SPIRITUAL EXCERPT

"That person is truly blessed who understands what it is to love Jesus and to serve Him with deep humility. Jesus wishes to be loved above all things; everything else must come second. The love of anything other than Jesus is deceptive and fickle; the love of Jesus is faithful and enduring." Thomas A Kempis THE IMITATION OF CHRIST Book 2 Chapter 7

GOING ON VACATION Visit www.masstimes.org for the locations of Catholic Churches and a Mass schedule, throughout the USA

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT If you woke up this morning with more health than illness…you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starva-tion…you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend church without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death…you are more blessed than 3 billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep…you are richer than 75% of the world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace…you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. If your parents are still alive and are still married...you are very lucky, even if you live in the US. If you can read this, you received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you and furthermore, you are more blessed than over 2 billion people in the world who cannot read at all. Some-one once said, “What goes around comes around.” So: Work like you don’t need the money. Love like you’ve never been hurt. Dance like nobody’s watching. Sing like nobody’s listen-ing. Live like it’s Heaven on Earth.

Smile a Little An elderly gent was invited to his old friend’s home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his old buddy pre-ceded every request to his wife with endearing terms- HONEY, MY LOVE, DARLING, SWEETHEART, PUMPKIN, etc. The couple had been married for almost 70 years, and clearly they were still very much in love. While the wife was in the kitchen, the man leaned over and said to his host “I think it’s wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your wife those loving names. The old man hung his head “I have to tell you the truth,” he said, “I forgot her name about 10 years ago.”

CANCER Because cancer is one of the leading causes of death today, here are some common signs and symptoms that may be caused by undetect-ed cancer in its early stages. Although all of these warning signs can have other causes, you should see your physician immediately if you notice any of them. The doctor can examine you and give you the best chance for a cure: A scab, sore, or ulcer that does not heal within 3 weeks. A skin blemish or mole that enlarges, bleeds, or itches. A lump or swelling beneath the skin. Recurrent indigestion or difficulty swal-lowing. Hoarseness that lasts for more then a week. A persistent cough or coughing up blood. Any change in bowel or bladder habits. Blood in the stool or urine.

JOIN A MINISTRY THAT HAS NO MEETINGS Become one of our St John prayer team members. There are no meetings, so this apostolate is wonderful for all, including those parishioners who are homebound. For information, please phone Julie at the rectory.

The Assumption August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption. It is the oldest exclusively Marian feast, and her most important day. It is Mary’s “Easter”. In the Western (Latin) Church it is the only Marian Feast with a vigil Mass; in the Eastern Churches, it is preceded by a two-week Lent-style fast. Although the Church believed in Mary’s Assumption since the 5th century, it was not until 1950 that it was universally declared a dog-ma of the Church. We may never know which came first, the chicken or the egg; perhaps it is not even that important. However, on certain Marian Feasts, like Mary’s Assumption into Heaven, we can easily stray into heresy if we do not know who came first; Mary the Mother or Jesus Christ the Son. The Feast of the Assumption commemorates Mary’s entrance, body and soul, into heaven. An awesome event which was made possible because Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended into heaven! Mary’s assumption into heaven is the result or fruit of her Son’s Death, Resurrection and Ascension. As the Preface on Christ’s Ascension says, “Where Christ has gone, we hope to follow.” SO why should we doubt that Mary, who was born without Original Sin, now enjoys this hope, and is already in heaven? To the Eastern Churches, this feast is called the “Dormition” or “Falling Asleep” of Mary. Since Mary was free from original sin, she did not have to suffer the worst consequence of Original Sin – Death. According to Eastern Tradition, at the end of Mary’s earthly journey, Mary “fell asleep” and was taken body and soul into heaven. (According to the Gospels, Moses and Elijah must have been assumed into heaven, body and soul, since they appeared with Jesus at His Transfiguration.) An ancient legend about St. Thomas the Apostle, a.k.a. Doubt-ing Thomas concerns this feast. According to Scripture, St. Thomas did not believe in the Resurrection until he saw the Risen Lord and probed his hand in Jesus’ nail prints in his hands, feet and side. According to legend, Thomas would not believe that Mary was assumed into heaven until Mary dropped her belt from heaven to prove that she was “up there”. Legends aside, why should WE doubt that Mary is in heaven. This is exactly what Jesus promised to all who fol-low His Way, and trust in God, and place their lives in His Father’s Hands. Mary’s Assumption is important and com-forting to us because it shows what Jesus promised, what Jesus has done for His Mother, and what He will do for each of US – His faithful people.

