OBSERVE AND DISCUSSTake a walk around your house.

How many inventions can you count?

Try to imagine what life was like before them.

People who create inventions are called inventors.

Inventors need to plan, do, and review a lot

before their inventions work.

What do you think this inventor (Clement Ader) was trying to invent?

PLAN DO REVIEW

The first airplane that flew was invented by the Wright Brothers.

But, they learned a lot from the inventors who had tried before them!

Yahoooo!

Did you guess an airplane?

Speaking of time….

Do you know what these inventions were used for?

Try to guess…

Did you guess for telling time?

A long time ago, when clocks and watches didn’t

exist, people invented ways to keep track of time.

These are just some of them.

Good night Good morning

Thousands of years ago, people figured out the time of day by looking at the sun as it crossed the sky.

Good night Good morning

When the sun seemed directly over their heads, they would know it was half way between day and night.

Do you know what time that is? YES! Midday (12:00), lunch time!

But there was a big problem with only using the sun as a clock…

Can you guess what the problem was?

Yes! They couldn’t tell the time during the night!

So inventors kept

planning, doing,

Until…

and reviewing…

DRUM ROLL…

The first mechanical clock was invented, 600 hundred years ago, before electricity!

You had to wind it

up!

Different types of wind up clocks were used until electricity was invented.

Oh no! When do I go to school?

If you forgotto wind them up,they would stop

working!

Finally, electric clocks were invented 150 years ago.

Electricity made the clocks wind upall by

themselves.

What kinds of electric clocks do you have at home?

Digital clocks just have numbers.

Analog clocks have hands.

Small hand (Hour)

Big hand(Minutes)

Hour Minutes

Living with electric clocks and watches made life easier to organize.

It’s 8:10 (10 minutes after 8). Time to go to school!

It’s 12:00 (12 o’clock).Time for lunch!

It’s 7:00 (7 o’clock).

Time to get up!

Maybe I can

even design

a clock!

Wow! Clocks sure have changed over « time »!

Next week, during Project Week, you are going to have the time of your life!

The project you will be making is a surprise, but here’s a little clue…

Takes some time, To tell the time,

We have no time to lose!
