Genre of my Magazine• My magazine was set to target and attract different social group predominately black females between the age of

14-24 and finally boys from different ethnic groups, while living in different locations. • My magazine represent a particular social group through it many factors shown directly and indirectly throughout

the magazine. Starting with the representation of gender, my magazine features a female model/artist- CECE BROWN on the front cover who is the new face to Soul/RnB and is admired by many females. CECE BROWN is now being known all-round the world which would allow my demographics to easily familiarise with her quite effortlessly. My magazine cover

. As Madonna is widely known around the world it will allows my demographics to easily familiarise with her quite effortlessly. My magazine cover features a lot of female musicians as female artist are commonly admired by a majority of female audiences, I purposely chose to represent my feature artist and others in a powerful, dominant, influential and modern way unlike the other representation of females in other magazines. I want the artist in my magazine to be representative of my demographic, moving away from the stereotyped ideologies of females in the media, such as innocent, dependent moreover exploited. However although I did use a large number of female artist in my magazine I did not want my magazine to be deemed as a sexist, feminist cult who exclude men. Instead I wanted to ensure that my magazine could be easily notified as a magazine targeted at women hence the outnumbering ratio of female artist compare to men, however these ratio will change over time as the magazine develops and increases. Although gender is not a main factor of my magazine it is an aspect in which helps attract and represent my demographic hence the strong, overused reference and feature to female artist, this was only due to this magazine being my first issue and I wanted to represent my demographic somewhat accurately by representing artist in positive, truthful, open manner in which my demographic may aspire or be attracted to become.

Choice of model

• Starting with the representation of gender, my magazine features a female model/artist- CECE BROWN on the front cover who is the new face to Soul/RnB and is admired by many females. CECE BROWN is now being known all-round the world which would allow my demographics to easily familiarise with her quite effortlessly

• My magazine is mainly aimed at black Americans, Hispanic and American's, women only because my issue would mainly be distributed in America (CONDE NAST PUBLICATIONS) unlike in the UK where a large quantity is Caucasian woman. Therefore to address that particular social group I use and reference certain cultural preferences which would be of a high interest such as particular artist/band or reference of a particular genre of music, as my magazine is mostly mainstream Soul/RnB magazine. But my magazine doesn’t specifically target or portray one ethnicity throughout. I used a range of different artist from different ethnic background and countries that produce Soul/RnB music.

My music magazine will be highly ethnocentric and the reason behind this is that artist and bands will be displayed, featured or shown in my magazine for their musical achievements and not their background. This will be very reflective of my demographics who will come from a vast range of backgrounds, and I want my magazine to be representative of that, as does not represented or portray one ethnicity higher than or stereotypes different ethnicity. .

Clothing and props

MAKE-UP:I told my model to wear minimal make-up but a lot of RED lipstick. The girls would be able to relate to her minimal, make-up style and the colourful lips.

CLOTHING:The type of clothing my model wore was very chic and soulful. The clothing shows what black women/ white women might wear on a daily basis. Their clothing would usually be vibrate with some accessories to compliment their body. As Alvarado (1987) would say they are very exotic in their clothing's.

PROPS:Holding a microphone in the DPS, this connotes RnB/Soul as people who want to be individual and shine on the spotlight.

Language and colour scheme

LANGUAGE:My target The language incorporated in my magazine is both formal and informal to compliment on that fact that my target audience use both formal and informal language. Also in magazines like VIBE and RnB formal and informal language was used.

COLOUR SCHEME:My colour scheme are Red, White, Black and a hint of light brown. This colour connate danger, love and life/pure.The colours are unisex and attracts to both boys, and girls because of what they connote. I think they attract to my target demographic very well.

Another aspect of my magazine in which I used to represent my demographics was the Age. In order to represent/attract a particular age group, one must use language, semiotics and materials in which that particular age group is familiar and can identify with. As the age of my demographic is of an older generation (20-40) which means certain subjects may not be of interest to my demographics, such as in a younger demographic magazine the branding, clothing and certain band members of the musician is the main importance to the demographic i.e. looking at my comparative magazine, NME referring to November2013 issue the positioning, eye contact, lighting est. of Arctic monkeys on the front cover had a focal point to which was the main band signer. This positioning of the band on the front cover is quite reflective of the ideology of the demographic of the magazine, seeing the lead singer as of a higher importance or status compare to the rest of the band members. However in an older demographic magazine photographs of band members usually show all band members in an equal status and important, no references are made to a particular member. This shows that an older demographic see the importance of all members of the ban. Another way in which age is referenced in a magazine is through the language used in the magazine, as observed in my earlier researches, an older audience tend to have a wider range of lexical whereas a younger demographic tend to have a restricted vocabulary.