Why be rebellious in God’s house? People generally have no real problem wearing proper clothing when entering places that demand such attire. Would you ever consider attending a formal dinner or a wedding dressed in a tee shirt and shorts, or a tank top and swimming trunks?

Please dress appropriately when coming to Mass.

RESPECT LIFE Pro-life feminist Frederica Matthewes-Green observes that “in no sane country are women and their own children as-sumed to be mortal enemies; any culture that so assumes is slowly committing suicide.”

PRAYER FOR OUR MILITARY O Prince of peace, we humbly ask Your protection for all our men and women in military service. Give them un-flinching courage to defend with honor, dignity and devo-tion, the rights of all who are imperiled by injustice and evil. Be their rock, their shield, and their stronghold and let them draw their strength from You. For You are God, for ever and ever.

ONE OF GOD’S CHILDREN A seminary professor was vacationing with his wife in Gatlinburg, TN. One morning, they were eating breakfast at a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal. While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a distinguished looking, white-haired man moving from table to table, visiting with the guests. The professor leaned over and whispered to his wife, "I hope he doesn't come over here." But sure enough, the man did come over to their table. "Where are you folks from?" he asked in a friendly voice. "Oklahoma," they answered. "Great to have you here in Tennes-see" the stranger said. "What do you do for a living?" "I teach at a seminary," he replied. "Oh, so you teach preachers how to preach, do you? Well, I've got a really great story for you." And with that, the gen-tleman pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with the couple. The professor groaned and thought to himself, "Great .. just what I need... another preacher story!" The man started, "See that mountain over there? (pointing out the restaurant window). Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother. He had a hard time growing up, be-cause every place he went, he was always asked the same question, ‘Hey boy, Who's your daddy?’ Whether he was at school, in the gro-cery store or drug store, people would ask the same question, ‘Who's your daddy?’” "He would hide at recess and lunchtime from the other students. He would avoid going into stores because that question hurt him so badly. When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his church. He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid hearing the question, ‘Who's your daddy?' But one day, the new preacher said the benediction so fast that he got caught and had to walk out with the crowd. Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher, not knowing anything about him, put his hand on his shoulder and asked, 'Son, who's your daddy?' The whole church got deathly quiet. He could feel every eye in the church looking at him. Now everyone would finally know the answer to the question, ‘Who's your daddy?' “ "This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could give, said the follow-ing to that scared little boy... ‘Wait a minute! I know who you are! I see the family resemblance now, You are a child of God.' " "With that, he patted the boy on his shoulder and said, 'Boy, you've got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.' With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time and walked out the door a changed person. He was never the same again. Whenever anybody asked him, 'Who's your Daddy?' he'd just tell them, 'I'm a Child of God.'" The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said, "Isn't that a great story?" The professor responded that it really was a great story! As the man turned to leave, he said, "You know, if that new preach-er hadn't told me that I was one of God's children, I probably never would have amounted to anything!” And he walked away. The semi-nary professor and his wife were stunned. He called the waitress over and asked her, "Do you know who that man was -- the one who just left that was sitting at our table?" The waitress grinned and said, "Of course. Everybody here knows him. That's Ben Hooper. He's Gover-nor of Tennessee!” Someone in your life today needs a reminder that they're one of God's children! The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of God stands forever. ~~Isaiah

YOU'RE ONE OF GOD'S CHILDREN! HAVE A GREAT DAY!

DID YOU KNOW? That the term “birthday” always refers to the date on which a pious soul was born into everlasting life in the language of the Roman Catholic Church. Only three births in nature are commemorated by the Church as ho-ly: the Nativities’ of Our Lord, Our Lady, and St. John the Baptist, all of whom were born free of Original Sin. (St. John was sanctified in the womb of St. Elizabeth.) Tradi-tionally, in Catholic nations such as Poland, and in Reli-gious Life, natural birthdays were never celebrated. In-stead, a Catholic would celebrate his or her Name Day – the feast day of the person’s patron Saint.

QUESTION? Are Catholics allowed to be members of the Masons? The 1918 Code of Canon Law stated that anyone who joined the Masonic sect would incur automatic excommu-nication. The current 1983 Code of Canon Law does not mention Masons explicitly. It simply forbids Catholics to join organizations which plot against the Church. On Nov. 26, 1983 the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith issued a declaration which stresses that nothing is changed and that the church’s negative position re-mains unaltered and that joining the Masons remains prohibited.

