emerges from the lush forest with three beautiful terraces and many fountains of
which one dates back to the 6th
century. A staff member will lead us on a tour of this neo-
renaissance garden.
We will return to our accommodations (90 min) at the end of the day. Enjoy the balance of the
day and dinner on our own.
6
Day 4 – Wednesday, October 7: On to Rome. This morning we will depart Tuscany for the 4-hr
drive to Rome. En route (just over 2 hrs) we will stop at Castello Ruspoli in Vignanello for a tour
and lunch. Pope Paul III donated both the castle
and the land of Vignanello to his niece Beatrice
Farnese in 1531, marking the birth of the
Marescotti Ruspoli dynasty. The castle and its awe-
inspiring gardens, among the most notable in
Europe, have been in the hands of the Ruspoli
family ever since. Ottavia Orsini, who married
Marcantonio Marescotti, created a Giardino
all’Italiana following the latest 17th century fashions.
Some 400 years later, the garden still stands as it
did, making it one of the best-preserved
Renaissance gardens in Italy. Following lunch on
property in this grand setting, we will make our way
90 min to Rome and our next base in the city
center.
After check-in and time to freshen up, Rachel will
lead us on a walk to Villa Medici, a Renaissance
palace built for Cardinal Ricci da Montepulciano in
1540 and acquired by Ferdinando de' Medici in
1576. It remained in Medici’s hands until
Napoleon acquired it for the French Academy.
The villa's most famous resident was Galileo,
imprisoned here between 1630 and 1633 during his
trial. Villa Medici preserves an important art
collection, which is in part a legacy of the
Ferdinando de Medici collection, while other works
have been collected by the various directors of the
French Academy in Rome since its inception. A
staff member will lead us on a private tour
organized during the Academy’s closing hours. During the tour, we will discover the extraordinary
palace and the magnificent gardens, while learning about its architecture, its collection and the
history of the French Academy in Rome. To end our visit, we can enjoy a cocktail in one of the
garden squares of the Villa Medici (weather permitting). We will walk across the street tonight to
enjoy the classical Roman ambiance at Osteria St. Ana, a traditional Roman restaurant.
Accommodations for 4 nights: Hotel Locarno is a classically styled boutique property with a
glorious past located in the historic center of Rome, just steps from Piazza del Popolo and the
Tiber River
7
Day 5 – Thursday, October 8: Discovering Rome. This morning Rachel will lead us to Musei di
Villa Torlonia. The owner, Giovanni Torlonia, commissioned the design of the buildings by
architect Giuseppe Valadier in the early 19th century, but construction of the park was initiated
some three decades later, in 1832, at the request of his son, Alessandro. The heir commissioned
Giovan Battisti Caretti, Quintiliano
Raimondi and Giuseppe Jappelli to lay out
the gardens. The work of these three
architects resulted in a splendid English
style garden laid out with alleys and small
artificial ponds. Much of the garden and
the buildings were damaged during World
War II, but restored by the municipality of
Rome, which purchased the property in
1977. Rachel will guide us through the
gardens.
We will then make our way to Palazzo
Massimo, a treasure trove of classical art.
The magnificent and vibrantly colored
frescoes are the undisputed highlight of
this museum. They were originally used
as interior decor and provided a vivid
picture of the inside of a grand ancient
Roman villa. Particularly beautiful are the
frescoes from Villa Livia, one of the
homes of Livia Drusilla, the wife of
Augustus. These works cover an entire
room and depict a garden full of wild
tangled roses, pomegranates, iris and
camomile under a deep-blue sky. The
frescoes once adorned a summer
triclinium, a large living and dining area
built half underground to provide
protection from the heat. Time permitting
we might admire breathtaking sculptures
such as the 2nd-century-BC Greek bronze
Pugile (boxer), Ermafrodite dormiente
(Sleeping Hermaphrodite) and the idealized Il discobolo (Discus Thrower) as well as the exquisite
floor mosaics that carpeted the floors of plush villas of aristocratic Romans in the 13th and 14th
centuries.
8
After a midday break and time for lunch on our own (and perhaps some time for shopping!), we
will make our way from the Trevi Fountain to elegant Piazza Navona. The historic center of
Rome, called Centro Storico, is full of
stunning Baroque architecture and art,
as well as city squares that are both
charming and magnificent. During the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries,
Rome was the epicenter of the art
world, achieving the importance as an
artistic crossroad that Paris enjoyed at
the end of the nineteenth century.
