I have always been fascinated with the innovative charm ofour Sabahan people – who wouldimagine making a musical instrumentout of wild-growing bamboo or jackfruitwood to carve a lute (known as the‘gambus’)? That’s why the BambooMusic Festival (p.3) is my top pick forthis month’s Happenings & Highlights.I’ll be making my way to Tamparuli tojoin the residents as they show off theirmusical skill playing instruments madeof bamboo. I have heard the KinabaluBamboo Orchestra perform severaltimes and I must say, listening to ‘BlackMagic Woman’ played on the sompotonis something else! There will be a myriad of activities to witness and enjoyduring the festival as well. Read moreabout it in our Happenings & Highlightssection.

You’ve trailblazed Sabah by road and sailed the seas to view theocean wonders, but have you taken to the skies to take in thesights? With SabahAir Aviation, it’s time to see Sabah from way

up high!

SabahAir Aviation is a well-established heli operator with over 30 years'experience. It has a fleet of five helicopters in Kota Kinabalu and one inSandakan. With their affordable rates, the company aims to change theperception that heli charters are for the rich and famous. Think again! Here are some of flights of fancy you might enjoy:

MOUNT KINABALU AERIAL FANTASYImagine a close-up view of majestic Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak

in Southeast Asia. This flight takes you on an unforgettable journey overthe mighty Mt. Kinabalu where you will enjoy stunning views of the seem-ingly endless Crocker Range.

MALIAU BASIN (SABAH’S LOSTWORLD)

Maliau Basin, also known as the ‘Lost World of Sabah’, is located in thesouth-central part of the state. It is an area of approximately 58,840

hectares, surrounded on all sides by steep cliffs, which is rich is flora andfauna. Many people flock to this natural wonder to view the 7-tier water-fall.

KOTA KINABALU AERIAL DELIGHTAvoid the hassle of traffic jams and save precious time as you fly above

the city of Kota Kinabalu! Get a bird’s eye view of Tunku Abdul RahmanPark, the iconic Menara Tun Mustapha (Tun Mustapha Tower, alsoknown as the Sabah Foundation building). See if you can spot your hotelor the famous Tanjung Aru Beach! A 20-minute joyride will cost aroundRM260 per person.

SabahAir Aviation also caters to special requests, transfers and tours.Just ask and you shall receive! In short, you can charter a flight from anypoint as long as there is a landing area the size of a tennis court. TheBell Jet Ranger 206 can seat up to four people, while the Long Rangercan seat six. To save time, dive enthusiasts and island hoppers canrequest to fly to any of the many islands along the east coast. Golferscan also enjoy this service so they can spend more time on theirfavourite golf course rather than in a car. How about flying to Kudat tosee the Tip of Borneo? The journey to Kudat by road from KK city cantake 3 hours whereas it takes only 40 minutes by helicopter. Larger air-craft such as the Nomad (which can seat up to 10 people) are used for

flights to Layang-Layang (an 80-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu).

Some interesting requests include a marriage proposal in which thegentleman had ‘carved’ his proposal on a sandy beach and asked the helicarrying his girlfriend to fly over the designated area. She accepted hissandy proposal with a resounding 'yes'. For SabahAir Aviation, norequest is too grand!

But it’s not all play for Sabahair Aviation. Their busy schedule includesvarious government projects, such as assisting in the building of schoolsin the interior regions of Sabah. They transport building materials usingtheir helicopters; this has a low impact on the environment as trees arenot chopped down to build roads to ferry material to the desired location.

The company is currently upgrading its services to include an interac-tive website where you can book all tours online and have them con-firmed immediately without any hassle.

