Hello everyone

Firstly, may I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.

A word of thanks to Doreen Powell and Joe Field for judging so competently at our championship

show. We are very grateful to them both for taking the time to write their comments on the en-

tries . I hope you’ll enjoy reading them!

Your committee has been hard at work since we last saw you in October planning the 3 club events

for 2008: the AGM, Open show (thanks to Angus Murray for agreeing to judge for us) and the

Championship Show. The AGM will be held at my house on Saturday 15 March and will start at

11h00—followed by drinks and snacks. I would like to remind everyone that their subs for 2008 are

now due. Please would you renew your membership as soon as possible?

A big thank you to everyone who submitted articles for publication: I really appreciate you taking

the trouble to send in items of interest.

Kind regards

Joyce Goldschmidt

Dear Members

Our New Year’s resolutions and wishes are still fresh in our minds and I truly hope yours will come true. I trust that you have remembered to include one for our Club and for dogdom as we shall need lots of support in 2008. Most of you are aware that new City By-laws pertaining to dog ownership will be put to table this year. Proposals include 2 dogs per flat, 4 per city property and 6 per agricultural grounds. Provision will be made for accredited breeders. I have met JP Smith, the City Councillor heading the relevant committee, and he has assured me that no by-laws will be rammed through. He is adamant though about the spaying and neutering of pets and that all dogs leaving their property must wear a collar with an ID disc. Please attend our AGM in March: hear all the latest news and get actively involved in dog-related affairs. Angus Murray and I are on a KUSA task team regarding these by-laws and need your input. I hope to see you there. A very sincere thank you to Joyce, our Editor, for assembling yet another interesting newsletter: especially as it is done during the holidays and in the sweltering heat. Read the magazine and see what activities we have lined up for you, our valued members. Remember to submit articles which will be of interest to other members! Best wishes for 2008.

500 g raw liver 1 cup wheat germ 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 cup corn meal ( mealiemeal or polenta) 2 raw eggs

♦ Mix all ingredients in blender ( or process liver in blender, then stir in other ingredients).

♦ Line 35 cm by 22 cm pan with aluminium foil and grease the foil. ♦ Spread liver mixture evenly in the pan. ♦ Bake at 180 degrees for 25-30 minutes. ♦ Cool, cut into small squares and store in plastic bags in the freezer. ♦ To use, thaw and refrigerate. ( I even give them to my dogs

straight from the freezer sometimes, and they love it.)

They are dead easy to make! Not only nicer, but cheaper than the commercial stuff.

DOCTOR DOLITTLE ?DOCTOR DOLITTLE ?DOCTOR DOLITTLE ?DOCTOR DOLITTLE ?

LISTENING TO THE ANIMALS ---- Anna Breytenbach For anyone who enjoys the company of animals and an appreciation of nature, the lament, “If only they could talk!” often voices itself. Consider

that “they” not only can, but do talk. There exists a universal language beyond words – an energetic communication between members of different species. Focusing only on the biological aspect of an animal can place one in the ruts of conventional notions and inhibit true seeing of the animal’s full personal-ity and life experience. We can learn so much from and about the animals in deeper ways than through physical observation alone. Communication creates a valuable bridge between the worlds of humans and animals, allowing amazing insights and mutual understanding. WHAT IS “ANIMAL COMMUNICATION”? Animal communication is natural; everyone can talk with animals! Most of

us have simply forgotten how, but can recall instances from childhood or other times in our lives when we’ve been connected to our intuitive abilities and perceived things in a non-physical manner. Animals obviously communicate through physical action (“body language”) and their own complex languages (vocalisation). They also communicate telepathically. People receive the messages to the degree they are listening, can tune in, or are perceptive to them. Telepathic communication involves the direct transmission of feelings, intentions, thoughts, mental images, emotions, impressions, sensations, and pure knowing. It is possible to have any sensory experience telepathically. The actual mechanism for this lies firmly in the scientific field of quantum physics. Thoughts and emotions lit-erally generate an electromagnetic consequence in the brain, and these

frequencies are available for perceiving – whether by a medical EEG machine or our own more complex receiving devices (our minds). Likewise, we can intentionally send thoughts or mental images to animals which they receive… remember the times you’ve quietly pondered taking the dog for walk only to find an excited reaction from the pooch at your silent mental musings? Indigenous peoples around the world who live(d) close in harmony with the earth know of this, deeply and intrinsically. Our so-called civilised world and conditioning deafens our ears to the complexity and subtlety all

around us. By quieting the mind and allowing our intuitive senses to come into their own, we can all access this ancient skill. It’s in our blueprint - our original design. What it really comes down to our willingness to listen again.

