You’ve probably heard the advice:

“See the big picture” or “Don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees.” As a congre-gation and a Jewish community, it is important to have a vision (the big picture) of who we are and what we can become. At the Emanuel, we are passionate about Jewish living. But when major events happen that are beyond our control, like what we experienced this past year in the economy, we may worry excessively about the big picture and neglect the little things that really do matter the most. So let’s commit to the little things in 5770. This synagogue has grown and sustained itself over the last 90 years based on all of the little things we and our ancestors have done. These thoughts are inspired by authors and business executives Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval, who wrote: “if we concentrate only on the big picture, the result will be that the small cues, simple gestures, random acts of loving-kindness that give life texture and meaning will often be overlooked or ignored.” And isn’t one of the foundations of Judaism the commitment to take action, to do good deeds and engage in acts of loving-kindness? There are many mitzvot ready for us to perform. And there are thousands of actions, in furtherance of good deeds, that we can take to improve our own lives, the lives of others and the vitality of our congregation. In isolation, each may appear small but in the aggregate they will have the force of positive change. So I would like to concentrate on three little things that can produce powerful growth for the Emanuel: (1) little gestures of welcome; (2) small talk; and (3) the willingness to go the extra inch.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — LET’S NOT NEGLECT THE “LITTLE THINGS” IN 5770 .......... by Alan S. Parker

First, little gestures of welcom-ing. The Board has spearheaded our cadre of greeters at Shabbat services and holidays this past year. Stationed at the doors, members and guests are welcomed with warm words of wel-come. This small step has been rec-ognized sometimes with surprise, but overwhelmingly with appreciation. But that is just the beginning; we are known as a welcoming congregation but we must not stop doing what we do well or be content with the work of just a few greeters. Every one of us is a greeter every time we are in our sacred building. Practice a little act of random lov-ing kindness. When someone sits near you during services, friend or strang-er, let them know the page number in the siddur. Better yet, give him/her

your siddur open to the correct page. Consider “passing the siddur” when-ever you can. Make someone welcome by invit-ing them to Friday Night services or to join you at one of our Friday night dinners. Second, small talk. Some of us are better at this than others. With instant messaging, email, and twitter we may become better at a “tweeting,” than small talk which has the power of positive results. We can easily make someone feel appreciated and special if done in good spirit and good humor. Think about the success of Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. They made their guests feel welcome and their main focus was to make the guest

A PRESENT FOR OUR MEMBERS

The words and melodies that we use to pray connect us as a con-

gregation and as a people. Under the direction of our Mem-bership Committee and with thanks to The Fierston Family, we have created a CD of our Shabbat morn-ing melodies for our Emanuel family to listen to in their homes, cars and on iPods. It is our hope that these prayers will become like old friends with which we have pleasant, mean-ingful encounters in synagogue. An accompanying booklet tells about the meaning of each prayer and the body language used for each. Be sure to pick up your copy of Shabbat Morning at The Emanuel at Rosh Hashanah services, Saturday morning, September 20.

NOTES FROM THE CANTORCANTOR’S ASSEMBLY MISSION TO POLAND — JUNE-JULY, 2009by Hazzan Sanford Cohn

When Cantor Nathan Lam

of Los Angeles, a former president of the Cantor’s Assembly, first pro-posed a two-week Mission to Poland and Israel, I knew it was going to be a worthwhile ex-perience. Even though I could only take a week off from my family and synagogue, my week in Poland lived up to my expectations. As one of ap-proximately 70 hazzanim and about 300 laypeople, I will never forget this inspiring journey. I arrived in Warsaw on Monday afternoon, June 30, along with several of my colleagues who joined me for departure from JFK Airport. The first program on our itinerary was a lecture at the Nozyk Synagogue. Now, I had noticed that we were scheduled for a lecture by Professor Stephen Berk every day of the trip. My initial dread of sitting through a lecture every day was quelled within five minutes of listening to this gifted and enthusiastic expert on European history. His initial lecture was fol-lowed by the Opening Ceremony of our Mission, which included Minha and Ma’ariv services led by 2 of my colleagues, Ivor and Joel Lichterman, whose father was the last Hazzan to serve in the Nozyk Synagogue before the Nazis invaded Warsaw and turned this beautiful, classically styled syna-gogue into a horse stable. It was the only synagogue to survive the nearly total destruction of the city. On Tuesday morning we toured all of the important Jewish sites in Warsaw: the Jewish Gensa Cemetery that contains over 250,000 graves; the Umschlagplatz Memorial, the former train depot from which thousands of our people were transported to the camps; and Mila 18, the Masada-like fortress made famous by Leon Uris’s

