what other people say. In the musical I wrote it for, it

is sung by a poor farmer whose hardships do not stop

bring people together. This dance represents Brazil,

Senegal, India and the U.S. as separate cultures to

dakota’s WordsKelsey BondSeventh Grade

My name is Dakota Henshaw, and my life is anything

but normal. After all, having cerebral palsy doesn’t make

for a very normal life.

I live in a house. I eat food. I’m a human being. But I

can’t live in that house without someone always there,

watching me, making sure I don’t lose my balance or have

one of my fits. I can’t eat that food without it first being

spoon-fed to me as if I were a baby. And, let’s be honest,

most people really don’t see me as a real human being.

They talk about me as if I weren’t right there, as if I

were deaf or something. They look away when they see

me in my wheelchair with my head lolling to one side, my

limbs mostly immobile. I can’t control that. It’s not my

fault. But the worst part is they think I’m dumb. I mean

first-class, can’t-tell-mouse-from-elephant stupid.

I don’t have the kind of cerebral palsy that affects

someone’s intelligence. I can see, read, count and add in

my head without a problem. The real problem is that I

can’t tell people that. My parents seem to be the only

people who believe the details of my diagnosis and know

I’m as smart as anyone else, despite skeptical looks from

people who have seen me.

My first-place regret about having cerebral palsy is

that I can’t write. I love words. I love the way they sound

and the way they can be twisted, manipulated, and paired

with other words to create new worlds of sound, texture,

flavor, color, and music. In my head I like to create stories

about the things around me. I start with making phrases,

then I mush the phrases together into a little story and

add onto it.

words. My choreography represents how our

generation must inspire the next generation just like

we were inspired by the generations before us. We

have to inspire them to dream of all the possibilities in

who they want to be. At the beginning of the dance, I

am a little girl and the pillow represents the inspiration

the dance I pass on the inspiration to a little girl who

represents generations to come.”

I can still remember it, how it all began. A rumble...A

wiz ...A tremble… Then the boom. The boom that stole my

hearing as swiftly as a thief in the night. As it turned out to

be, that day was inevitable, the explosion being the result

of faulty equipment, a disaster waiting to happen.

Well, it’s not difficult remembering one of the worst

days of my life to date. However, some of the little details

from twenty years ago that were once so vivid are now

blurred clouds of thought. But what details I can recall hold

what is now my Bible, my truth. Alright then, so, here’s how

it all began...

I was a masterpiece. An incredible talent. Everyone

said so, and I believed it too. Singing was my calling, my gift,

my future, and the future looked bright at the time. Record

deals, job offers, agents flocking to me, everything seemed

to be going my way. This time in my life was simple enough.

I was a prodigy, a gift, I was lucky as a pot of gold!

Sadly, I was also the cockiest disaster ever made at the

time, but there’s no need to bore you with those details.

That part of my life is easy enough to understand, so let’s

jump to the day it all happened...

It was a Wednesday, July, 1994 I believe. Summer was

here, and the quilt of warmth that the sun beat down on

the Earth made it hard to ignore. Like I said, some details I

cannot recall, but I can still remember the smell of daisies

that wafted through the air that day.
