2008 Texas Bowl2008 Texas BowlReliant Stadium The city of Houston has always been on the cutting edge of stadium development.Houston first introduced the Astrodome, which opened in 1965 as the world’s first dome stadium. The trend continued in 2002 with the debut of Reliant Stadium. Reliant Stadium, the first NFL stadium with a retractable roof, opened for business on Aug. 24, 2002, as the Texans hosted the Miami Dolphins in their first home preseason game. Counting preseason contests, the Tex-ans have played to 60 consecutive sellouts and set a team record in 2004 with 565,192 fans during the regular season, an average of 70,649 per game. The Texans’ largest crowd to date was 70,780 against New Or-leans in 2007, the largest non-Super Bowl crowd in the city’s history. And speaking of the Super Bowl, the world’s biggest sports spectacle returned to Houston for the first time in 30 years in 2004 as Reliant Stadium hosted a memorable Su-per Bowl XXXVIII between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers. The Patriots won 32-29 on Adam Vinatieri’s 41-yard field goal with four seconds remaining before a rau-cous crowd of 71,525. The event also featured elabo-rate pregame and halftime shows featuring the likes of Aerosmith, Beyoncé, Kid Rock, P. Diddy, Nelly, Toby Keith and Willie Nelson. Reliant Stadium also has played host to the annual Texas Bowl, the 2002 and 2005 Big 12 Championship Games and the 2007 East/West Shrine All-Star Game. The stadium also has become one of the nation’s leading soccer venues. The five largest crowds in Texas soccer history have all been played in Reliant Stadium including the 2006 FC Barcelona U.S. tour, the 2003 and 2008 United States vs. Mexico matches and the 2005 and 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cups. The Houston Livestock Show & Ro-deo continued to play to a packed house in 2008 and has boasted such acts as ZZ Top, George Strait, Clay Walker, Brooks & Dunn and Hannah Montana. Ground broke on Reliant Stadium on March 9, 2000. The stadium, covering 1.9 million square feet, features 44,000 seats on the sideline. There are 8,200 club seats and 187 suites. The suites are the closest to the field in the NFL. With the innovation of the retractable roof, Houston returned to outdoor NFL ac-tion in 2002 for the first time since Super Bowl VIII at Rice Stadium in 1974. The roof is made of translucent, Teflon-coated fiber-

glass fabric, and takes 10 minutes to open and close. When it opens, the roof splits at the 50-yard line and docks in the end zones. The roof can withstand winds as strong as 140 miles per hour when closed and se-cured. The climate-controlled stadium also features a natural grass-playing surface. The grass is grown on eight-foot square trays then transported to the stadium. Reliant Stadium features an open view of the playing field from the main concourse and on the club level. The main concourse is 40-feet wide, which makes it the largest in the NFL. Each concession stand has mul-tiple televisions enabling Texans fans to stay on top of the action.

Reliant Stadium also can boast a larger than life scoreboard. Following the trend that was started with the Astrodome scoreboard,Reliant Stadium houses two of the largest inthe league. Both include out of town scores, down and distance, the game clock and a host of other traits. The video boards are among the largest in the NFL. The Texans’ front office is located on the south end of the stadium, enabling the club’s day-today operations to be under one roof. Players report to the stadium to take part in film sessions, practice, treatment and training. The 10,000-square-foot weight room is the largest in the league. The stadium’s press box is located on the eighth level of the stadium’s west side, flanking Kirby Drive. Across the street, the Methodist Train-ing Center features three grass practice fields. One field is lit for night sessions dur-ing training camp. The Texans also have an indoor practice field outfitted with Field Turf. The air-supported structure offers the team a seamless transition from outdoor to indoor practice in case of inclement weather. The state-of-the art facility also doubles as the team’s training camp headquarters.

In his first two seasons at Rice, David Bailiff has established a foundation for suc-cess that has already seen the Owls achieve a level of success that the program has not enjoyed for over 50 years. In 2008, the Owls endured a series of challenges as well as the aftermath of Hurri-cane Ike and produced the first nine-win sea-son for Rice since the 1953 season saw the Owls finish the year 9-2 after a memorable win over Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. Bailiff leads Rice into the Texas Bowl, looking for a 10th win for only the second time in school history. He brings a confident and unified team to Reliant Stadium, one whose season is the result of a unified approach that was forged in the early morning summer workouts, led by a passionate group of se-nior leaders who took up their coach’s chal-lenge to them at the end of the 2007 season that this year’s team was theirs’ to mold. The results of their combined effort were readily apparent from the first whistle of the 2008 season. Opening with a 56-point outburst against SMU on national TV in late August, Chase Clement and his band of receivers piled up points at a record pace. Clement and Jarett Dillard went on to become the most produc-tive passing duo in NCAA history, while Dillard broke the NCAA career mark for touchdown passes. Clement shattered the conference career marks for touchdown passes and total touchdowns, while James Casey, the multi-talented former pro baseball player, broke the C-USA record with 104 catches. At the same time, the Owls defense, bolstered by the fruits of Bailiff’s first two recruiting classes, was able to improve with each game and produced some stout efforts during a six-game winning streak to end the year. Bailif came to Rice after three seasons

as the head coach at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where he posted a 21-15 record while leading the Bobcats to their first Southland Conference championship and the semifinals of the NCAA Division 1AA playoffs in 2005. In his last two seasons at Texas State, Bailiff produced standouts both on the field and in the classroom. He produced both the Southland Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in 2005 (Barrick Nealy and Fred Evans) and the league’s Student Athlete of the Year for football in 2006 (Walter Mus-grove). Overall, he produced a total of 14 All Southland Conference first team selections, and 13 players who were named to the aca-demic all conference squad in his last two years. The 2005 season was truly a magical one. The Bobcats went 9-2 during the regular season and earned the school’s first berth in the Division I-AA playoffs. Bailiff was named the American Foot-ball Coaches Association’s Region 5 Coach of the Year and finished third in the voting for the Eddie Robinson Award presented annu-ally to the top coach in Division I-AA. Prior to being named Texas State head coach, Bailiff spent three seasons on the staff at TCU. He served as the Horned Frogs’ defensive coordinator in both 2002 and 2003 while working with the team’s defensive line-man. The 2003 Horned Frogs posted an 11-2 record and were ranked 25th in the final As-sociated Press writers poll and 24th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Bailiff was part of a staff which built quite a tradition on defense at TCU. During his three seasons in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs were ranked 24th, 1st and 38th in the country in total defense and 10th, first and ninth against the run.

Remembering Jim Castañeda ... All Rice intercollegiate teams are wearing a “JC” patch or logo on their uniforms this year in memory of Dr. Jim Castañeda, who passed away in early November. Castañeda had been the Faculty Representative for Rice University for 33 years and was a member of the school faculty since 1961 teaching Spanish. He also served as an assistant baseball coach from 1963-83, and then the head golf coach from 1983-98. Castañeda was widely recognized as being a driving force in much of the legislation now in place at the NCAA to promote stronger academics and protect the “student” in “student-athlete.”
