kTION and ACCESS .13488The Moss Township area covered by this portion of the study
is located approximately 130 kilometers west of the City of
Thunder Bay in the Thunder Bay Mining District. The two mining
claims covered by this report (T.B. 1142404 and 1142405) are
located along the Hermia Lake Road, south of the Hermia Lake Road
between the 7 and 8 kilometer marks, three miles southwest of the
town of Burchell Lake. The mining claims are south west of the
westerly tip of Burchell Lake, one-half mile west of Span Lake
and one mile north of the Wawieg river. At present the two claims
border the Central Crude/Tandem-Storimin and Broad Horizon Moss
Township mining properties.
From Thunder Bay the general area is accessed from highway
11-17 to the Atikokan highway which is highway 11. From highway
11 take Highway 802 which passes by the Hermia Lake Road. The
Hermia Lake Road borders both claims to the north and a winter
bush road provides access to the west boundary of claim 1142405.
An alternate route from the Atikokan highway is to take the Swamp
Lake Road which intersects the Hermia Lake Road at about the ten
kilometer mark. Another less preferable route can be taken
through the Boreal forest access road through Begin and Powell
Townships.
Access by air can be made using a straight portion of highway
802 as a runway and numerous lakes in the area provide access for
float equipped aircraft. Traversing the two mining claims in the
study area on foot is quite easily accomplished as the
topographical relief is moderate.
.OGY
Ahern (1988) partly describes the geology oF the project area
as being composed of a unit of undifferentiated metavolcanics and
metasediments which strike northeastward with acid metavolcanics
[rhyolite and trachyte) south of the first unit. Underlying the
north portion of the study area, undifferentiated metavolcanics
are in contact with metasedimentary rocks. A major fault crosses
this area in a northeasterly direction with a strike roughly
parallel to the Knife Lake Fault. Gold mineralization has been
discovered along this same fault to the south.
Two miles to the south of this property, a past producing
mine known as the Kerry Mine (A.K.A. Moss Mine) recovered 29,948
ounces of gold and 172,375 ounces of silver between 1932 and
1942. Here an auriferous quartz vein and northeast trending
feldspar dike cutting Pre-Kenoran mafic to intermediate
metavolcanics was traced for more than 3,000 feet. (Now traced
over 10,000 feet.) These two claims lay roughly along strike of
the old Moss Mine.
Six miles southwest of the study area, the Lobanor prospect,
at the northern tip of Snodgrass Lake, contains three auriferous
zones which returned economic gold values. The Western shores of
Burchell Lake contain two copper occurrences.
Central Crude and Tandem-Storimin Ltd. are currently drilling
3 km to the south of the proposed study area. Narrow wedges of
property are being staked where previously missed. Other economic
gold values have recently been discovered in the vicinity of
Burchell Lake.
Mining claims 1142404 and 1142405 where exposed are composed
mainly of rhyolite and associated felsic (clastic) flows. Orange
to pink granite borders the rhyolite flows to the west, north and
south; heavy overburden lies to the east. A flat, low marshlands
area covers the central border between the two claims. Numerous
quartz veins are found in the rhyolite where fractured. On claim
1142405 the quartz veins have a trace of copper mineralization in
the form of a green colored sulphide and at the same location a
rhyolitic clastic flow associated with sericite schist and minor
sulphides hosts gold mineralization.
DONE
The proposed work was performed in the northeastern corner of
Moss Township. A 1988 airborne geophysical survey by H. Ferderber
Geophysics Ltd. had revealed possible bedrock conductors which
warranted further work. VLF-Electromagnetic and Magnetic data
were gathered to delineate the geological structure and locate
economic concentrations of mineralization. According to Ahern
(1988) these surveys outlined conductive geological zones "which
may represent shear zones and/or metallic sulphide deposits
containing gold mineralization."
A systematic program of sampling and assaying was performed
on this claim group in an attempt to further evaluate the
economic potential of the area. Fifty-five rock specimens were
taken from rhyolite and quartz veins in the study area for
analytical work to determine their gold content. Most of the
outcrops encountered in the study area were subjected to
traditional prospecting methods of rock breaking. Approximately
ten percent of the specimens visually inspected with a 16 X power
hand lens were submitted for assay. Assay number coded field tags
were left in place in the field at each sample location for
future reference. Acid tests were used to determine the presence
or absence of carbonates.
Several quartz veins in the area were stripped of overburden
by hand. Traverses made on these two claims covered nearly all of
the land area bounded by them.
At the location of the highest gold values (329 ppb)(758 ppb)
overburden was stripped by hand with a shovel. 5 orf pffb'

:SULTS and RECOMMENDATIONS
From the traverses made throughout the two mining claims
several previously overlooked quartz veins were Found. One such
quartz vein, bordering the two mining claims, is 14 centimeters
in width and assayed 163 ppb Gold. The gold mineralization in the
sample appears to be associated with the deposition of massive
sulphides along one contact of the vein. The zone oF massive
sulphides is however quite narrow.
The Felsic clastic rhyolitic Flow which produced the higher758 ppb^
gold values of i 329 ppb jAu had numerous elevated gold values Found
in the rook surrounding it. This location was Further explored by
stripping with a high pressure water pump in an attempt to locate
higher gold values. The presence oF sericite schist and massive
sulphides at this location show a Favorable environment For gold
deposition. A similar outcrop oF the Felsic clastic rhyolitic
Flow was Found one quarter mile to the east, suggesting some
strike length to the Formation.
According to Ahern (1988) "The structural and lithologic
complexity oF the property as indicated by the magnetic data
suggests that the claims are located in a good geologic
environment For gold and/or base metal mineralization. Further
work is warranted on the property especially in the areas oF the
possible bedrock conductors . "
This area shows high potential For mineral deposition and
should be Further investigated. A large scale gold deposit, now
being delineated by drilling, lies immediately to the southeast
oF this area along the same geological units. A program oF Field
lapping should be carried out on the property and a soil
geochemistry program may prove beneficial in locating more zones
of anomalous gold values.
