A few weeks ago, while I was teaching at Camp Ramah, we experienced a power outage. At around five o’ clock in the afternoon, on a clear day, the power in the entire camp suddenly went out and remained off until about ten o’ clock that same night. Besides the main dining hall, which was equipped with generated power for such emergencies, the entire camp was thrust into complete darkness. Choshech
Mitzraim, the pitch black experienced in ancient Egypt just prior to the Exodus, is how contemporary Israelis describe the texture of such darkness. As I made my way back to my room I noticed a staff member, a mother instructing her two young children to turn off their flashlights and look up

“Pray as If Everything Depended on G-d…Act as If Everything Depended on You.”
The High Holiday season is a time of deep inner reflection and healing.
Healing our relationships with each other…healing our souls…and healing our relationship with G-d.
This Yom Kippur afternoon, we will be facilitating a community Healing Service for our congregation…an opportunity to reflect on both our physical limitations and our emotional brokenness.
Let’s be honest…I pray for a living. That’s what I do on your behalf…I am your SHALIACH TZIBBUR…Your Messenger of Prayer.
But even if I did not play that role professionally in your lives, I would find the concept of prayer and synagogue community very inviting.
There is a certain energy to communal prayer…a sharing of our spirits and our fears about tomorrow and all of our tomorrows.
Many people may find the idea of community sharing a difficult, even uncomfortable situation to put oneself thru. Trust me, once in the moment; there is a bonding and a cleansing that occurs in the healing environment.
I am convinced that emotional healing promotes better physical health…strength to cope with life’s fragilities and realities.
These words from a prayer book of my youth have always brought me comfort and insight:
“Prayer invites G-d’s Presence to suffice our spirits, G-d’s will to prevail in our lives.
Prayer may not bring water to parched fields, nor mend a broken bridge…nor rebuild a ruined city.
But…prayer can water an arid soul, mend a broken heart, and rebuild a weakened will.”
Let us pray as one community and heal our broken hearts together this High Holiday season.
Shana Tova…a Happy, Healthy New year to you and your loved ones,
Cantor Wartell Rabbi Barbara, MiRit and Ari
at the stars. I looked up and was amazed at the sight of the night sky. Its grandeur when seen without the intervention of artificial light was simply magnificent. There is a lesson to be learned from this incident. It is the lesson of perceiving through the eye of the soul and not only through the human eye. The stars are there every evening, but their brilliance becomes dimmed as a result of our own creation and as a result of our own unwillingness to see. We fail to see what is there. How can we learn to be present for such moments of grandeur in our lives? The great Jewish philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel maintains that the religious person “comes to sense the present moment. And this is an extreme achievement. For the present is the presence of God. Things have a past and a future, but only G-d is pure presence.” We rush through life without being present to that presence. Fortunately, every year around this time we have an opportunity to slow down, to change, to re-connect with that which beckons us. “The Hebrew word for repentance, teshuvah,” wrote Abraham Joshua Heschel, “means return. Yet it also means answer. Return to G-d is an answer to Him. For G-d is not silent.” Heschel maintained that G-d calls out to us but that we fail to hear the call. How do we answer? How do we respond to that call? That is precisely the point of the High Holiday season. We must ask ourselves that question and change our patterns of behavior. Judaism is an optimistic religion. We have great hope for the future of humankind precisely because of our ability to change. But change does not come easily. As we approach this High Holiday season let us work at taking time to recognize the spiritual in our lives, to reawaken our inner eyes so that we can fully appreciate the world entrusted to us. The message is a simple one. To successfully implement it, however, is far from easy. L’shannah Tovah Tikateivu! May you be inscribed for good in the Book of Life!

Lynn Rothman, President
Thank you to the entire board and the executive committee for all of your time and effort to make this year a great success for our synagogue. You have my heartfelt appreciation for your service. A special thank you to those who will be leaving the board. I know we can count on you to continue to work on committees and support the temple!
Out going officers: Peter Fisher School VP, Greg Harris Fundraising VP and Miriam Zager Membership VP. Beth Kushnik will no longer be serving as Financial Secretary, but will remain on the board as Sisterhood Co-President.
Outgoing board members: Sherri Bassner, Michael Langsam, Sheldon Linn, Amy Morrison, Richard Morse and Susan Vengrove.
Thank you all for serving our temple. You will be missed.
Thank you to the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley for their generous support of our Jewish Family Education program, the Rabbi William Greenburg Cultural Endowment Foundation for supporting our Scholar in Residence programs and the Charles & Figa Kline Foundation and the Sylvia Perkin Perpetual Charitable Trust for their continuing support of TBE through capital improvements.
I am happy to report that the Burn the Mortgage campaign, co-chaired by Rance Block and Amy Holtz, has raised $103,700.00 to date. Our loan obligation to the bank will be covered once we raise an additional $150,000. We expect to finish this campaign by the end of 2012, but to do so, we need everyone’s help. No gift is too small, or too big, so please contact Amy or Rance to participate in this important campaign.
Our new WEBSITE is up and running! It is a continual work in progress, incorporating the most up to date information, temple calendar and photos. The school section will be completed by the end of the summer and the ability to make donations online with the click of a button should also be implemented by then. We are holding off on that aspect until we are confident that security measures are in place for credit cards. Currently, you can click to Amazon directly from the home page. Michelle Rohrbach requests that you email her with any ideas or feedback. Our great appreciation and thanks to Greg Harris and Michelle Rohrbach for bringing this important project, which was initiated by Amy Holtz, to fruition.
Finally, thank you to our wonderful staff: Michelle Rohrbach: Executive DirectorOffice staff: Debi Christman, Ilene Rubel and