For more information on the tours and charters offered please con-tact Tova Waage at 088-484 733/484326 or fax 088-484557. You canalso write them at SabahAir Aviation Sdn Bhd, Locked Bag 113,88999, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

It was not the first time Clement Lee made theheadlines, only this time, it made the whole ofAsia sit up and pay attention. In October,

Clement became the first Asian to be awardedthe DEMA (Diving Equipment and MarketingAssociation) Reaching Out Award – a prestigious recognition given to outstandingindividuals for their contribution to the globaldiving industry. Sabah’s own Clement joins theranks of notable figures including John Cronin, the founder of PADI, Stan Waterman, the co-director of underwater photography and secondunit in the production of the motion picture ‘TheDeep’ and winner of 5 Emmy awards andClement’s personal inspiration, Jacques-YvesCosteau who was the first ever recipient of thisaward. The ceremony this year took place inLas Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Sabahans and Malaysians alike are trulyproud of his achievement but what does it meanto the man himself? “To me, it is most significantthat they give recognition to someone fromAsia. I am proud, honoured and humbled to berecognized internationally.”

Clement is undoubtedly one of the mostinfluential forces in the diving’s growth not onlyin Sabah (he established Borneo Divers and isknown for putting Sipadan Island on the map)but also throughout South-East Asia. His lovefor scuba diving blossomed during his teenageyears and in 1983 he became a certified diver.Needless to say, it was a move that changedthe face of scuba diving in Sabah forever.

Having established Borneo Divers and hiswork on promoting Sipadan island as one of theworld’s top diving sites are commendableachievements, but what sets him apart is his

unwavering passion for the environment. “Ihave two basic principles: Conserving the environment and ensuring the dive industry isalways handled by professionally trained andqualified people.” And his contributions haveindeed reflected this through dozens of his environmental efforts and programs such asMabul Marine Day and Project AWARE, whichincorporate clean-up activities of both thebeach and the reef. The environment is andalways will be the key element, says Clement.“Without our environment, there will be no diving industry. The environment is our silentpartner and although ‘they’ don’t speak, ‘they’fight back. And when ‘they’ fight back, there isalways a huge price to pay,” he says. It is uponthese principles that Borneo Divers voluntarily

vacated Sipadan Island years ago. “We leftwithout compensation, which is fine with me butwe did it in the name of preserving theenvironment. And 4 years after vacating, I am

glad to say that you can see more marine lifecoming back – more turtles, sharks, jackfish, barracudas and much more. And interestingly, there is a good regeneration of the coral reef. Allthis is good news for our environment,” he says, adding that many other marine life experts andphotojournalists share his sentiment.

As proud as he is of the thriving dive industry in Sabah, there are challenges thatneed to be addressed. Among them, Clementbelieves, is the unfair tagging of Sabah in travel advisories. “I recently had a group ofAmericans diving in Mabul with me as part of afamiliarization trip. And they asked me one day,‘Why is Sabah mentioned in travel advisories?’Upon which I shot back the question ‘Do youfeel safe here during your trip?’ And theyreplied, ‘Oh definitely! And your people are sowarm and friendly.’ So I said, ‘There you go, youjust answered your own question,’” he recounts.Clement admits that global events such as 9/11and the Bali Bombings will undoubtedly have aneffect on our travel industry but instead of givingin to these adversities, this is when the industryneeds to step up even more to market and promote the destination. “And this is where Ican say I am very proud of the Sabah TourismBoard for cushioning the shortcomings andpush back of the industry during trying times. Itis this kind of concerted efforts that help theindustry as a whole,” he comments. He alsostresses on the importance of continuously producing professionally qualified and trainedpeople in the diving industry. “We are workingon a program for Form Five leavers to join training courses, hoping to instill an interest indiving and in turn, create more dive professionals, especially among our local people,” he adds.

Clement ends with words of praise forSabah as a prime diving destination. “I havebeen to so many dive spots in the world, including Thailand, Maldives, the CaymanIslands but I have to say none of them can compare to what we have here. Indeed, peoplesay you can see the same things in otherplaces: turtles, barracudas etc. But I tell you, nowhere else in the world can you find all thesemarine life in one island (Sipadan), all withinmetres of each other. That is the beauty ofSipadan,” he tells. But Sabah’s unrivalled treasure? “Our people. No where else can youfind the warmth, charm and hospitality of theSabahan people. This is one asset that no onecan ever take away from us.”
