fifth SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 4, 2018

Dear Parishioners: We had a really interesting (at least from my perspective) joint meeting of the STA and SJB Pastoral Councils, along with our parishes’ business managers (Christine Holzmann and Lisa Schoneman) last Monday to discuss the future design of our Faith Formation program and ministries. (This is the stuff that a couple of generations ago fell under the umbrellas of “C.C.D.” and “C.Y.O.” (and perhaps “Confirmation” if that Sacra-ment wasn’t included under one of the other programs). Nowadays, we look at Faith Formation as pertaining to what we do for: public primary, middle and high school students; the Confirmation program; post-high school/college-age young adults; newly married couples; and even older adults – after all, there’s always something to learn about God and His ways! This meeting was precipitated by the news I’d shared early last month about Erin Gross’s departure from SJB’s full-time position as Director of Faith Formation. The issue we face is not whether Erin should be replaced, but how she should be replaced. SJB and STA have been without a Pastoral Minister since Rose Krueger left last Spring. Both parishes – SJB through its Strategic Plan and STA through its SWOT [Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats] Analysis – have called for significantly enhanced efforts in the areas of Youth/Young Adult Ministry and Family Ministry Faith Formation. The questions about how to proceed came fast and furious: What would this person’s job description look like? Are we looking at one position or two? Full-time or part-time? Where do we look for such a person? What would his/her relation-ship be to our current Faith Formation staff (Lisa Gross at STA, and Amy Albers and Nancy Kultgen at SJB)? What kind of “tweaks” should be made to our existing Faith Formation Program? How much more can our current Faith Formation staff do? What can we afford? At this point, there are certainly more questions than answers! We ended the meeting by having John Mueller (SJB’s Pastoral Council Chairperson) and Matt O’Connor (STA’s Pastoral Council Chairperson) shape three distinct sub-committees (each composed of three of SJB’s nine Council members and two STA’s six Council members): one to explore the K-8 Programs at both parishes; one to examine our high school and Confirmation programs; and the third to look into post-high school, college-age, young adult and newly married Faith Formation possibilities. They’ve got an open mandate to “put some meat on the skeleton” by talking with each other and with parents, parish staff, catechists, students, potential clients, and even people from other parishes about what works and what doesn’t, about needs and wants, about dreams and reality – with the expectation that they return to another joint Pastoral Council meeting early next month with their findings and recommendations. Meanwhile, the trustees and Finance Councils from both parishes will be working together to see what is within the realm of fiscally responsible possibilities for our Faith Formation enterprise(s). It’s all very exciting . . . and a bit scary. So please pray for us!