The main players of the Baroque
movement in Rome were architects
Bernini and Borromini and the painter
Caravaggio, who left an enduring
imprint on the city. Rachel will share
with us some important landmarks
along the way. We will visit the church
of San Luigi dei Francesi near Piazza
Navona, one of the finest Baroque
squares in Europe. The Contarelli
Chapel within the church is famous for
housing three paintings on the theme
of Saint Matthew the Evangelist by the
Baroque master Caravaggio.
We’ll end the day today with a visit of
the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola,
designed by the Jesuit mathematician
Orazio Grassi and built in the 1700s.
The highlight is the ceiling painted
with the technique of trompe l’oeil or
optical illusion by Andrea Pozzo of the
Jesuit order. The great dome (or so
you think) that you see above you is
actually a flat painting with 3D effect! Before leaving, we will take a moment to pause on the steps
and enjoy the tiny piazza before us. It is like being on a baroque stage set.
Dinner is on our own this evening.
9
Day 6 – Friday, October 9: South Rome Gardens. Today we will venture deep into the beautiful
hills of Castelli Romani, 90 min south of Rome, to our first stop at Torrecchia Vecchia. In the
words of the writer Stephen Lacey: This property is as sensuous as Italian landscapes can be with
sun and cicadas; long-horned cattle grazing waist-high in wildflowers; cuckoos calling in the woods,
and a stone archway seducing you into a medieval village, long abandoned and encircling the house
in crumbling walls and towers.
Three decades ago Italian newspaper baron Prince Carlo Caracciolo bought Torrecchia Vecchia
with the intention to renovate and sell the property, but he and his wife, Violante fell in love and
could not part with it. The effort to restore this 1,500-acre property required the best ideas of both
master architect Gae Aulenti and English master garden designer, Dan Pearson. Architect Aulenti
converted the 18th-century granary into a modern main house and designed apartments inside the
footprint of the crumbled castle. Violante asked Pearson for a garden that looked as if it were just
about to be reclaimed by nature. It was to
grow out of the ruin of Torrecchia and be
part of it! The result is an air of simple,
romantic elegance verging on the wild. Old
climbing roses, wisteria and jasmine cascade
from the crumbling walls and towers adding
to the magical atmosphere.
After our tour, we will make our way 25 min
to Il Piccolo Ducato for a lovely lunch
before our next stop, the Gardens of Ninfa.
Ninfa is a splendid example of medieval
architecture, surrounded by nature, walls
and towers, churches, monasteries and
villages. The garden includes the remains of
the ancient city and is located at the foot of
the Lepini Mountains where many writers
(including Virginia Woolf, Truman Capote
and Moravia) were inspired. What is truly
unique about the garden is its geographic
location and climate which allows plants to
grow up to three times their normal size and
exceed their usual life span by several years. The sea is only a few miles away, a mountain shelters
it from the wind and protects it from marine currents, and a light rain falls every evening. We’ll
discover a crystalline river with banks covered in flowers, Japanese maple trees, chromatic apple
trees, Mexican Yuccas, orchids growing from cherry trees and seas of lavender. Rachel will lead us
on a tour through this landscape masterpiece with its incredible mix of color, scent and design! We
will return, 90 min, to Rome at the end of day. Dinner is on our own again this evening.
10
Day 7 – Saturday, October 10: Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa. Today we will make our way to
the famous gardens of Villa d'Este, located about an hour east of Rome. Rachel will lead us on a
tour of these celebrated gardens. The
Villa d’Este gardens had a profound
influence on the development of garden
design throughout Europe. These are
among the earliest and finest of
the giardini delle meraviglie and symbolize
the flowering of Renaissance culture. On
September 9, 1550, Cardinal Ippolito II
d'Este (1509-72) arrived in Tivoli, having
obtained the post of governor of the town.
He decided to build a splendid villa and
gardens covering a parcel of more than 11
acres. There is everything here from lilies
to gargoyles spouting water, torrential
streams, moss-covered fountains, lovely
promenades and waterfalls.
After our tour we can enjoy a fine lunch at
Sibilla, one of the oldest restaurants in the
world with one of the most breathtaking
panoramic views in Italy. This elegant
restaurant stands at the foot of the Temple
of Vesta and is known for its fine
traditional family cuisine.
