STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Get up and eat, else the journey

will be too long for you!” (1 KINGS 19:7) Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be difficult, so He gave us the nourishment of the Eucharist. When we take time to join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength to give and joy in our giving.

BREAD AND WINE INTENTIONS

The bread and wine for the week of August 9, 2015

is offered in thanksgiving as requested by Gail & George Fabiano.

Please remember to drop off or send in your weekly donation envelope. Saint Joseph Parish relies on parishioners’ weekly contributions

to meet our operating expenses. Thank you for being a good steward of our parish.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 9, 2015

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

∎ I hope you will consider volunteering to help make our parish’s effort in the “We Are Living

Stones” campaign a success. This is the drive every parish is partnering with the Archdiocese on. If you don’t know about it already, don’t worry—you’re sure to hear about it. Mark Alleman has generously volunteered to chair our effort, knowing how important it is for Saint Joseph. Tom Kelly and Glenn Nunez have graciously agreed to serve as co-chairmen and work with Mark. We thank them all.

∎ One of God’s greatest gifts to us is Sacred Scripture, through which he has communicated to us the most important of his teachings and inspirations. The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on Divine Revelation has a wonderful description of why the Bible should matter enormously to us.

In the sacred books the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet his children, and talks with them. And such is the force and power of the Word of God that it can serve the Church as her support and vigor, and the children of the Church as strength for their faith, food for the soul, and a pure and lasting found of spiritual life.

If you would like to take part in our parish’s biblical learning sessions, you will have a chance to sign up for them in the coming weeks. Anyone who does will gain

from the opportunity they present and the results they are sure to produce. In his Confessions, St. Augustine has a passage where he says that

In my needy life, Lord, my heart is much exercised under the impact made by the words of your Holy Scripture.

This can be so for any of us.

∎ The Solemnity of Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven is this coming Saturday, and will be celebrated at our normally scheduled 8:30 am Mass. While it is not a holy day of obligation this year (because it occurs on a Saturday), it is one of the Church’s most joyous and important days and beliefs, something the late Pope Paul VI reminded pilgrims about at his 1973 Mass on the feast day:

This is the meaning of the Assumption; the love of God that raised her who believed in Him to eternal glory.

The pope also said that

Many have the desperate certainty that death will be the end of everything. It is false. It is a materialistic, temporal illusion because another life truly exists. There is another life! … It is not a legend, nor myth. It is the truth. God has created us immortal. Every time a baby is born, he is born for eternity.

Msgr. David Hubba

Mary What mystery magnificent what joy without alloy, that God should come to live in me as helpless baby boy.

I hurry to Elizabeth; she too shall bear a son; our hearts are one in praise of God — Redemption has begun!

Back home I learn of gossip while Joseph deals with doubt, but nothing can disturb God’s plan or my sweet rapture rout.

Each day I wake in wonderment to sing God’s awesome grace, and wait in prayerful longing to kiss my baby’s face.

And then one night in Bethlehem with all the world asleep, in a stable small and still did God his promise keep.

Too soon the childhood days fly past when we must be apart, that he may teach and heal and bless yet never leave my heart.

Then comes the tide of agony when godless men prevail, to bind my son in lies of hate with scourge and thorn and nail.

With John I stand beneath the cross, his suffering to mourn, remembering his saving words: “For this I have been born.”

I wait the while he sleeps in death, yet through the dark of pain his promise comes to dry my tears: “I shall rise again.”

And suddenly my son is here resplendent in pure light, and I can hold him in my arms like that first holy night.

An original poem by our parishioner

Marie L. Chiarella
