…providing support and protection for your body since

1999-ish.

Bones are living tissue!Every movement we make is possible

because of the INTERACTION of muscles with the SKELETAL SYSTEM.

The skeletal system is made up of a strong, connective tissue called BONE.

The skeletal system does 3 things:It serves as the ANCHOR for all the body’s

MOVEMENT.It provides SUPPORT.It PROTECTS soft organs inside the body.

2 Types of Bone Tissue

COMPACT boneFunctions as the basic SUPPORTIVE tissue

of the body. The SKELETON.The outer layer of compact bone is HARD

and TOUGH.It covers the OUTSIDE of most bones.

2 Types of Bone Tissue (cont.)

SPONGY boneMade up of a CALCIUM network.Less DENSE; strong but lightweight.MARROW is found in the spongy bone.Marrow produces RED blood cells.BLOOD VESSELS transport new red blood

cells from the marrow and carry materials and nutrients to and from the bone.

ReviewWhat are the functions of the two types of

bone tissue?

What are the main divisions of the human skeleton?

Name 3 types of movement produced by moveable joints and give an example of each.
