PASTOR’S NOTEBOOK – AUGUST 31, 2014 – TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“When human affairs are so ordered that there is no recognition of God, there is a belittling of man. That is why, in the final analysis, worship and law cannot be completely separated from each other. God has a right to a response from man, to man himself, and where that right of God totally disappears, the order of law among men is dissolved, because there is no cornerstone to keep the whole structure together.”

- Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Spirit of the Liturgy (2000)

A note from the road...

“Prayers for everyone. We went to an organ concert at the cathedral—awesome! Had Vigil Mass and dinner with the pastor, who is from India. The Church in Germany has many challenges and gives us much to think about. Affluence seems to have really hardened hearts toward God. The Church Tax doesn’t help, but sure keeps churches lovely!”

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Pastoral Year 2014-2015 Donations Received as of August 24, 2014

Donations Received August 24, 2014 Year to Date Sunday Envelopes $26,770 $254,034 Online Giving 13,047 119,346 Sunday Loose Collections 1,452 17,214 Holy Day 7 1,841 Children/Little House 103 627 Total Stewardship of Treasure Donations: $41,378 $393,062 Debt Reduction Collection (Pink Envelope) $273 $4,715 In preparing the parish budget for this Pastoral Year (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015), Fr. Jim accepted the recommendation of the Finance Council and used a portion of our savings to pay down our parish loan. On August 11, we paid $236,039 to bring our loan balance to $245,000. Doing so lowered our interest payments from $50,000 per year to $15,000. All donations received in the pink envelopes are applied directly to our principal.

PARKING LOT UPGRADES

This past week we repainted the safety lines and parking spaces in the upper parking lot. In addition we re-designated the handicap parking space closest to the Clothing Bank as a loading/unloading zone. This was done for operational reasons and to avoid inappropriate parking by service vehicles in a handi-cap space. We added one additional handicap space to the row of spaces that overlook the lower parking lot to maintain the same number of handicap spaces available in the upper lot.

Stewardship

Jesus does not mince words in the Gospel when He says, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” We may not find much comfort in those words, but that is because our focus tends to be on life right here and right now, not the promise of everlasting life offered by the Lord.

The readings on this Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time emphasize much of the chal-lenge we may have in following the Lord and doing what He asks us to. The first reading is from the Prophecy of Jeremiah. One of the longest books of the Old Testament, Jeremiah

recounts warnings by the prophet of the same name to the people of Judah. Anticipating the Babylonian invasion in 586 B.C., Jere-miah warns the people that they must repent and change or they are doomed.

No one likes to be chastised, let alone rebuked. Jeremiah was doing what God had told him to. Yet, he was reviled and hated and eventually killed. In today’s brief reading Jeremiah is pleading with God to help him. He tells God he really does not want to contin-ue because of how he is treated, but at the same time he acknowledges that the word of God “becomes like fire burning in my heart.” In other words, a higher power is within him. That same power is in us if we allow it to be. We need a “burning desire” to live as the Lord wishes us, to pursue discipleship through stewardship.

St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, our second reading, reiterates the challenge of living a good and spiritual life. One of his key warnings to us is “Do not conform yourselves to this age.” We must be willing to live, in modern terms, “outside the box” some-times. When Paul challenges us “to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,” he is not asking us to lay down our lives, although many Christians through the centuries have done exactly that. In the idea of stewardship, we are fond of speaking of giving our time, our talent, and our treasure. However, the Lord wants more than that. He wants us to give of our very selves to serve Him and one another. That is the point which Paul is making. God wants our whole self, not just a small percentage of it.

As is often the case, Jesus takes it all a step further in the Gospel from Matthew. The Lord points out to us that if we really wish to follow Him we must deny ourselves. This is similar to Paul’s command. Stewardship is a God-centered way of living, not a self-centered way. It is one of those ways in which we deny ourselves for the benefit of the Kingdom and for others. The reality of life is that it always ends in death, but Jesus has provided us a way to avoid that. That is what He means when He says “take up your cross and follow me.” Jesus is indeed “the way and the truth and the life,” and no one comes to the Father except through Him.

One of our popular modern questions is “What’s in it for me?” What do I get out of living a life of stewardship? Jesus makes it very clear that He will “repay all according to our conduct.” - Reprinted from www.thecatholicsteward.com

Hospitality Ministers: Greeters and Ushers offer a welcoming presence.

It’s up to every parishioner to welcome the stranger, the newcomer to town, the visitor, the person that has been here week after week but gone unnoticed, as well as those we already know. We offer a smile, a friendly hello, a welcoming gesture or a helping hand. We are the living, breathing Body of Christ when we do this. Each one of us is important in helping us to be the face of God to all who walk through our doors.

There are some among us who do this as a ministry, who are here for their scheduled Mass time to greet, take the collection, and offer assis-tance. We are so much richer for their presence. They are ready for the unexpected, to open windows, direct Communion lines, make sure the infirm are cared for, hand out bulletins, or call for help in case of an emergency. Everyone looks to the usher for help when a problem arises.

Though we have dedicated individuals and families performing in this role, we always have need for more ushers, especially at Christmas and Easter. We also think it is important for someone to be at each entrance before Mass saying hello. Maybe this is your calling! Don’t underesti-mate the power of the greeting. No matter what Mass you go to, there is room for you. To help take the mystery out of this ministry we invite you to a training session September 16 from 6 – 7:15 pm in the Gathering Space and we’ll talk about the importance of welcoming and hospitality. Please let us know you’ll be coming by calling the Parish Office.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you

welcomed me.” - Mt 25:35
