No doubt, there are many people who do not quite appreciate when we talk of Islam. Islam is notonly a set of rituals, traditions and spiritual doctrines. Islam is also a code for every Muslim, whichregulates his life and his conduct in even politics and economics and the like. It is based upon highestprinciples of honour, integrity, fair play and justice for all.(March 5,1948)

With faith, discipline and selfless devotion to duty, there is nothing worthwhile that you cannotachieve.

You have to stand guard over the development and maintenance of Islamic democracy, Islamicsocial justice and the equality of manhood in your own native soil.

We must work our destiny in our own way and present to the world an economic system based ontrue Islamic concept of equality of manhood and social justice. I shall always be guided by the principles of justice and fairplay without any, as is put in the politicallanguage, prejudice or ill-will, in other words, partiality or favouritism. My guiding principle will be

We have weathered the worst storms and the safety of the shore, though distant, is in sight. We canlook to the future with robust confidence provided we do not relax and fritter away our energies ininternal dissensions. There never was greater need for discipline and unity in our ranks. It is only withunited effort and faith in our destiny that we shall be able to translate thePakistanof our dreams intoreality.

Without education it is complete darkness and with education it is light. Education is a matter of lifeand death to our nation. The world is moving so fast that if you do not educate yourselves you will be

not only completely left behind, but will be finished up. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) had enjoined hisfollowers to go even toChinain the pursuit of knowledge. If that was the commandment in those dayswhen communications were difficult, then, truly, Muslims as the true followers of the glorious heritageof Islam, should surely utilize all available opportunities. No sacrifice of time or personal comfortshould be regarded too great for the advancement of the cause of education.

We have reached at a juncture where i shall be neglecting my prime duties if i donot make themuslims point of view known to this august audience.

Muslim feelings have been stirred over the issue ofPalestine. I know Muslims will not shirk from anysacrifice if required to help the Arabs who are engaged in the fight for their national freedom. Youknow the Arabswho are fighting for the freedom of their country, have been described asgangsters, and subjected to all forms of repressionBut no nation, no people who are worth living asa nation, can achieve anything great without making great sacrifices, such as the Arabs of Palestineare making. All our sympathies are with those valiant martyrs who are fighting the battle of freedomagainst usurpers. They will have their rights and privileges and no doubt, along with it goes the obligation of citizenship.

You have the power; you must learn the art to use it; you must tryand understand the machinery. I naturally welcome your statement that you do not believe in provincialism. You must learn todistinguish between your love for your province and your love and duty to the State as a whole. Ourduty to the State takes us a stage beyond provincialism. It demands a broader sense of vision, and(a) greater sense of patriotism. Our duty to the State often demands that we must be ready tosubmerge our individual or provincial interests into the common cause for common good. Our duty tothe State comes first: our duty to our Province, to our district, to our town and to our village andourselves comes next.(Speech, Islamia College, Peshawar, 12 April 1948)

When we first raised our demand for a sovereign and independent State of Pakistan there were not afew false prophets who tried to deflect us from our set purpose by saying thatPakistanwas noteconomically feasible. They painted an extremely dark picture of the future of our State and itsfinancial and economic soundness. The very first bedget presented by you must have caused ashock to those false prophets. It has already demonstrated the soundness ofPakistans finance andthe determination of its Government to make them more and more sound and strong..I have nodoubt in my mind about the bright future that awaitsPakistanwhen its vast resources of men andmaterial are fully mobilized. Representative governments and representative institutions are no doubt good and desirable, but

when people want to reduce them merely to channels of personal aggrandizement, they not only losetheir value but earn and bad name. Islam and its idealism have taught democracy. Islam has taught equality, justice and fairplay toeverybody. What reason is their for anyone to fear democracy, equality, freedom on the highest

We maintain and hold that Muslims and Hindus are two major nations by any definition or test of anation. We are a nation of a hundred million people, and, what is more, we are a nation with our owndistinctive culture and civilization, language and literature, art and architecture, names andnomenclature, sense of value and proportion, legal laws and moral codes, customs and calendar,history and traditions, aptitudes and ambitions in short, we have our own distinctive outlook on lifeand of life. During may talks with one or two very high-ranking officers I discovered that they did not know the

implications of the Oath taken by the troops ofPakistan. Of course, an oath is only a matter of form;what is more important is the true spirit and the heart. But it is an important form and I would like totake the opportunity of refreshing your memory by reading the prescribed oath to you: I solemnlyaffirm, in the presence of Alimighty God, that I owe allegiance to the Constitution and the Dominion ofPakistan and that I will as in duty bound honestly and faithfully serve in the Dominion of PakistanForces and go within the terms of my enrolment wherever I may be ordered by air, land or sea andthat I will observe and obey all commands of any officer set over me(Address, Staff College,Quetta, 14 June 1948)

The great majority of us are Muslims. We follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).But make no mistakePakistanis not a theocracy or anything like it. Islam demands from us the

tolerance of other creeds and we welcome in closest association with us all those who of whatevercreed, are themselves willing and ready to play their part as true and loyal citizens ofPakistan.(Broadcast talk to the people of Australia,19 February 1948)

We have undoubtedly achievedPakistan, and that too without bloody war and practically peacefullyby moral and intellectual force and with the power of the pen, which is no less mighty than the swordand so our righteous cause has triumphed.
