It all started off a bit like this…….. “Further to our phone call---I forgot to clarify the Midway Point NC and Pittwater name issue!!” corrected Suzi Edwards from the Centre. “Our registered name is the Midway Point Neighbourhood Centre trading as Pittwater Community Centre-----so the community knows us as Pittwater Community Centre.” Apparently the Centre had won a $1000 grant from Southern Water, and Suzi clarified that is indeed true. “The grant is for upgrading the kitchen at the Community Centre, and timely too. Hundreds of people attend the Centre for breakfast, BBQ’s and the fortnightly Eating with Friends Program.”But the big news is that the Centre has won a $140,000 grant to deliver ‘free to the community’ Computer Tutoring, in class groups or one to one, as part of the NBN grants program.“Midway Point as one of the three trial NBN projects was targeted to deliver programs that would increase the uptake of the broadband network,”

says Suzi. “We have been delivering basic computer training for years, and the project seemed a good opportunity to employ our committed volunteers into a really useful project for the community.” Suzi is especially excited about Martin Holloway’s role in the program for the next two years, “Martin (pictured below) has been our volunteer computer instructor for 8 years, and it will be great to see him rewarded for all that dedication in taking on the main tutoring role.”If you are interested in learning more, or booking into a program, visit the Centre’s website www.pittwatercommunitycentre.org or phone from mid February on 6265 1155.

St Georges Fair coming soonThe district Fair and Festival is on this Saturday 4th February 2012 in St George’s Square with organisers happy with the interest from market and produce stalls for what is planned to be the first annual event to held in February each year.Fair Chairman, Kerry Bowerman from St Georges Church says that there will be plenty to enjoy for the day. “We have an entertainment program led by Michelle Pears of Makebelieve Entertainment fame, supplemented by our Sorell Sings Choir, children’s rides and “the Worm” obstacle course, a first for southern Tasmania.“The variety of stalls for a leisurely browse is certain to please, with everything from the Scissor Sharpener through to crafted items such as jewelry, sewing, clothing, gem stones and candles. There will also be anarray of books, produce, greeting cards and even crocheted rugs.”Other activities on the day include

Devonshire teas, Men’s Shed Sausage sizzle, local emergency service groups, boot sale area, Teddy Bears Picnic, silent auction and an all day program of crafts for children.“Now all we need is the public,” invited Kerry. “All funds raised from the fair will go to support our local youth programs.”The fair will run from 10am through to 3pm, for further details contact Isabella on 6269 2803.

Arts in the South

Southern Beaches Regional Arts (SBRArt) is a local organisation totally focused on creating opportunities for people who live here to collaborate on art and to provide shows and events that celebrate the arts.Chris Cowles, president of SBRArt, summarised up some of the activities which the organisation had brought to our community. “Over the past year we contributed to the 2011 and 2012 Australia Day activities, we brought various exhibitions and performers in and provided a setting for those into the arts to meet, collaborate and learn together.” He continued “We also hold workshops, for example, in life drawing and En Plein Air painting.“We have a dynamic mix of members varying from professionals who earn their living from the arts, amateurs who are learning their artistic pursuits, through to those that are just plain interested in what the arts world can bring to their community.” Membership to the organisation is as little as $23 per year and links members together via newsletters and member events. T-Shop grand openingAt the official opening of Sorell’s newest shop Sorell Mayor, Carmel Torenius, complimented owners Steve Lance and John Clements on their confidence in bring T-Shop facilities to our community. The shop employs 7 locals whose main role is to de-mystify what’s on offer in telecommunications and ensure their customers get the best deal suited to their needs.Steve Lance is excited about the future for the T-Shop. “We know that one of the main roles will be to explain how the NBN will affect customers. We have the NBN Truck booked for the Peninsular over the next few weeks, and the idea behind that is to ensure that we take the information direct to the public.“The NBN is probably the biggest change that every phone or internet user will see over the immediate future.