Continued from previous page.

2. TAKE CONTROL You must take control of all the wonderful things in your dog's life. This is the crux of the NILIF programme. You control everything. Playing, attention, food, walks, going in and out of the door, going for a ride in the car, going to the dog park. Anything and everything that your dog wants comes from you. If he's been get-ting most of these things for free, there is no real reason for him to respect your leadership or your ownership of these things. To implement the NILIF program you simply have to have your dog earn his use of your resources. He's hungry? No problem, he simply has to sit before his bowl is put down. He wants to play fetch? Great! He has to "down" before you throw the ball. Want to go for a walk or a ride? He has to sit to get his lead snapped on and has to sit while the front door is opened. He has to sit and wait while the car door is opened and listen for the word (I use "UP") that means "get into the car". When you return, he has to wait for the word that means "get out of the car" even if the door is wide open. Don't be too hard on him. He's already learned that he can make all of these decisions on his own. He has a strong history of being in control of when he gets these resources. Enforce the new rules, but keep in mind that he's only doing what he's been taught to do and he's going to need some time to get the hang of it all. The NILIF program should not be a long, drawn out process. All you need to do is enforce a simple command before allowing him access to what he wants. Dinner, for example, should be a two or three second encounter that consists of nothing more than saying "sit", then "good dog!", then putting the bowl down and walking away.

NILIF DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO RESTRICT THE AMOUNT OF ATTENTION YOU GIVE TO YOUR DOG. The NILIF concept determines who initiates the attention (you!), not the amount of attention. Go ahead and call your dog to you 100 times a day for hugs and kisses!! You can demand his at-tention - he may no longer demand yours! Within a day or two your dog will see you in a whole new light and will be eager to learn more. Use this time to teach new things, such as 'roll over' or learn the spe-cific names of different toys. If you have a shy dog, you'll see a more relaxed dog. There is no longer any rea-son to worry about much of anything. He now has complete faith in you as his protector and guide. If you have a pushy dog, he'll be glad that the fight for lead-ership is over and his new role is that of devoted and adored pet. Most of the principles I have described above will also apply to relationships within the family. If a child becomes the boss of the household and demands and gets attention, toys, cars, free time to wander the streets, spends hours on cell-phones and computers, has no idea how to pick the right kind of friends, in fact has to set his own limits, such a child will usually be unhappy and will often end up abusing alcohol, drugs and become infected with HIV or ruin her life by becoming preg-nant. So inculcate the mantra NILIF to the whole family. You might as well re-member it yourself!”

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Interspecies communication is wonderfully useful in both domestic pet and wildlife situations. We can find out the root cause behind behavioral issues, eg understanding the animal’s motivation for doing what they do. Take the case of a dog who suddenly starts

nibbling at the postman. There may be any number of reasons the dog has decided to embark on such a

mission. It might be fear, physical pain in the body, territory issues, jealousy, insecurity, based on a past traumatic experience, attention-getting, etc. Understanding the core need that the dog is trying to address (however inappropriately) allows us to effectively deal with the issue at hand. Often the need for training or behaviour modification interventions fall away when the underlying stressor or misunderstanding has been dealt with through communication. Other useful applications of this form of communication are to do with lifestyle changes, addressing emotional issues, demystifying sudden changes in

behaviour, describing physical symptoms, training, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, animals’ choices around euthanasia, and conflict between humans and the wild animals we’re encroaching upon. The primary benefit is increased awareness of the intelligence, beauty and wisdom of animals and enjoying enhanced relationships with them. Of course the requirements for real listening go beyond merely lending an ethereal ear. To truly know the perspective of another requires a suspension of judgment and stepping into full empathy, compassion and a receptive attitude of openness. In the words of Henry David Thoreau: “What a wonderful miracle if only we could look through each others’ eyes for an instant.”

HISTORY: The Border Terrier first appeared in the 18th century and has changed little since. They were used as working terriers in the Scottish Borders mainly hunting foxes but were also used to hunt rodents, otters and badgers. Their ancestry is not really known. Their appearance was never of great concern to their owners but their ability to go to ground after a fox was, so they were bred to have strong jaws, to be well boned but not heavy and to have a chest with sufficient capacity but narrow enough to allow them to get back out of any earth they entered. Their extra length of leg enabled them to

follow a horse so that they were there when they were needed. During their history they were known as the Reedwater Terriers and the Coquetdale Terriers but nowadays are referred to as Border Terriers. They are still work-ing terriers in the countryside but in urban areas are family companions.

