Lauri Van Houten and Mario Giacometti are the husband and wifeteam heading the Federation of Sports at Altitude, the internationalassociation who are responsible for the organisation of sports

events held at an altitude, like the TM 22nd Mt Kinabalu InternationalClimbathon held here in August this year.

This year the pair was back in Sabah for the second time, spendinga little more time to enjoy the sights on the East Coast of Sabah. InLauri’s opinion, Sabah has many charms that will appeal to Europeans.“This place is fabulous! The warm climates and the enormous amount offlora and fauna is rare and different to what we usually have in Europe, and I think many people will want to come here to enjoy those merits,”she said.

The warm weather and lush vegetation is not the only thing that Laurifinds impressive. Mount Kinabalu certainly stands out as a spectacularvenue for the race. “To see a huge granite rock sticking out of the greenis fantastic, the contrast makes an amazing sight,” said Lauri. Whenasked what makes Mount Kinabalu a unique venue, she replies, “Theterrain here is short and steep compared to most other venues, whichpresents runners with different kinds of vegetation on the way up. That istruly unique experience for the mountain runners.” Mount Kinabalu isblessed with an amazing variety of flora and fauna that ranges over 4climate zones; from rich lowland dipterocarp forest through the montaneoak, rhododendron, to the coniferous forests, to the alpine meadowplants, and to the stunted bushes of the summit zone.

Lauri is equally amazed with Sabahan hospitality. “The organisationof this event is one of the best in the world and the attention to therunners is very good. They feel very much at home because Malaysiansare so welcoming and friendly.”

Their visit this year will not be their last. Lauri and Mario have hearda lot about the East Coast and are making it a point to come back to visitthose and other parts of Sabah. “We would like to see the East Coast, gosnorkelling, dive and see turtles and of course visit the Orang Utan sanc-tuary.” That’s not all either; they hope to bring more Europeans to theLand Below the Wind. “We hope to promote this and other new sportsevents which we hope to have here on our website and couple it withattractive tourist packages. Sabah has a lot to offer and we want theathletes to stay a while more to enjoy Sabah with their friends andfamily.

“We look forward to coming back. Soon,” concluded Lauri with a smile.

Serving up Chinese and Thai cuisine in 1Borneo, Sabah’s first hypermall, is noneother than JAWS Seafood Restaurant. From appetizers to desserts, their menu ismade up of both Chinese and Thai delights, including a few local favourites like

satay. Start with one of their soups like the tasty sweet corn with crabmeat soup, aclassic Chinese soup made with a seafood twist. Their menu is easy to navigate, justselect your choice of vegetable, noodles, meat or seafood, then consider how you wouldlike it cooked. Their crab dishes, for instance, offers a choice of soft shell crabs, live crabsand live flower crabs; then there are options of how they could prepare it for you: in thetraditional black pepper sauce, spicy chilli style or stir fried ‘kam hiong’ style for thatgolden colour and flavoursome taste. Almost every other item in their menu comes with achoice of how you would like your food prepared, even their tofu. As for Thai food options,we recommend the delicious, fresh and light lettuce wrap. Select a piece of iceberg let-tuce as your wrap and add just a little bit of everything from the platter: diced fried fish, cashew nuts, coriander, chopped garlic, red onion and fresh ginger and chopped chilliesfor that extra zing plus their sweet and tangy plum sauce. Roll, wrap and take a bite intoa fantastic burst of flavours! For enquiries and reservations, call Jaws Seafood Restaurant at 088 488061 /488062. JawsSeafood RestaurantSporting a new interior design and concept,

Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa’s Italianrestaurant, Peppino, is serving up rustic and

delicious Italian home-cooking. A recent renovation hasturned Peppino into a contemporary chic restaurant; theinteriors are decorated with textures and warm, earthlycolours of olive green, gunny sack brown, natural woodand black glass for that comfortable, classy diningatmosphere. With the largest wine collection in Sabahdisplayed in chilled wine cabinets, the restaurant has aspacious dining area that can sit 64 guests indoors and44 guests on the patio. Their menu changes everyweek, each time offering a fresh and simple array ofItalian home-cooked food. We enjoyed the carpaccio ditonno or fresh tuna loin for starters and the ovenroasted lamb rack served with mashed potatoes. Wecouldn’t leave without a serving of pasta and finishedevery bit of our gnocchi (home made potato dumpling)sauteed in a creamy four-cheese and pine nut sauce. Allthat, a glass of good wine and good company certainlymade our dining experience a memorable affair!

BasketsBaskets woven with tree bark, rattan and bamboo are still used by thenatives everyday. They use the baskets to carry harvest such as fruits, paddy and other crops, as well as any tools that they need to take withthem when they go out to work in a field or the jungles. Today techniquesused for making woven baskets have been used to make contemporaryproducts such as stationery holders, trays and decorative pieces for thehome. Seen here is the carrier called “wakid“, a basket made by theDusun/Kadazan people who live at the foot of Mount Kinabalu. The backcarrier is cylindrical at the base and has a flared-out top. The body is madefrom pieces of carefully split bamboo that tightly fit at an elongated base.A pair of shoulder straps made either of woven split rattan or bark clothcomplete the form and function of this basket.

BeadsBeaded products made by the Rungus people from Kudat areespecially known for their burst of colours and intricate designs.According to tradition, the patterns on the beads knit together rep-resent special meanings and tell a story. Most Rungus beadedproducts are worn as a part of the Rungus traditional costume, asa loose band of beads worn crossed over the chest and back.Current pieces also function as deco pieces for the home and usedas wall hangings. The beaded necklaces seen here are known as“pinakol”.

