For a place you can call home? You are tired, icrhups, of "quarter-sectio- n

farming," even though broad acres of the fairest portions ofUndo Sams' domain yet tempt you to change your base of operationsfurther west. Ten, twenty, thirty or forty acres of Rio Grande valleyland will furnish you an ample and Taried arena for the display of mus-

cular ability, while common sense, taste and a modest capital will inthree or four year3 produce results eminently satisfactory to a man who,to a laudable desire for a reasonable pecuniary return for his labor, car-

Wannamaker recectly summoned toWashington various otfiaials of the tele-

graph companies, in order to lay beforethem some details of and make proposalsfor a new postal telegraph service whichhe has had under consideration for sometime.

Dr. Green, president of the WesternUnion, was ono of these officials, and hasjust returned from the conference. Hegave a reporter some details of tho pro-posed scheme. Dr. Green did not lookupon the project in a very favorable light."It would be a distinctly second class de-

livery service. There would not, be imme-niedia-

delivery by tho post office, butstated times of delivery, as in the case ofletters now."

Business and commercial men, ho be-

lieved, would not avail themselves of suchservice when they can have n Hrst-clas- s

service and messages delivered by thecompany the very moment received. Itis, however, an extension of the telegraphservice that forms tho chief feature ofWanamaker's scheme. There are at pres-ent 59,000 post offices in the counrry.About 19,000 have telegraph service. Dr.Green said of these 19,000 receiving officeswhich the company now has, about two-thir-

are profitless.Dr. Green was very much inclined to

doubt tho financial success of extendingthe lines to 40,000 little places in order tomake a blessing of the telegraph servicefor the people.

Stirring Them Vp.Washington, Sept. C Comr. of Pen-

sions Tanner, in a recent interview inNew York state, remarked in his usualbreezy way about Congressman Flood, ofElmira, who had been criticising him, that if the congressman's brains could beblown through the bill of a snipe into theeye of a mosquito, it would not make themosquito wink.

This little bit of pleasantry Was not ap-preciated by the member from Elmira, who is a republican, and he felt himselfso much aggrieved that he has startedout on a hunt for Tanner's scalp. Heproceeded yesterday to Deer Park to seethe president, jjud interest is given to theaffair by a report that Flood will threatento resign his seat in congress,"leaving hisdistrict to the Democrats, unless Tanneris disciplined for his irreverent remark.

With the small Kepublican majority inthe house, tho possibility of such anevent is alarming enough, but it is possi-ble that Mr. F'lood will care enough forhis reputation as a party man to confinehis efforts for Comr. Tanner's punish-ment to a personal statement of grievonceto the president.

papers about the rapid removal of fourthclass postmasters appear to be very silly.Of course they will be removed, just asthey were removed under Cleveland, forthe simple reason that the village or cross-

roads postmasters constitute a very im-

portant party power. If Republicanshadn't been removed from petty officesunder Cleveland thero would't have beenany removals to be made under Harrison ;

but as the changes were made as fast aspossible under the Democrats, the Re-

publicans are willing imitators. Theremay be a time in the future when civilservice reform will protect faithful andefficient villago and cross-road- s post-

masters, but neither party has got withinsight of that standard as vet, and thesmall postmaster must always go as par-ties change They all do it, and whybother about it?

POINTS OF INTEREST,

There are some forty various points of

more or less historic interest in and aboutthe ancient city :

The Adobe Palace, north, side of theplaza, has been occupied as an executivemansion since 1080,the first governor and

year 1710.The oldest dwelling house in the

United States is located near San Miguelchurch. It was built before tho Spanishconquest.

The ancient cathedral's walls are grad-
