Call 357-5510 for more info. God Bless You!! Reflection Last weekend, we started our reflection by tracing the growth of the early church and how while their number was increasing, they were also being challenged by attendant problems like persecution from outside and division from within. Persecution had led them to disperse, and that had helped bring in Hellenists (Jews not born in Israel) into the fold hence the internal division which in turn led to the creation of the office of deacons. These experiences must have led the Chief Apostle Peter in our second reading of today to envisage a situation of open hostility where Christians are made to suffer for doing good hence he teaches Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope”. No matter how hostility comes to us, it must be met with bold witnessing inspired by the Spirit of Truth. Bold witnessing is what Philip did today in our first reading by going into the land of Samaria – a hostile territory of the Samaritans, Israels neighbors that were considered foreigners and heretics. We are well aware that Jews and Samaritans were sworn enemies and constantly opposing each other. Only the Holy Spirit could have empowered Philip to embark on such a journey to preach the good news. Only the Holy Spirit could have effected the fruits of that labor: attention to the word of God, healing, unity and most importantly, joy: With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by PhilipThere was great joy in that city” (1 st reading) At the end of the first reading, we even see an early sacrament of confirmation where, with imposition of hands, the apostles imparted the Holy spirit on the Samaritans, who will in turn impart same on others. Next Thursday is Ascension Thursday. Although the celebration for convenience sake has been moved to next weekend, the significance of the actual day - forty days from Easter cannot be over emphasized. Stemming from this solemnity is another 'day-based' solemnity - Pentecost which is fifty days from Easter. Today's readings are designed to prepare us for these two great celebrations that will wrap up the Easter season. In these readings, Jesus is already outlining life for his followers without his physical presence with reference to the ascension and the assurance of his eternal spiritual presence with the promise of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always....In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me ... you are in me and I in you" (Gospel). 1st Reading ACTS 8:5-8, 14-17 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed the Christ to them. With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing. For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice, came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured. There was great joy in that city. Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit

Responsorial Psalm PS 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7,16, 20

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Shout joyfully to God, all the earth, sing praise to the glory of

his name; proclaim his glorious praise. Say to God, “How

tremendous are your deeds!”

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

“Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to

your name!” Come and see the works of God, his tremendous

deeds among the children of Adam.

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they

passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. He rules by his

might forever.

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has

done for me. Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer

or his kindness!

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

2nd Reading 1 PT 3:15-18

Beloved: Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a rea-son for your hope, but do it with gentleness and rever-ence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to

Gospel JN 14:15-21

Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him

St. Vincent DePaul If you are needing help or groceries, please confidentially call 618-318-6765 to see if our St. Vincent DePaul Society can help you.

Reflection-Continued Understanding the two realities of physical and spiritual presence and their inter relationship is very important in our Christian life. It underlines what is suffered in the body and what is rewarded in the spirit: "For Christ also suffered for sins ... that he might lead you to God....Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit" (2nd reading). It also explains how the power of the spirit energizes the weakness of the flesh. Hence the Spirit-filled Philip went down to Samaria and was able to perform signs: "... Many paralyzed or crippled people were cured" (1st reading). Imagine how lifeless and powerless the first created man, Adam must have been until God breathed His life-giving spirit into him. The life-giving spirit which energizes the physical being of man is constantly weighed down by man's sinful nature like a rechargeable battery which runs down from usage. The only way to keep it going is constant recharge hence the promise of the Holy Spirit. The problem is what Jesus had said about Him: "... the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him" (gospel). And in His absence, the evil spirit wreaks havoc, sowing seeds of despair, lies and fear. In order to accept the Holy Spirit, you need to 'see and know him'. That is to say, you have to believe and be conscious of him. You need to prepare yourself so that he will make a home in you and live with you. When this is done, you are empowered to defend your faith or hope, to defeat physical sufferings, keep the commandments and even impart the same life-giving spirit to others. Philip, Peter and John did it to the people of Samaria as we heard today. Our blessed mother Mary did it to Elizabeth just to mention but a few. You and I can do it if He dwells in us. This is the time to pay attention like the people of Samaria did. The ten days from Ascension to Pentecost is given to us for preparation. If you want Him, you have got to prepare. What do you intend to do?

God bless you!

door of the Joel Center at St. Bruno for anyone

wishing to drop collection envelopes off.

Sixth Sunday of Easter – 17 May 2020

Acts 8:5-8, 14-17. Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20. 1 Peter 3:15-18. John 14:15-21.

Not Orphaned! Because the risen Lord and the Spirit of Truth are always with us, we are not abandoned. Because we are not abandoned, we must exhibit both love and obedi-ence. Saint Peter proclaims in the Second Reading, “Always be ready to give an explanation…for the reason of your hope.” Act accordingly.

• How will my every action proclaim Christ’s presence in my life and in the life of the world?

• How can I advocate, aid another’s need this week?

Whom will I love, how will I love as Jesus Christ loves me?

Respect Life Corner- In Acts 16, we learn that Paul and Timothy had plans to preach the gospel message to the people of Asia, but they were prevented by the Holy Spirit from doing so. They surely wondered and were not told why. Still, it didn’t prevent them from continuing their mission to proclaim the gospel message. They headed to other areas, Phrygia and Galatia. Their experiences remind us how during this time of uncertainty we are called to do what we can with what we are given. It is our job to “bloom where we are planted”-even if it feels as though we have been planted for a while! Learn, Act, Connect and Pray- To nurture our spiritual lives, consider adding a daily online Mass or an extra Mass to spend some extra time with our Lord. It will certainly elevate your at-home experience and is the ultimate form of “self- care.” Like Paul and Timothy, our priests are doing a tremendous job sharing the Good News when things don’t seem so good! God is still in control and willing our good. God calls us to trust in Him. He is in our midst. Celebrate His love for you today!
