Q2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR

SOCIAL GROUPS?

WHO IS MY SOCIAL GROUP?

My magazine represents the social group of both genders ranging from the ages of 15-25. The under-appreciated genre of indie of which has grown over the years into something that is still seen as non-mainstream music yet somehow has the cool aura around it. The underrated and interesting indie genre music magazines are read as a way to inform oneself about the general happenings of the indie world, due to the fact that people who listen to this genre are unable to potentially get all the information about the indie bands and singers as they are publicised everywhere as most of the pop genre does.

HOW DID I DECIDE HOW TO REPRESENT THEM?

At the start I was unable to comprehend how I would be able to represent my chosen social group. I chose to do research methods, such as primary research at the local supermarket at the magazine section and secondary research where I looked at the many existing indie magazines. The difference between indie and pop is that while pop is everywhere and as such available to anyone who wishes to have it, indie is more personal and private. Only people who actually seek them out and wish to utilise it actually know about them and as such develops a much closer personal relationship. Which is further helped by the fact that indie singers and bands are not as famous and thus easier to develop a personal relationship in some cases.

THE CONTENT…

The content was chose accordingly to suit my target market and aimed social group, as they were old enough to know about the basis of society, the models weren’t sexualised but content may be slightly mature at times as indie genre is typically that way since it’s a genre that older teenagers and young adults get into mostly, which is not to say older adults wouldn’t like indie but the main social group would be around the 15-25 age range. The typical mood surrounding my magazine is one of relaxation and to just enjoy oneself, and as such maintains it’s simplistic vibe with mainly darker colour while showing the models being normal and having fun as it allows the reader to hold them in personal identity in a healthy way.

PROPS…

Props were the expressions, the makeup and the clothes. I tried to make it as indie as possible – sticking to the grungy look without taking away the viewpoint that the models are actually the same as the reader as opposed to pop genre who show the models and singers in a manner that is ethereal and this impacts the readers in negative ways, setting an expectation that can never be reached without the extensive help of Photoshop and the correct lighting. The make up job was done well edging towards a darker side, and ensuring the use of eyeliner a thing that is largely used by my target audience. The male model was somewhat of a contradiction being dressed brightly. However he maintained good expression throughout the Photoshoot as did the female which altogether added for a perfect front cover and double page spread.
