Principal’s Report

ANZAC Day I attended Glen Innes’ ANZAC Day activities on Thursday 25 April. It was wonderful to have so many of our students involved. Our school captains Alejandro Crossley and Naomi Eastwood represented Glen Innes High School at the Dawn Service and Commemoration Service and presented “An Oration on the Theme of ANZAC”. In addition to the students that marched with the school, we had students represent many community groups and those that supported from the sidelines.

Our school commemorated ANZAC Day on Tuesday 30 April at a school assembly. Thank you to Mr Ken Michell, President of the Glen Innes Sub-branch for acting as our Guest Speaker and Mrs Helen Millar for her speech. Thank you also to: Year 11 student Alkira Blair-Bain who

acknowledged Country; Ms Genevieve Byrne, the HSIE Faculty, Mrs Kelly

Gaden, the SRC students, the School Leaders Alejandro Crossley, Naomi Eastwood, Evan Byrne, Lachlan Macansh and Tahnee Conroy for organising and running this event;

Tahnee Conroy who performed a brilliant original song that she wrote on war; and

Year 12 students Callista Sheridan, Heidi McCormick, Jennifer Mackenzie who also supplied music.

Celtic Festival Term 2 started at a running pace with the annual Australian Celtic Festival taking place here in Glen Innes last week. I was impressed with the quality of the items presented at the Celtic Festival Schools’ Performances and the Opening Ceremony. All students and staff involved in the performances should be congratulated on their efforts. These events are very popular and always well received.

School Athletics Carnival Our annual School Athletics Carnival will take place on Wednesday 22 May at King George Oval. This is a compulsory activity with all students, including seniors, expected to participate. The School Canteen will be operating from the oval. The school will be closed. Spectators are welcome to come along.

Students are to go directly to King George Oval to commence the day.

AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) Our school is proud to be an AIME Partner School. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have the opportunity participate in the AIME program as of Week 3. Year 12 Biology

Year 12 Biology students at Glen Innes High School have enjoyed the recent topic on 'Genetic Change.' Whilst this topic is highly relevant to the future direction of biological research it can be hard for high school students to engage with the modern technologies involved as they are highly technical and expensive. However we were still able to genetically engineer bacteria (E.coli) to host and express a 'glow in the dark' gene naturally present in algae.

This was clearly both interesting and fun and also showed that there is no limit to what our students can do!

High school agriculture students from across the Northern Tablelands, including from Glen Innes High School, participated in the 2019 Schools Property Planning Competition at a field day at Bald Blair, Guyra on Thursday 2 May.

The Schools Property Planning Competition assists teachers in the delivery of property planning and sustainable farm management practices and principles to their agricultural students. Participating either individually or in small groups, students are given the scenario that they are consultants contracted by the landholder to prepare a property plan to ensure profitability and sustainability of the farm business.

The learning outcomes link to the Agriculture Stage 6 Subject ’Farm Case Study’ and the competition is targeted at students in Year 11.

The Schools Property Planning Competition Manual: Bald Blair (PDF 4.4MB) provides all of the background information and resources required to complete the property plan.
