otherwise not seek admission. The scholarship will be for up to 50% of the fees, in accordance with parental means, and will normally continue through to the end of the Sixth Form subject to a satisfactory annual review.

Academic Scholarships

4

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

Benjamin Franklin”5

The scholarship is offered for the two years of Sixth Form study. The scholarship is open to both internal and external candidates.

External Candidates The candidate’s mock examination results will form the basis of the selection process together with:

Candidates will be asked to attend academic examinations and an interview with a panel which may include the Head, Deputy Head, Head of Sixth Form, Director of Studies and/or some Heads of Departments.

There will be a series of examinations consisting of a general intelligence paper, a general essay paper and papers for two of the four AS subject choices. If one of the choices is a Modern Foreign Language, an oral component will be included.

Internal Candidates

The candidate’s mock examination results will form the basis of the selection process together with:

A letter of application from the candidate – to be submitted to the Head by the closing date.

An interview with a panel which may include the Head, Deputy Head, Head of Sixth Form, Director of Studies and/or some Heads of Departments. The interviews will take place the week after the examinations.

Scholarship candidates are expected to achieve at least eight GCSE passes, with Grade A in at least the three A-Level choices. Sixth Form Scholars are expected to make a significant contribution to the life of the school.

Sixth Form Academic Scholarship(for entry into Lower VI - Yr 12 in September 2014)

“The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.

Émile Zola”8

One scholarship is offered at 13+ and one at 16+ at up to 10% of full day or boarding fees, to girls whose work shows genuine promise and an evident interest in the visual arts.

Art Scholarships(for entry into Upper IV - Yr 9 and Lower VI - Yr 12 in September 2014)

An award made at 13+ will continue throughout the Sixth Form if the scholar studies Art for A-Level.

The selection process is as follows:

Initially all candidates will be required to submit a portfolio of work on the Entrance Examination Day.The ‘portfolio’ should contain varied examples both of work produced under guidance as part of the normal creative work programme in school and of pieces which have been done purely for interest in free, undirected time either at school or at home. Any type of work is acceptable (fabrics, pottery, constructions, collage, photography, etc.) but there should be some painting and drawing and pieces should be clearly dated and labelled as guided (G) or undirected (U). There is no prescribed number of pieces but quality rather than quantity is the essence and a maximum of 20 items should be more than adequate to do justice to a candidate.

Candidates successful in the initial selection will then be required to be successful in the school’s entrance examination (external candidates) and attend an interview and sit a practical examination within the Art Department.

It is expected that a girl awarded an Art Scholarship at 13 + will study Art for GCSE, and at AS and A2, and a student awarded an Art Scholarship at 16+ will study Art at AS and A2. Should an Art Scholar decide not to continue with Art as an examination subject then the scholarship will be reviewed.

One scholarship is offered at 11+ and one scholarship at 13+ at up to 10% of full day or boarding fees plus tuition fees for two instruments. These scholarships will normally continue through to the end of the Sixth Form.

The candidate (if external) is required to be successful in the School’s entrance examination.

The following are guidelines to the standard required in two instruments; it would be an advantage if one of these instruments is the piano. However, potential as a musician is more important than actual grades achieved and not having reached the levels indicated below should not prevent a scholarship application being made.

11+ Main instrument Grade 4 Second instrument Grade 1/2 13+ Main instrument Grade 5 Second instrument Grade 2/3

To continue with the scholarship into the Sixth Form the scholar should have reached these standards:

Main instrument Grade 7/8Second instrument Grade 4/5

The candidate needs to have the ability to sing, to have experienced choral singing, to be able to sight read, and to have a good foundation in the theory of music.

Awards made at 11+ and 13+ are reviewed annually and it is expected that satisfactory progress will be made as well as a positive contribution to the musical life of the school through participation in choirs, orchestras or other ensembles.

Candidates who apply for a Music Scholarship are required to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument/voice and one piece on their second instrument/voice. Candidates must also offer to sing an unaccompanied song or hymn of their own choice.

Sight reading is expected on the main study only. Documentary evidence of examinations passed in both practical and theoretical grades must accompany an application.

Tests in general aural awareness will also be given. This may take the form of studying an unseen piece of music for 20 minutes and then performing it. Candidates will take part in other musical activities on the day.

It would be expected that a Music Scholar will study Music for the relevant public examinations at GCSE and A-Level.

Music ExhibitionsExhibitions are awarded throughout an academic year to cover the tuition fees for at least one instrument. Candidates should show a lively interest in all areas of the musical life of the school as well as showing promise on their chosen instrument(s).