At this stage it is just something that is happening, but as the old copper telephone lines are discontinued the NBN will be the only way to connect households unless you are using true wireless facilities. Part of our reason for bringing the T-Shop here is to assist in that transition.”Steve also spoke about the T-Shop’s sponsorship of the Hobart Women’s Chargers basket ball team. “The Chargers will be holding a workshop at Dodges Ferry soon, and that is something we are very pleased to be associated with. With summer now in full swing, Labor member for Lyons, Rebecca White MP, warns, “We’ve had a really good spring, but this means we’re now seeing a lot of grass now drying off, posing a serious fire risk. It’s important to keep the area around your home clear to reduce the risk of fire,”Ms White recently visited the volunteers at the Midway Point fire station (see above photo), who train every Tuesday night. The application which covers just stage 1 of a four stage re-development was originated by Sorell Council with the support of the Sorell Community Sport and Recreation Association. The other three stages cover Youth Zone with BMX track and skating facilities, Amphitheatre, landscaping and gardening, indoor stadiums and courts, meeting rooms, kiosk, and a universal area for passive sports or recreational pursuits.If successful, works should begin on the project by end 2012.

Two hundred entries in two daysWith around 200 entries over the two day Show, Dodges Ferry Riding Club President, Pauline Jeffries, is pretty happy with the outcome. “We ran the two day Show as a celebration of reaching 25 years as a club, and to boot it will probably be the last at our current location in Montague Street, Sorell,” said Pauline. “Funds raised from the Show will go toward costs of relocation to the new site at Orielton.”The Club is excited about the move to the new home on the corner of Penna and Shark Point Road. “We are looking forward to getting through the red tape a s s o c i a t e d with our club house and toilet facilities,”

continued Pauline. “Once that is done we can plan the next 25 years with our 40 strong membership.”The Riding Club enjoys great support from sponsors in its club events. The $200 award for Supreme Ridden Exhibit sponsored by Boxall’s Carpets was won by Rachael Knott riding Cocaine pictured with Bec White MHR. The Club also awarded Trish Bolt Life Membership for her years of service to the Club at the Show.

Okines IT ProgramRoundabout caught up with Okines Community House’s, Nat Siggins recently to talk over the Seeds of Renewal Grant received from the ANZ Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal.At the presentation Chris Sparks from ANZ Regional Commercial Banking said, “We’re pleased to be contributing to regional Australia and we understand the value this kind of support can make to communities like Dodges Ferry.”Nat says that Okines Community House will use their $6,111 for an IT program. “The grant will be used to purchase laptop computers and equipment to offer training to community members. It will also help improve pre employment skills, confidence in using the Internet, and being able

With all the talk about enhanced internet services as a result of the NBN, it is easy to forget that some areas will be a long time catching up with the benefits of the NBN Rollout. However local business LDAntennas, operated father and son team Ken and Tim Sulman (pictured above), has been working on communication solutions for isolated users of wireless services for both Internet and Mobile Phone services. “What we do is manufacture three types of aerials which enhance reception in difficult reception areas. They are custom made considering the particular environment or usage our clients want,” says Ken.“We have a long range direct sight model that looks a bit like a conventional TV aerial, then a model that has been customised for shorter distances where there is a lot of interference from hills and obstructions

between the receiver and the nearest transmission tower, and lastly we have a model that clips to your car or recreational vehicle ensuring you get the best reception possible where ever you travel.”Ken told the story of a Nugent local who engaged LD Antennas to get reliable reception.

Ken who is the Technical Adviser for L D Antennas selected the right antenna, looked around for the right location to install it, and solved a longstanding problem in about two hours. The solution the Yagi Antenna mounted about 20 meters up an Old Gum Tree and 80 meter cable roll out to the house. Art at Waterfront Cafe

Local Park Beach artists, Patricia Turner Smith and daughter Eve Smith (pictured above) will be exhibiting their works at an exhibition titled 'The Painter and The Sea Urchin'.Graduate of Fine Arts in 1965, Patricia paints oils and watercolors’ featuring

the Tasmanian coast showing a definite fascination for the sea. In 2010 Patricia painted overseas in Morocco, U.K, Paris and Provence. She now lives and paints from her studio overlooking Park Beach. Eve creates ocean inspired apparel under the label 'Sea Urchin Design'. As a surfer she is captivated by the ocean and its waves which are a strong feature in her designs. Each design is hand printed onto fabric and then sewn into clothing, cushions and bags. Eve studied Fashion Design in Hobart and has been influenced by her mother who made and sold textiles at Wendy Whitely's boutique in New York.The Exhibition opens on Saturday 11th February at 4.30pm and runs until 19th March at the Dunalley Waterfront Cafe & Gallery.

Pest or GuestThe will be a presentation by author Elizabeth Daley at Shambles Bookshop on Friday, Feb 17 at 6pm on her introduction to Tasmanian insects, entitled ‘Wings’.The book is an amazing collection of just about every insect in Tasmania.