HandicraftEven with today’s designer innovations, traditional handicraft hasalways been a part of the lives of Sabah’s peoples. From functionalobjects to decorative accessories, the various handicraft madethroughout Sabah reflect the culture that they come from.

Page 13: Sabah Malaysian Borneo Buletin October 2008

GaloreFabricsFabrics with elaborate patterns and designs like the “tinohian” woven by theRungus women of Kudat and the “kain dastar” made by the Bajau take monthsto complete and are consequently some of the most expensive traditional craftsthere is to purchase. The “tinohian” is a heavily embroidered piece while the“kain dastar” is woven with great concentration to detail but they are both similar in that they are both worn on the hear by the men of their respectivemakers. There are many more traditional textiles made by the Rungus, theBajau as well as the other cultures around the state, each strongly expressing

a different ethnicity.

Musical InstrumentsLeopold Stokowski once said, “A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicianspaint their pictures on silence.” The natives of Sabah too painted the silence withmusical instruments of their own, crafting them out of bamboo, wood and animalskins. The “sompoton” seen here is a traditional Kadazan music instrument madeby the Dusun tribes in Sabah. The “sompoton” is made of a double raft of eight bam-boo pipes inserted into a dried gourd. They also made other wind, stringed and per-cussion instruments, including the gong, which is used widely today in any tradi-tional musical performances.

Other TraditionalCrafts and Where toGet ThemThere is an almost inexhaustible amount of crafts made by the local folk, like the tight-woven “rinago” baskets made by the Rungus of Kudat, the“tudung duang” made by the Bajau and various woven hats made by various ethnic groups of Sabah. The are also traditional tools like the “parang”and larger constructions like the “lepa-lepa” boats from the East-coast Bajau. All these and other crafts can be found at a “tamu”, the traditional open-air market found in various locations throughout the State. Visit the especially grand tamu that will be held in Kota Belud this month for that perfectopportunity to scout for some of Sabah’s traditional handicrafts. Refer to page 5 for details to the Tamu Besar Kota Belud. Check out page 25 for thelocations and days that these “tamu” operate. Alternatively, these crafts are also available from the reasonable priced Kadaiku boutique in KotaKinabalu, which sells high-quality traditional goods sourced through the local communities. Kadaiku is located at Lot 5, Ground floor, Block L ofSinsuran Complex.

The Bajau are the second largest ethnic group in Sabah, making upabout 15% of the population. History has it that they originate from the

Southern Phillipines and fled to peaceful lands nearby, includingSulawesi and Kalimantan in Indonesia, when conflicts rose in the SuluArchipelago. The two main Bajau groups in Sabah are both well-knownfor their vibrance, thanks to their customs and traditions. On the westcoast, the Bajau men reside mostly in the district of Kota Belud and areknown as the Cowboys of the East for their outstanding horsemanship,

which can be witnessed at the grand annual open air market, the TamuBesar Kota Belud. They come out fully dressed in their colourful tradi-tional costumes and you cannot miss the equally dressed ponies thatthey ride in on. On the east coast of Sabah, the Bajau inhabit the regionof Semporna where they have long established the reputation of seafar-ers who used to live almost all of their lives at sea on houseboats calledlepa-lepa. Right here in Sabah is the Danum Valley Conservation Area, one ofthe largest, best protected and most important areas reserved forconservation, research, education and training in the whole

of South East Asia. The entire area of 438 square kilometres saw nohuman settlements, hunting, logging nor any other human interferenceprior to its current status. Allowing scientists and a limited number of visitors to the area to reveals much about the natural treasure and is anassurance that the valley should remain protected in the future.

The lush lowland dipterocarp forest holds over 200 species of trees perhectare, some of which are the oldest and tallest on the planet. Whilelogging and other forest clearing activities invaded many parts of Sabah, the Sabah Foundation voluntarily retained Danum Valley as a conservation area in 1980, after discovering that an abundant amount offlora and fauna populated the area. The forest is a haven for OrangUtans, Borneo Pygmy elephants, Malayan Sunbears, clouded leopards, bearded pigs, a couple of hundred of species of birds and the critically-endangered Sumatran rhino to name a few.

Needless to say, nature-lovers will be eager to experience the junglesof Danum Valley. You will no doubt enjoy trekking through highly diverserainforest rich in wildlife. Take a hike to Tembaling Waterfalls, just an houror two away from the Field Centre or head to Purut Falls about 4 hoursaway and admire the seven tiered pools carved perfectly there. Wanderon further to conquer Danum’s higher peak at 1093m which can take 4hours for hardcore trekkers or 3 days for novices. Be warned that on your

journey you will meet Danum Valley’s notorious blood-sucking leeches, but be certain it is all part of the Danum Valley experience!

There are also myths and legends within the conservation area. Threeburial caves belonging to the Orang Sungai (river people) of Borneohave been discovered within the vicinity. But before you decide to wander off on yourself in search of Danum’s treasures, be sure to hire aguide from the Danum Valley Field Centre to avoid getting lost.

How to get there - The town of Lahad Datu, gateway to Danum Valley,is reached via a short 55-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu or overlandfrom Tawau or Sandakan. Then there is a 3-hour drive from Lahad Datuon a sometimes rough and bumpy road to the Danum Valley FieldCentre. Arrange your trip to the Danum Valley Conservation Area with alicensed tour operator.

Where to stay - The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a simple and rusticinternational-standard lodge built beside the Danum River. The lodgeaccommodates a maximum of 60 people for a true jungle experience. While at the lodge you can sign up for lodge activities such as junglewalks, bird watching with resident nature guides, canopy walkways highabove the jungle floor that allow the viewing of the rainforest from thetreetops as well as thrilling night safaris.