APPEARANCE: The Border Terrier has an otter-shaped head, dark lively eyes, a broad skull and short, strong muzzle with a scissor bite. The V-shaped ears are on the sides of the head and fall towards the cheeks.

Acceptable colours are grizzle and tan, blue and tan (sometimes looks almost black), red grizzle, and wheaten, all colours with a dark muzzle preferred. White is not allowed, except for a small patch on the chest. The tail is relatively short and tapers from a thicker base to the tip.

SIZE: Weight : Dogs: 6 - 7 kgs and Bitches: 5 - 6½ kgs

COAT: The Border Terrier has a double coat consisting of a short, dense, soft undercoat and harsh, wiry weather and dirt resistant, close-lying outer coat with no curl or wave. This coat usually requires hand stripping

twice a year to remove dead hair. It then takes about eight weeks for the top coat to come back in. For some dogs, weekly brushing will suffice.

GROOMING

The durable, wiry coat needs brushing from time to time and the coat should be stripped by hand (not clipped), as the top coat becomes long and shaggy and eventually

dies. The Border Terrier sheds little hair. Only bathe them when necessary.

TEMPERAMENT

Border Terriers are friendly, smart, energetic, playful, affectionate, intelligent, even-tempered, obedient, alert and fearless. They usually get on well with other dogs.

THE NILIF SYSTEM THE NILIF SYSTEM THE NILIF SYSTEM THE NILIF SYSTEM (PART 2)(PART 2)(PART 2)(PART 2)

Reproduced with kind permission of Gerry Retief, Veterinarian, entrepreneur, Forum administrator, and author.

“In my last newsletter we talked about the importance of not allowing your dog to become the boss of the household. We will now explore how to implement the Nothing In Life Is Free concept.

Once you have very firmly established who the alpha dog in the house is, you can reinforce that with the NILIF system. The dog must understand that Nothing In Life Is Free. Start with food. He must be made to understand that he won't get his food until he performs a simple task like sitting, staying, or lying down. A very powerful way to reinforce your alpha status is to get him to lie down on command. Lying down in front of an alpha dog is the ultimate gesture of submis-sion for a subordinate dog. Once he is lying down, praise him and reward him with a favourite titbit. You can also use any of the 'sit' ’stand’ or 'rest' commands to get him to earn the right to play, retrieve, romp or any other activity he wants to engage in.

Lets have another look at the system one step at a time: (article by Deb McKean):

1. ELIMINATE ATTENTION SEEKING BEHAVIOUR When your dog comes to you and nudges your hand or puts his chin on your lap, he is saying, stroke me! Pet me!". It should be clear to you by now that you have to ignore this behaviour. Don't say "no" or push him away. Simply pretend you don't notice him. When your dog learns that the behaviour that used to get your attention don't work any more, he's going to try much harder. If you give him attention during that time, you'll have to work that much harder to get him turned around again. Telling him "no" or pushing him away is not the kind of at-tention he's after, but it's still attention. Completely ignoring him will work faster and better. After a time he'll realise that this is not working any more, and he'll stop. The top ranking dogs in a pack can demand attention from the lower ranking ones, not the other way around. When you give your dog attention on demand you're telling him that he has more status in the pack than you do. Timid dogs become stressed by having this power and may become clingy. They're never sure when you'll be in charge so they can't relax. What if something scary hap-

pens, like a stranger coming in the house? Who will handle that? The timid dog that is demanding of attention can be on edge a lot of the time because he has more responsibility than he can handle. If the dog is naturally dominant, he may assume the 'alpha' status. He will then become difficult to handle when he is told to "sit" or "down" or some other de-mand is placed on him. This type of dog is not stressed out by his leadership status: it's the lack of consistency. Having no one in the pack that is clearly the leader is a bigger problem than having the dog assume that role full time. Dogs are happiest when the pack order is stable. Tension is created by a constant fluctuation of pack leadership. /cont...

However, if they dislike another dog they will not hesitate to start a fight and, as with most terriers, it can be difficult to stop them. They can make wonderful family pets as they are good with children and thrive on human interaction and attention. They will get along well with a family cat that is in

the home, but stray cats or your neighbour’s cat may soon learn that your dog

is not their friend. Border Terriers must be trained carefully from the begin-ning to learn proper social behavior with other animals.

