SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ January 14, 2018

Dear Parishioners: Among the other developments coming our way in the New Year is the departure of one of our staff people, Erin Gross. Erin has served for almost four years as Director of Faith Formation at SJB (with her focus being on the high school program) and as coordinator of the Confirmation program for both SJB and STA. (She’s also been quite instrumental in organizing and fund-raising for the annual Catholic Hearts Mission Trip for high school-ers from both of our parishes.) Last month, Erin received her Master’s Degree in Psychology from Lakeland University. She has always been “up front” about her post-graduation goal of finding a position in which she could use her hard-earned skillset in psychological counseling to work. (No, despite what some parents and catechists might tell you, teaching high school students about matters of faith re-quires a bit of a background in theology, not psychology, along with a little bit a patience, humility, and a sense of humor.) Erin also needed to find work which would allow her make a dent in the debt load she’s incurred from student loans. (Flash!!! Work-ing for the Church isn’t the best way of doing that.) So, I wasn’t surprised when she announced late last month that she was considering a position in the Milwaukee area. And I was happy for her, but sad for us, that saying “yes” to that job offer means that she’d have to start working there in mid-January. So, as of January 15th, Erin will be working as a case manager and counselor at the Whole Health Group in West Allis. She intends to see our Confirmation program through to it’s end (Confirmation of our high school candidates will be cele-brated by Bishop Jeffrey Haines at SJB on Sunday, February 18th) and will continue to work as a volunteer in our high school faith formation program for the rest of the Semester. (She will also retain her position as President of SJB’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference for the foreseeable future.) So, she’ll still be around for a while. But be sure to congratulate her the next time your paths cross. Shifting gears, I want to apologize to our 4:00 p.m. Mass attendees for the parking lot situation last Saturday. Apparently, the basketball tournament SJB was hosting had scheduled a game for 4:00 p.m.; so the lot was “pre-filled” with parents of children playing in the 3:00 and 4:00 games, not leaving much space for you. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. I’d like to say it won’t happen again, but a similarly structured tournament is already scheduled for this weekend. Without really screwing up the works, the best I could do was shave an hour off the schedule. There will still be a game starting at 3:00 p.m., so parking may be a bit tight again. I apologize in advance. And shifting again, next Sunday, January 21st, at SJB we will be bringing back the Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9:30 a.m. Mass. It will be held in the “Crying Room” in order to eliminate the need to walk the little ones down (and back up) the stairs to/from the meeting room. This change will also allow the catechists to use more productively the time they used to spend “shepherding” the children on their down/upstairs odyssey. Happy 2018!!!

Father Phil
