us to concentrate more on what we want than on what God wants for us. The relativism of our world tells us that we should be tolerant of all things, that there is no absolute truth. Pray to the Holy Spirit to put the right words in our mouths when challenged about our faith.
MAY CROWNINGS AT SAINT JOSEPH As is our parish custom, there will be three chances to witness the traditional May Crowning of the statue of Mary in our church. TODAY, Sunday, May 15 at the 9:00 am Mass our First Communicants will attend Mass as a group and crown Mary (and then attend their family Communion Breakfast); TOMORROW, Monday, May 16 at 1:00 pm the Saint Joseph School second-graders will lead the procession to crown Mary in the Upper Church, and NEXT Saturday, May 21, after the 8:30 am Mass in Mary’s Chapel, the Legion of Mary will conduct our THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER at which they will pray the Rosary and crown Mary. Everyone is welcome to all!

G. K. Chesterton’s great friend Hilaire Belloc was so close to him that George Bernard Shaw
referred to them as the Chesterbelloc. Both men had many friends and admirers, but they were very different in temperament. Chesterton was greatly loved for his affectionate ways even by his most resolute opponents. Belloc, on the other hand, took no prisoners in his controversial writings. When a bishop of the Church of England who was known for his controversially non-traditional views (Bishop E. W. Barnes of Birmingham) ordered one of his pastors to remove from his church “all illegal Ornaments … and especially a Female Figure with a Child,” Belloc reacted with all the zeal of a medieval knight coming to the defense of his lady whose honor needed defending. He composed the following verses, which he called the “Ballade of Illegal Ornaments”:
When that the Eternal deigned to look On us poor folk to make us free, He chose a Maiden, whom He took From Nazareth in Galilee; Since when the Islands of the Sea, The Field, the City and the Wild Proclaim aloud triumphantly A Female Figure with a Child.
These Mysteries profoundly shook The Reverend Doctor Leigh, D.D., Who therefore stuck into a Nook (or Niche) of his Incumbency An Image filled with majesty To represent the Undefiled, The Universal Mother—She— A Female Figure with a Child.
His Bishop, having read a book Which proved as plain as plain could be That all the Mutts had been mistook Who talked about a Trinity, Wrote off at once to Doctor Leigh In manner very far from mild, And said: “Remove them instantly! A Female Figure with a Child!”
Having discharged his literary artillery at the unfortunate prelate, Belloc concluded his poem with this “Envoi,” looking to the time when he himself would be on his deathbed:
Prince Jesus, in mine Agony, Permit me, broken and defiled, Through blurred and glazing eyes to see A Female Figure with a Child.

A SPECIAL VISITOR FROM THE VATICAN Saint Joseph Parish was greatly blessed this past Tuesday when the Reverend Monsignor Alfred Xuereb celebrated the 8:30 Mass at our church. Monsignor Xuereb has served three Popes: as Honorary Prelate in the Prefecture of the Papal Household with Pope St. John Paul II; as private secretary to Pope Benedict XVI; and now as the first Prelate Secretary of the Secretariat of the Economy, a new department of the Roman Curia formed by Pope Francis.
Monsignor Xuereb was visiting his friend and classmate, Angelo Muscat, and his wife Tina (see above)— parishioners of Saint Joseph. The two men had been classmates in Malta (the island-state south of Sicily) and reconnected at their class’ 40th reunion last year. (Seven members of their 20-student class became priests.)
Monsignor Xuereb was kind enough to pose with Saint Joseph School eighth graders. He told the students, who attended the Mass, just how Pope Francis spends an ordinary day in the Vatican. He shared with them how shocked the Pope was when Vatican staff offered to shine his shoes. The Pope continues to shine his own.

BATTER UP! SAINT JOSEPH SOFTBALL
SEASON BEGINS The Saint Joseph Softball team is seeking a few more team members to join their squads. Both male and
female Saint Joseph parish members who are 15 years old or older are eligible to play. Games are typically played twice a week (one weeknight game—played at 8:00 pm under the lights—and one Sunday afternoon game). No games are played on Father’s Day or July 4th weekends. This is a slow-pitch/high-arc league that plays 7 inning games. It is a league rule that two females must play per inning. It a fun, family-oriented and social experience in a semi-competitive league! Last year, one of Saint Joseph’s teams won the inter-church league championship! A New Devotion to Honor Our Lady
O Most Holy Trinity we adore Thee and we love Thee for Thy
great love and care. Time and again Thou hast saved us, Thou
hast not abandoned us; Thou has prepared the Immaculate Virgin
Mary to be the Mother of Jesus Christ our Lord, who saves us
from eternal damnation. Open our minds to know our sins, open
our hearts to receive Thy Love.
O holy Mary, Mother of Divine Mercy, look kindly upon thy
faithful children who cry to thee in sorrow and pain. O Mother

Food bank in Newark, NJ is in need of volunteers to help the needy (primarily the elderly and young mothers with infants). We distribute food, coffee, and light snacks to the community each week. About this devotion: Saint Joseph parishioner Laura Villena was
inspired by the image on the back of the Miraculous Medal which
shows twelve stars surrounding a large M. She learned that there
was a twelve-star devotion that originated in the 17th and 18th
centuries that paid special attention to Mary as Regina Mundi
(Queen of the World). She knew of the bible passage, “A great sign
appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon
under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”
(Revelations 12: 1b) The devotion above that she created refers to
the graces, privileges and charism received by Our Lady from God.
In April 2015, a priest suggested that she apply for an imprimatur
(permission to print) for the prayer and it was granted by Archbishop
Myers on April 22, 2016.