In the afternoon we will make our way to
Hadrian's Villa, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site constructed at Tibur
(modern-day Tivoli) as a retreat from
Rome for Roman Emperor Hadrian
during the second and third decades of
the second century A.D. It is widely
believed that Hadrian was not fond of the
palace on the Palatine Hill in Rome,
leading to the construction of this
expansive retreat. During the latter years
of his reign, he actually governed the
empire from the villa. After Hadrian's death in 138 A.D., his successors preferred Rome as their
permanent residence, but the villa continued to be enlarged and further embellished.
11
During the decline of the Roman Empire, the villa fell into disuse and was nearly completely
destroyed. It was sacked and plundered by successive barbarian invaders and fell into neglect,
being used as a quarry by builders and lime-burners. Interest in the ruins was resurrected in the
fifteenth century by Pope Pius II (Aeneas
Silvius). Excavations to recover its glories
were ordered by Alexander VI at the
beginning of the sixteenth century. When
Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este began to
construct his nearby Villa d'Este, he
continued the excavations, supervised by
his architect Pirro Ligorio, to obtain
works of art to adorn it.
Rachel will guide us through Hadrian's
Villa, originally a complex of more than
30 buildings, covering an area of some
300 acres, of which much is still
unexcavated. The villa was perhaps the
greatest Roman example of an
Alexandrian garden, recreating a sacred
landscape. The complex included
palaces, several thermae, theatres,
temples, libraries, state rooms and
quarters for courtiers, praetorians and
slaves. The villa features numerous
architectural styles and innovations. The
domes of the steam baths have circular
holes at the apex to allow steam to escape.
This feature is much like one found in
the Pantheon, also built by Hadrian. Also,
the entire area is crisscrossed with a
network of underground tunnels. These tunnels were mostly used to transport servants and goods
from one area to another. The site was placed on the 100 Most Endangered Sites list of the World
Monuments Watch in 2006 because of the rapid deterioration of the ruins. Plan to enjoy a farewell
dinner this evening to cap our stay in Italy and the Eternal City.
Day 8 – Sunday, October 11: Arrivederci Italia! Our driver and ground representative will lead us
50 min to Rome Fiumicino International Airport for departure. A single group arrival transfer
is included (an additional fee will apply should you require a separate arrival transfer.) Individual
departure transfers to Rome Fiumicino Airport as needed are included.) We are happy to consult
with you should you wish to extend your stay in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

Accommodations:
TUSCANY - Borgo Scopeto Relais: This characteristic Tuscan estate, with a view over the city of
Siena, has been beautifully restored and is surrounded by hills and vineyards. The private
residence of the famous
Sozzini dynasty for five
centuries is now one of the
most exclusive hotels in the
area. In fact, the film Letters
from Juliet was made here.
The 58 rooms are all
different and perfectly
integrated inside the ancient
walls, and beautifully
furnished in a comfortable
style, giving them a modern
and exclusive touch while
respecting the historical
charm of the building. The
wellness center offers a wide
range of treatments focusing
on beauty and relaxation. Other facilities include two beautiful outdoor pools as well as tennis
courts. http://www.borgoscopetorelais.it/index_eng.html
13
ROME – Hotel Locarno: This elegant, highly-unique property originated in 1925 as a guesthouse
which its Swiss owners named Albergo Locarno. During the Dolce Vita days of the 1960s, the
property was the hotel of choice for
creative types including international film
directors, artists and musicians. Some
50 years later, following a comprehensive
refurbishment in 2013, the property
continues to attract this audience along
with international travelers looking for a
sense of place. Independently owned,
the property retains its position as a
boutique hotel with just 44 rooms.
Classic styling, real room keys vs cards,
period furnishing and touches such as a
birdcage elevator all recall 1920s
grandeur. While officially categorized as
a five-star hotel, the Locarno ranks as a
very strong 4.5 star in our estimation.
Rooms, which are housed in two interconnected buildings separated by an attractive courtyard (a
great spot for an aperitivo) all are different. The location on a quiet street just steps from the Tiber
and centrally-located Piazza del Popolo is excellent. What strikes many guests is the very excellent
staff from the reception team to management team and the head bar man. They truly enjoy
working together at Hotel Locarno and it shows. The bar is great and don’t miss the opportunity
to try one of the specialty cocktails. Our favorite on a recent visit was a modern twist on the classic
Milano-Torino, which features Campari Rosso and Vermouth. Another great spot for a drink is
the large rooftop terrace, which is a great place to enjoy the Skyline of the Eternal City.