SAINTS OF TODAY AND YESTERDAY BLESSED THOMAS PILCHER Priest and Martyr (c. 1557-1587)

Only a year after earning a master's degree at Oxford Universi-ty, Thomas Pilcher, of Battle, England, resigned from his Ox-ford fellowship to begin seminary studies abroad. Following his March 1583 ordination to the priesthood in Laon, France, he returned to England to serve the country's Catholics persecuted under Queen Elizabeth I. Father William Warford, a contempo-rary of Father Pilcher, said of him, "There was not a priest in the whole west of England who, to my knowledge, was his equal in virtue." After being captured and banished from Eng-land in 1585, Father Pilcher quickly re-entered the country in secret to resume his pastoral labors. His second arrest in March of 1587 led inexorably to a death sentence pronounced against him just two weeks later. He made the most of his time as a prisoner, converting thirty people during this two-week interval. On the day of his execution, Father Pilcher was dragged through the streets so roughly that he momentarily fainted from the ordeal upon reaching the scaffold. He suffered death by drawing and quartering.

PROMISES OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA “Pray the Rosary every day, in order to obtain peace for the world, and the end of the war… If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace…If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace…In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world. In Portugal, the dogma of Faith will always be preserved….He (Jesus) wants to establish in the world, devotion to my Immaculate Heart. I promise salvation to those who embrace it, and these souls will be loved by God, like flowers placed by me to adore His throne…The moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father, in union with all Bishops of the world, to make the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means.”

Words of OUR LADY at Fatima

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS NO LONGER PART OF OUR

PARISH? Or SOMEONE WHO NO LONGER ATTENDS MASS?

If so, begin to pray and think of ways you can invite that person to be a part of our celebration of the 100 anniver-sary of our parish. As we prepare for this celebration, we want to reach out to as many people as possible. Think of young people who may not look to the Church to help them find meaning in their lives. Think of those who may be angry with the Church. Reach out to them, because we want everyone to be a part of this great celebration. Think of those who left and went some where else – invite them back and tell them what is going on here at OLV. We want to reach out to everyone and move together as a human family toward greater unity and reconciliation

How to Know YOU are Growing Old Everything hurts and what doesn’t hurt, doesn’t work. The gleam in your eye is from the sun hitting your bifocals. You feel like the night before, and you haven’t been anywhere. Your knees buckle, but your belt won’t. Your little black book con-tains only names ending in M.D. You get winded playing chess. You look forward to a dull evening. Your children begin to look middle-aged. You join a health club and can’t go. A dripping faucet causes an uncontrollable bladder urge. You sit in a rocking chair and can’t get it going. You turn off the lights for economic reasons. You know all the answers, but nobody asks you the questions. Your back goes out more often than you do. You sink your teeth in a steak, and they stay there. You have too much room in your house, but not enough in the medicine cabinet. The little gray-haired man/woman you helped across the street is your husband/wife .

Hungry “I once picked up a small girl who was wandering the streets, lost. Hunger was written all over her face. Who knows how long it had been since she had eaten anything? I offered her a piece of bread. The little one started eating it, crumb by crumb. I told her, “Eat, eat the bread! Aren’t you hungry?” She looked at me and said, “I am just afraid that when I run out of bread, I’ll still be hungry.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood)

Quotes “Birth control: to create a race of thoroughbreds.” - “More chil-

dren from the fit, less from the unfit. – that is the chief aim of birth control.”

“The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We do not want word to get out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the Minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”

“Those least fit to carry on the human race are increasing most rapidly. Funds that should be used to raise the standard of our civilization are diverted to maintenance of those who should never have been born.”

“It now remains for the U.S. government to set an example to the world by offering a bonus or yearly pension to all those obviously unfit parents who allow themselves to be steri-lized.”

Margaret Sanger, an American, founded Planned Parenthood in the early 1900’s. She believed in eugenics – that is, engineering a superior race, an idea that Adolph Hitler read about and em-braced. For Margaret, the race would be Protestant, white, with Northern European ancestry. Catholics, Blacks, Southern Euro-peans, Indians and Asians were therefore, genetically all inferi-or and should not be allowed to breed.