novel. At the Nathan Rappaport Memorial to the Heroes of the War-saw Ghetto, we conducted a memorial concert of Yiddish songs and Hebrew prayers to honor those who perished. On the other side of the plaza, the cornerstone was being laid for the Museum of Polish Jewry, expected to open in 2011. That night we participated in a major concert at the Polish National Opera House, with the resident or-chestra and chorus. Imagine my pride at seeing my dear friend and colleague, Joseph Ness of Beth El Temple, conduct this huge ensemble while other colleagues sang classic cantorial selections in the heart of Poland, a country that had, at one time, been the home of hundreds of the most renowned hazzanim in the world. The program also included the premiere of a symphonic piece by Charles Fox, a California-based composer best known for pop songs and TV themes in the 1970’s, setting the words of a prayer offered by Pope John Paul II during his 2000 visit to Israel. For the concert finale, all of the cantors ascended the stage to join in Lewandowski’s “Halleluya” (Psalm 150) that we sing at the Emanuel on Rosh Hashana. On Wednesday morning we heard presentations from two different organizations that are working on improving relations between Jewish and non-Jewish Poles, and between Poland and Israel. I feel very optimis-tic about the future of these relations after such a troubled past. We were then treated to a delightful perfor-mance of Yiddish theatre music in the Ida Kaminska Jewish State Theater by more CA colleagues, including Faith Steinsnyder, a former Connecticut resident. This is still an active theater with a resident company that per-forms mainly in Yiddish. The remainder of that day was

spent traveling by train to Krakow, where we were based for the remain-der of our stay. The only thing that stands out about this leg of the journey is the gently rolling countryside that looks just like many parts of the U.S. The next day, Thursday, was the most difficult, yet meaningful, of the trip. We left at 7:00 a.m. on buses to Auschwitz. While on the bus, we listened to a recording of appropriate readings and songs to set the mood. A somewhat surreal feeling surrounded us as we approached the gate. Once inside, we were all filled with such a mixture of feelings, ranging from the dread of this miserable place to victo-rious feeling that our people has sur-vived in spite of it. We held a Shaharit service on the grounds, complete with Torah reading and a very mov-ing “El Maleh Rahamim.” The CA’s sefer Torah was unrolled to surround the ’amud with many of us forming a circle around it with our talitot. I felt a strong sense of comfort and support being there with my fellow cantors.A short bus ride took us to Birkenau, the camp built by the Nazis for the sole purpose of exterminating mil-lions of innocent, mostly Jewish, men, women and children. We marched into the camp on the railroad tracks that brought the victims, accom-panied by an entourage of Israeli military officers who happened to be there for training purposes. I sang in a seven-voice men’s ensemble at the railroad platform where families were separated and children who were too young to work were immediately tak-en to be slaughtered. My memories of this place will forever have an impact on me and my dedication to serving our people, especially our youngsters.

LEARNING / Talmud TorahCommunity of

SCHOOL NEWSby Judith T. Fox, Director of Education

As usual we have busy throughout the summer preparing for the

coming school year. The theme for our parent seminars and family pro-grams this year will be “Kehillah — The Jewish World.” Kehillah means community and we are preparing a variety of family programs to encour-age our children and their parents to think about their place in the Jewish world. This year we are fortunate that most of our religious school staff will be returning. Yael Friemann who was part of our Beit Sefer Tichon faculty last year will be teaching our Wednes-day 5th Grade. Yael has recently moved to our community with her husband and baby. She has had several years experience teaching Israel and Judaica. Cantor Cohn will again be teaching Trop in the 6th Grade on Sunday mornings. Rabbi Small has returned from his sabbatical and has many new ideas for his 7th Grade class. Josh Dorsch will join our clergy team as our Student Rabbi. On Shab-bat he will facilitate Bar/Bat Mitzvah club and on Sundays he will teach classes in 7th Grade and Beit Sefer Tichon. Josh comes to us with several years of teaching and camp experi-ence and is excited about working with our congregation. All of us in the Education Depart-ment are looking forward to a rich and exciting school year. We can’t wait to greet you on our opening days.

Emanuel USY has a wonderful, newly elected chapter board of officers who have great plans for an outstanding year. Congratulations to our new teen

CAN YOU HELP?

We are making a few changes around the

Emanuel and you can help! We have recently purchased a replacement for our organ which played its last notes dur-ing Passover. We are in the process of renovating the main coatroom across from the of-fice so it will function better and create some much needed storage space for the office. We would like to replace the win-dows in the office wing, so they will be more energy efficient. If you would like to be an angel and either fund or help fund these important projects, please contact Suzanne Connell at 236-1275.

TOWARD A COOL SHUL

We took another step in “greening” Emanuel recently when the students of Yael Freeman’s Community Service Class of the Beit

Sefer Tichon planted two eight foot tall honeylocust trees. The trees were purchased with contributions to our Green Building Fund by Bruce Bergman, Dan Fine and Anne Shemkowitz.

The trees will shade the office, an oven in the summer, making it more comfortable and reducing air conditioner use. The trees will take up CO2, reducing that greenhouse gas, thereby slowing global warming, and they will beautify the area near the parking lot doors. Our teens each physically had a hand in this true tikkun olam activity. We’re thinking globally and acting locally by demonstrating the Jewish value of being good stewards of the earth.

We will continue to look for ways to reduce energy use and save money at The Emanuel. You can help by making a donation to our Green Building Fund.

