Public Relations Manager SMTT Overview Santa Monica Travel & Tourism, Inc. is a non-profit, non-member organization governed by a board of 11 community individuals. SMTT is the official travel and tourism promotion agency for the City of Santa Monica. It is our job to promote Santa Monica and encourage visitors to stay longer and enjoy more of what our destination has to offer. SMTT operates five (5) locations: Visitor Information Kiosk in Palisades Park; Visitor Information Center at the Santa Monica Pier; Visitor Information Cart on the 3rd Street Promenade; Visitor Information Center on Main Street; and, a Mobile Information Vehicle. Position Overview The Public Relations Manager oversees a strategic public relations program with targeted outreach to local, domestic and international media that consistently generates positive media coverage of Santa Monica as a travel destination and of Santa Monica Travel & Tourism as a driver of a sustainable local economy. Responsible for all proactive and reactive community and media relations. Supervises third party communications agencies. Acts as SMTT liaison within the regional tourism, non-profit and local community. Responsibilities 40% Community Relations Liaises with board members to discuss most effective ways to Champion the Value of Tourism to the Santa Monica Community. Continually reports to stakeholders on these efforts. Works with local media and community organizations to increase local awareness of the economic value of tourism and strengthen SMTT’s reputation in the community. Conducts and prepares leadership staff for interviews and speaking opportunities. Extensive writing of speeches, content, articles, scripts, etc. Represents SMTT on local boards and committees and at community events as needed. Monitors local press and channels to identify potential issues and recommends course of action/response. Manages and continually updates crisis communications plan as needed. Establishes, maintains and constantly expands working relationships with local, regional and international tourism industry partners, successfully soliciting their participation in SMTT PR programs. 40% Consumer Public Relations Creates a comprehensive and innovative communications program with targeted outreach to domestic and international media through strategic and timely PR campaigns. Manages 2 contracted PR firms to maximize media opportunities and story generation in target markets (Australia and United Kingdom – potential to add firms in other markets). Oversees writing and distribution of press materials including media alerts, fact sheets, speaking points, press releases and e-newsletters for domestic and international PR efforts. Vets, secures and hosts media on press visits, site tours, photo shoots and filmings. Develops targeted pitches for Visit CA media missions and key media outlets. Analyses research and global trends to support strategic PR efforts and communicates to stakeholders. Represents SMTT via public presentations, media missions and events internationally and domestically. Tracks and monitors media operations and reports the results regularly to senior staff and stakeholders. Recommends and implements improvements as needed. Tracks results and effectiveness of all programs for which he/she is responsible.

20% Management

• Responsible for hiring, training and professional development of shared Marketing/PR Assistant. • May be responsible for management of interns as needed. • Sets annual media development budget and continually monitors expenses throughout the fiscal

year. Requirements

• 4-6 years of professional experience in public relations, media or marketing. • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field. • Previous experience working with international media and/or travel and lifestyle media. • Excellent writing (including AP style) and editing skills paired with a strong creative sensibility and

strategic mindset. • Social media savvy. • International travel experience preferred and foreign language skills a plus. • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. • Excellent verbal communication skills, comfortable with public speaking, presentations and on-

camera interviews. • Attention to detail and problem solving skills. • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software, Mac, database experience. • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and possession of a clean driving record. • This is an at-will position.