EXERCISE

Borders will adapt to the activity levels of their owners. They do not demand exercise - but love it when they get it. With sufficient length of leg to achieve reasonable speed, a Border will hike, bike, and run with its owner but just as happily while-away the day lying in the sun. A Border Terrier does not mind being left alone but, as it is intelligent and loves company, he is not suited to households where people are away all day, every day. If you are taking your

Border Terrier for a jog or walk in the park, make sure it is on a leash, as they are notorious for chasing small creatures and any moving object. The breed will do well in an apartment dwelling provided they receive enough physical exercise and mental stimulation.

TRAINING & ABILITY:

Being bred to work cooperatively with people, Borders do well in task-oriented activities. They are intelligent and eager to please, but they retain the capacity for independent thinking and initiative that were bred into them for working foxes underground. They take training for tasks very well, but appear less

tractable if being taught mere tricks. The breed has excelled in agility training, but they are quicker to learn jumps and see-saws than weaving poles. Their love of people and even temperament make them fine therapy dogs, especially for children and the elderly, and they are occasionally used to aid the

blind or deaf. Border Terriers are quick learners, but training must be done with praise, motivation, reward, respect, patience & consistency: they will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods that break their spirit. Today the Border Terriers are used for tracking, agility, competitive obedience, showing and hunting.

IRRESPONSIBLE/INCOMPIRRESPONSIBLE/INCOMPIRRESPONSIBLE/INCOMPIRRESPONSIBLE/INCOMPETENT VETERINARY ADVICEETENT VETERINARY ADVICEETENT VETERINARY ADVICEETENT VETERINARY ADVICE At about Noon on 04 November 2007 I took my brood bitch, Candy, to the Emergency Veterinary Depot in Rosmead Avenue Kenilworth, on the advice of the after hours doc-tor of Blue Cross. Her waters had broken and the placenta had detached the previous evening and Candy was now stressed. The Veterinary Surgeon, Dr XX decided to take an X-ray. With a substandard image for which he said I would not be charged, he pointed out 6 unborn puppies which he declared to be dead. He said that the charge for a Caesarean Section would be in the vicinity of R 10 000.00! I asked him to do what was necessary to induce the birth of the dead pups. He said that he would keep me posted per telephone, and that he would be leaving at 19h00. I sat glued to the phone for the afternoon. Not having heard from him by 18h45, I phoned him. Can you believe it, he said that he had been trying in vain to tele-phone me. He reported that there was no further progress. Later that night and at about 05h30 the next morning, I spoke to the night Surgeon. He suggested that I collect Candy and take her to the Blue Cross to abort by Caesar-ean Section. When I called to collect Candy at 06h30, I was presented a bill for in

excess of R 2 400.00. I had been charged for 2 X-RAYS. Profuse sympathy was given that the pups were dead. I then proceeded to the Blue Cross where an early to work receptionist admitted me and Candy and left a note for the dead pups to be aborted by caesarean section. At about 08h30 I was called by Dr Leone De Klerk who advised that she detected life in the pups! At about 15h00 I collected Candy and 5 healthy puppies out of 6. All credit to Dr De Klerk for her enthusiasm and the tenacity and endurance of Candy. I subsequently called Dr XX to complain about his inefficiency. He told me that I had spoilt his day! His Clinic could not afford the luxury of a scanner. Can you believe it? Such an expensive emergency clinic cannot afford a scanner. No apology— just a complaint that I had spoilt his day!

A lady awoke one morning and discovered her dog was not moving. She called her vet who asked her to bring the dog in. After a brief examination, the vet pronounced the dog dead. "Are you sure?", the distraught woman asked. "He was a great family pet. Isn't there anything else you can do?" The vet paused for a moment and said, "There is one more thing we can do." He left the room for a moment and came back carrying a large cage with a cat in it. The vet opened the cage door and the cat walked over to the dog. The cat sniffed the dog from head to toe and walked back to the cage. "Well, that confirms it." the vet announced. "Your

dog is dead." Satisfied that the vet had done everything he possi-bly could, the woman sighed, "How much do I owe you?" "That will be $330." the vet replied. "I don't believe it!!!", screamed the woman. "What did you do that cost $330!? "Well", the vet replied, "it's $30 for the office visit and $300 for the cat scan."

This meant that the litter he recently sired could be registered with a Champion as the sire!