For my second year as a Sar-El vol-unteer, I was assigned to Matzrap,

one of the bases at Tel Hashomer, the medical base of the Israeli Defense Forces near Tel Aviv. My assignment as well as that of the other 6 volun-teers with whom I worked, was to empty and repack the medical back-packs that the medics and doctors use during times of action in Israel. From our civilian supervisor, Peggy, we learned that if a backpack was not packed correctly and supplies were missing, a life could be lost. There were ap-proximately 30 volun-teers from many coun-tries including the United States, Great Britain, Australia and Norway. Not all of us were Jewish, but all came with a love of Is-rael and the desire to be of assistance. Our living arrangements were in bar-racks with women separate from men. Sharing our meals with many of the soldiers particularly at mid-day, which was the main meal, we could see the effect of our presence. Many were curious about our reasons for coming, but were appreciative of the support that we brought. Evenings were often spent attending seminars on many topics relevant to life in Israel and the IDF, were planned by our Madricha Keren and Madrichot Nachshon. I was on base during Yom Hashoa and Yom HaZikaron and attended the military ceremonies to mark both

of these. Each was quite solemn and conducted in Hebrew. At both, the commanders spoke and the soldiers sang, read poems or letters to mark the occasion. At 11:00 a.m. on Yom HaZikaron, sirens are sounded and all work and conversation ceased not only on the base, but all over Israel. In the evening we attended another ceremony at the memorial

at the Logistics base, similar to the one at Matzrap, but with the inclusion of lay-ing wreaths by family members, who had lost someone. Know-ing that most Israelis have lost someone or knew someone that has died due to war, the emotional effect of the evening was strong and brought me to tears.

I felt the gratitude of the Israelis wherever I was in Israel, in a shop or hotel, eating at a restaurant, sightsee-ing or sitting on the El Al plane. This was most apparent when I attended services at the Agron synagogue and was given an aliyah at Mincha in ap-preciation of my service. As a result of my experiences, I have developed a greater connec-tion to Israel and feel at home there. I have made friendships with people from all over the world, who have shared this very meaningful experi-ence. These bonds will bring me back to Israel as a Sar-El volunteer for many years to come.

SAR-EL: SERVICE TO ISRAEL

by Louise C. Rosenberg

A more extensive article appeared in the Jewish Ledger June, 2009. An abridged ac-count appears below. For more information concerning becoming a Sar-El volunteer, please contact Louise C. Rosenberg [email protected].

There were approximately 30

volunteers from many countries including the United States, Great

Britain, Australia and Norway. Not all of us were Jewish, but all came with a love of

Israel and the desire to be of assistance.

He will talk about food safety and other helpful hints. The cost of each class will be $18. This includes everything. We will be sending out info soon about the dates along with more details. If you are interested, please email Jeff at [email protected] or Saul at [email protected]. Brotherhood Programming is subject to change. Our meetings are open to all members and we encourage your participation. Do you have any ideas on what you would like to see the Brother-hood have for a program? Do you know of any speakers that would be interesting to members of the Broth-erhood and the synagogue? Don’t be shy. Let members of the ESB Board of Directors know your thoughts. Your input is solicited and encouraged.

CARING / ChesedCommunity of

We are planning a Silent Auction & Game Show Night at the Emanuel Synagogue on Saturday night November 14th to benefit

the Synagogue’s Scholarship Fund. We envision this to be a fun-filled evening for all ages from families with children to seniors. As many of you know, the Synagogue’s Scholarship Fund has provided scholarships to our members’ children for many years enabling them to attend Jewish summer camps and programs as well as a variety of USY kinnusim and conventions. We need your help raising money for the Scholarship Fund so scholar-ships can continue to be offered. Here are three ways you can help:1) Donate goods and services to auction. For example, perhaps you have a business or special talent that can be donated.2) Purchase a gift card from the Synagogue and donate so we can auction it. That way, you’re helping the Emanuel twice.3) Help us solicit specific businesses in the area for them to donate goods and services. We have letters for you to give to businesses and a list of spe-cific businesses that need to be asked. We’re also open to any businesses or creative ideas you can think of. I’m looking forward to working with you on the auction. Please con-tact me at [email protected] to join in helping to grow our Scholar-ship Fund. Thank you!

President’s Message, cont. from p. 2

look good, even at their own expense. So take an interest in your fellow members and any guest who enters this building. Third, go the extra inch. Our suc-cess as a Jewish community will result from how many of us are willing to go above and beyond what we ordinarily do. Whether it’s giving funds to the Emanuel or going out of your way to thank someone — whether clergy, professional or employee or one of our many lay leaders. Make a small contribution to one of our tribute funds in honor of someone. Use gift cards bought here to buy food; sure it may be a little out of your way, but why not go the extra inch? Don’t wait to be asked to volunteer, offer to help. Learn the name of someone new. Come to daily Minyan periodically for no reason other than to support those who are in a period of mourn-ing or observing a Yahrzeit. It’s just 30 “little” minutes out of your day. While helping others, you may also find some peace and comfort, a win-win on any morning or afternoon. Each of us has the power to make little things happen here at the Eman-uel. All the little things you do help us to be a sacred community. Little things tend to also be contagious and spread. If we join together and do the little things, we also get the big pic-ture right. On behalf of Michele, Jordan and Lauren, our best wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy and peaceful new year!
