OMAR KHAYYAM was born at Naishapurin Khorassan in the latter half of our Elev-enth, and died within the First Quarter ofour Twelfth Century. The Slender Storyof his Life is curiously twined about thatof two other very considerable Figures intheir Time and Country: one of whom tellsthe Story of all Three. This was Nizam-ul-hulk, Vizyr to Alp Arslan the Son, andMalik Shah the Grandson, of Toghrul Begthe Tartar, who had wrested Persia fromthe feeble successor of Mahmud the Great,and founded that Selj ukian Dynasty which

"'One of the greatest of the wise menof Khorassa.n was the Imam Mowaffak ofNaishapur, a man highly honoured andreverenced,—may God rejoice his soul; hisillustrious years exceeded eighty-five, andit was the universal belief that every baywho read the Koran or studied the ti'adi-tions in his presence, would assuredly at-tain to honour and happiness. fanatics who had long murmured in ob-scurity, but rose to an evil eminence underthe guidance of his strong and evil will.In A.U. 1090, he seized the castle of Ala-mut, in the province of Rudbar, which liesin the mountainous tract south of the Cas-pian Sea; and it was from this mountainhome he obtained that evil celebrity amongthe Crusaders as the OLD MAN OF THEMOUNTAINS, and spread terror throughthe Mohammedan world; and it is yet dis-puted whether the word Assassin, whichthey left in the language ofi tpodernEurope at their dark.memorial, is derivedfrom the hashish, or opiate of hemp-leaves(the Indian bhang), with which they mad-dened themselves to the sullen pitch oforiental desperation, or from the name of

it, on reading in India this story of Omar'sGrave, was reminded, he says, of Cicero'sAccount of finding Archimedes' Tomb atSyracuse, buried in grass and weeds. Ithink Thorwaldsen desired to have rosesgrow over him; a wish religiously fulfilledfor him to the present day, I believe.However, to return to Omar.

Though the Sultan "shower'd Favoursupon him," Omar's Epicurean Audacityof Thought and Speech caused him to beregarded askance in his own Time andCountry. He is said to have been espe-cially hated and dreaded by the Sufis,whose Practice he ridiculed, and whoseFaith amounts to little more than his own,when stript of the Mysticism and formalrecognition of Islamism under,, which

Omar was too honest of Heartas well as of Head for this. Havingfailed (however mistakenly) of findingany Providence but Destiny, and any

World but This, he set about making themost of it; preferring rather to soothe theSoul through the Senses into Acquiescence"with Things as he saw them, than to per-plex it with vain disquietude after whatthey might be. It has been seen, however,that this Worldly Ambition was not ex-orbitant; and he very likely takes a hu-morous or perverse pleasure in exaltingthe gratification of Sense above that ofthe Intellect, in which he must have s^taken great delight, although it failedto answer the Questions in which he, incommon with all men, was most vitallyinterested.

The original Rubaiyat (as, missingan Arabic Guttural, these Tetrastichs aremore musically called) are independentStanzas, consisting each of four Lines ofequal, though varied, Prosody; sometimesall rhyming, but oftener (as here imitated)the third line a blank. Somewhat as inthe Greek Alcaic, where the penultimateline seems to lift and suspend the Wavethat falls over in the last. As usual withsuch kind of Oriental Verse, the Rubaiyatfollow one another according to Alpha-betic Rhyme---a strange succession ofGrave and Gay. Those here selected arestrung into something of an Eclogue, withperhaps a less than equal proportion ofthe "Drink and make-merry," which (gen-

Von Hammer (according toSprenger's Oriental Catalogue) speaks ofOmar as "a Free-thinker, and a great op-ponent of Sufism;" perhaps because, whileholding much of their Doctrine, he wouldnot pretend to any inconsistent severity ofmorals. Sir W. Ouseley has written a noteto something of the same effect on the fly-leaf of the Bodleian MS. And in twoRubaiyat of Mons. Nicolas' own EditionSuf and Sufi are both disparaginglynamed.

No doubt many of these Quatrains seemunaccountable unless mystically inter-preted; but many more as unaccountableunless literally. Were the Wine spiritual,for instance, how wash the Body with itwhen dead? Why make cups of the dead

And if Hafiz meant quite other-wise by a similar language, he surely mis-calculated when he devoted his Life andGenius to so equivocal a Psalmody as, fromhis Day to this, has been said and sung byany rather ,than Spiritual Worshippers.
