FROM THE PASTOR CATHOLIC SCHOOL LEGACY —As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week this week, I am grateful for the gift of Catholic schools in our church and in our coun-try. Catholic schools have offered formation to genera-tions of young Catholics some of whom have become leaders in our Church and society. Please take some time this week to say a prayer of thanksgiving for Catholic schools, and if you attended a Catholic school, give thanks for those who made it possible for you to attend. We are also extremely thankful as a parish for our parish school, and the many students, teachers, families, and parishioners who have been a part of Sacred Heart School as well as for our current staff and teachers who do such an excellent job of educating our students. Let us continue to work together to build up the King-dom of God here at Sacred Heart.
LITURGY PLANNING FOR LENT AND TRIDUUM
There will be Liturgy Planning for Lent and Triduum on Sunday, January 29, beginning at 1 PM in Conference Room One in the Parish Office. Everyone is welcome to come with their ideas and suggestions, or you can also attend and find out how liturgy is prepared here at Sa-cred Heart Parish.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the an-nual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts Sunday, January 29. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Ser-vice.” This weekend Sacred Heart School students will assist at all the Masses, and David Burroughs, principal of our parish school, will speak. There will be an Open House at our school on Sunday, noon to 1:30 PM—come and visit!
FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
“The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is rooted in eve-ryday life. In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary, and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple to conse-crate him to the Lord. There they met the righteous Sime-on and the prophetess Anna, for whom Temple worship was part of everyday life. God rewarded their fidelity by allowing them to see the one who was Savior and to hold him in their arms. When the ceremony of presentation was completed, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus returned to their hometown. There, they created a home and a family life where Jesus grew up, becoming strong and wise, and the grace of God was upon him. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2, is also called Candlemas Day. According to Luke’s Gospel, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him ‘a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel’ [Luke 2:32]. This sparked the tradition of blessing enough candles to last an entire year. This led to candle processions in churches and in the streets, which became known as ‘Candlemas.’ (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 79) We will bless candles which we will use during liturgy for the coming year at the 9 AM Mass on Thursday, February 2. Anyone can bring candles from home to be blessed as well.
PRAISE AND WORSHIP ON THURSDAY
There will be Praise and Worship on Thursday, February
2, 6:30-7:30 PM in the Church. This a time to gather for
praise music, Scripture, and reflection. Childcare is pro-
vided for young children.
FEAST OF SAINT BLAISE “While serving as bishop of Sebastea, in Armenia, St. Blaise was a visible witness of the Gospel, which eventu-ally led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Dio-cletian. His feast day is commemorated with a blessing of throats because legend says that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. (2017 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 82) We will have the blessing of throats for those who want to have their throats blessed after the 8:45 AM Mass on Fri-day, February 3.
MASS WITH SCHOOL ON FRIDAY Sacred Heart School students and staff will participate in
the 8:45 AM Mass on Friday, February 3; we will cele-
brate Catholic Schools Week at this Mass. Some of the
eighth graders will assist in liturgical ministry.
FUNERAL MASS—BERNADETTE MARTELL There will be a Funeral Mass for Bernadette (Penny) Mar-tell on Saturday, February 4, at 1 PM.

SACRED HEART PARISH SUPPORTS FOR OUR
NEIGHBORS
On Saturday January 14th, The Islamic Center of
Eastside (ICOE), also known as the Bellevue Masjid,
suffered a devastating arson attack that destroyed their
mosque, the first permanent mosque established on the
eastside. The Center has been serving the community
for the past 14 years. Presently, the Center is working
with the city of Bellevue, the Bellevue police, the Bellevue fire department, and other federal agencies to
lay ground work for the reconstruction effort. As a sign
of support and solidarity, Sacred Heart is donating
$3000 towards that effort from our Parish Giving Fund.
We also send our prayers for a healing and a quick re-
covery period. For more information go to:
