Dear Sandburg Families and Friends, Welcome to the best year ever. You’ve most likely read this or heard this from me a few times already this year, but I want you to know it is more than a catch phrase. It is genuinely my desire that at the end of this school year, we will all be able to look back and truly say, “This was the best year ever.” I also want you to know that I am not defining this with only “feel good” data, although I certainly hope all of us feel great about being part of this learning community. After all, we are Sandburgers. When I refer to the “best year ever”, I am talking about student learning and growth in all areas, not just those that can be measured by our multiple data sources. I am also referring to achieving identified goals, strengthening partnerships, and continuing our resolve to have a school climate that is warm and inviting. Attendance at our 4 th and 5 th grade curriculum night presentations was very good. Thank you so much for supporting your child by meeting his/her new teacher and hearing about what you can expect this year. We are hoping for the same level of participation at our two remaining curriculum nights. Thursday, September 11 th is 2 nd grade and P.A.C.E 3 rd (6:15-7:00 PM), 3 rd grade (7:30-8:15 PM), and Miss Sobotka’s 4 th grade class (7:30-8:15 PM). Tuesday, September 16 th is Kindergarten (6:15-7:00 PM) and 1 st grade (7:30- 8:15 PM). I will also be doing a presentation in the Multi-purpose room from 7:00-7:30 on each of our curriculum nights. The presentation will include important information about the new District 200 Language Arts curriculum and the new standards-based report card for all subject areas. The end of the first trimester is Thursday, November 13 with report card distribution on Thursday, November 20. Parent-teacher conferences will once again be in October on Tuesday, October 14; Thursday, October 16; and Monday, October 20. On September 17, you will all receive detailed information about how to sign up electronically for a parent-teacher conference with your child’s teacher. I can’t even begin to thank you enough for all that you have done so far in helping us get off to such a great start. Your attendance at the PTA Back-to- School Picnic and support of the PTA Fun Run on September 19 remind me of how fortunate we are to be at Sandburg. I am looking forward to working together with all of you to make this year the best year ever. SUPPORT SANDBURG WITH OUR 2014-15 COOK’S NIGHTS

OFF!

This year we will continue our tradition of partnering with local restaurants to

have Sandburg Cook’s Night Off events. During these days/evenings, the

participating restaurant will give the Sandburg PTA a percentage of the amount

spent by Sandburgers at their establishment. Like all money raised by the PTA, it

will be used for field trips, Mr. Lee, Exploremore Day, cultural arts programs,

birthday books and so much more! Last year the PTA received more than $1500

thanks to your support of the Cook’s Night Off program!

ALL PRO DAD GROUP AT SANDBURG SCHOOL

What is All Pro Dad? All Pro Dad is the fatherhood program of Family First, a national non-profit organization based in Tampa, Fla. The mission of Family First is to strengthen the family by establishing family as a top priority in people's lives and by promoting principles for building marriages and raising children. All Pro Dad is also a founding member of the national PTA’s MORE (Men Organized to Raise Engagement) initiative. The national PTA is making a concerted effort to get dads more involved in the lives of their children and in schools. Studies consistently show when a child and his/her father have a healthy relationship, that child is happier, healthier and does much better academically. What is All Pro Dad Monthly Breakfast?* All Pro Dad's Day is a 45 minute monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids at school. At this gathering they discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, have fun and are equipped with resources to strengthen their relationship. Example topics: peer pressure, goal setting, and caring for the less fortunate. Finally, fun is guaranteed at each meeting! What about Children who do not have a Father in Their Lives? Great question! Any man who serves as a role model for a child is welcome to attend. Single mothers and their kids are also welcome. Is There a Cost for All Pro Dad’s Day? No! All Pro Dad provides all the resources needed for the monthly meeting at no charge. *If you have further questions, or would like to assist in planning the monthly breakfasts, please contact Jeff Crowley at 630-651-6535 or email: [email protected]. Finally, the All Pro Dad Sandburg website is: www.allprodad.com/2180.