A Message From Alicia Zahn, Religious School Director . . .
As my son was figuring out his fantasy baseball lineup this summer, I was busy interviewing Religious School teachers. As he was researching players to make the best trades, I was putting together a fantasy team of teachers full of talent, creativity and energy. Finally, it all came together, and there is not a trade that I would make, as I am confident that this year will definitely be a winning season.
Introducing our 2012-2013 faculty:
Ganim - Morah Galit Cohen Grade 1 - Morah Jennifer Oxfeld Grade 2 - Morah Diane SteinGrade 3 - Morah Adi Ratner Grade 4 - Morah Elaine Langer and
Morah Miriam Harris-Botzum Grade 5 - Morah Shari SparkGrade 6 - Morah Esther MillerGrade 7 - Morah Jessica CookGrade 8 - Morah Shari SparkGrade 9 - Rabbi Re’em and Cantor WartellHebrew Lab (weekdays)-Morah Galit CohenMusic - Morah Nellie Gershtein
Now that the lineup is all in place, we are eager to begin the New Year with you, but are you ready for us? Here is a POP QUIZ to see:
It is the first day of Religious School. What is the most important thing for your child to bring to class? If you answered a pencil or a siddur, you are wrong. The correct answer is…..a positive attitude! A child’s attitude towards Religious School contributes to his/her entire view of Judaism. As a parent, you can promote a positive attitude towards religious education by showing interest in your child’s school projects/assignments and by making sure attendance is a priority. The teachers will do their part to make learning fun, interesting, and relevant, and we are looking forward to working together with you to make this a year full of positive Jewish experiences.
Also introducing: Regina Cruz! If you have recently called the school and the phone was answered by an unfamiliar (but VERY friendly) voice, you have probably reached Miss Regina. She is our new school secretary. Stop by the school office and say HI !

2012 High Holiday Information
Rabbi Hajioff will explore the role our bodies play with our souls in our striving towards a relationship with the Eternal Source of Life.
In addition to Rabbi Hajioff, our Selichot community choir, under the direction of Shari, Spark will perform.
The program and service, which will be held at Congregation Keneseth Israel beginning at 9:00 PM on September 8, 2012, promises to be an inspirational and thought provoking evening.
The change was made in order to accommodate families with younger children who might find it hard to sit for two and a half hours. In addition to the change in length and time of the service, a family room will be available from 11:00-12:30 in the school wing for those families who find that their children need a short break from the service. If you do utilize the available family room, please be sure to accompany your child.
We are making these changes to better accommodate families with younger children and to also bring our entire synagogue family together for what is the highlight of any worship service, the reading of Torah.
We would appreciate your feedback concerning this change and /or any other aspect of the worship style of our congregation. With best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year,
Rabbi Moshe Re’em and Cantor Kevin Wartell

Like a symphony that starts out with rationale and then reaches an urgent climax before a brilliant finish, or like a suspense movie that lays the groundwork for the major action scene before its resolution, Yom Kippur services create a certain pace that instill a sense of purpose for the day. The beginning, Kol Nidre, sets us up by annulling our vows from the past year and starts our confessions of sin. The next morning feels long and slow as we anticipate fasting and introspection throughout the day; will 7:30 p.m. ever arrive? We have diversions that shape the theme of Teshuva as well, services that allow us to think of our ancestors and not so much of ourselves: Avoda that tells the tale of the Cohen Gadol in the Temple on Yom Kippur, and Eleh Ezkerah that highlights the dramatic and tragic history of sanctifying G-d’s name.
ErevYom Kippur and throughout the day are slow but functional, giving us time to think and do the final work of Teshuvah. In stark comparison, when we reach the final service, Ne’ilah, there is a much more frantic pace, perhaps due to the fact that we don’t want to remain one second longer than the time for Shofar blowing!
But Ne’ilah is about much more than getting to the break-the-fast meal. If the goal of the day of Yom Kippur is to be written into the Book of Life and sealed in the final moments of Ne’ilah, then the name of the service is apt and descriptive of the urgency we might naturally feel. ‘Ne’ilah’ is translated as ‘closing’ or ‘locking’ of the gates…and while it once may have referenced the final service where the gates of the Holy Temple were closed,
2012 High Holiday InformationHigh Holiday Healing Service
Being Offered Yom Kippur Afternoon
Yom Kippur is a time of reflection, a time of taking an inner account of our souls.
It is also a time of healing.
This year we are offering a special High Holiday version of our monthly Healing Service during the afternoon break on Yom Kippur.
The service will be facilitated by Cantor Wartell in the Hammel Family Chapel at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
The Healing Service features meditation, Torah study, music and an opportunity to share intimately what is in your heart and soul.
For more information, please contact either Cantor or Rabbi at the synagogue.
Important Note!Saturdays, September 15th & 22nd, 2012
*NO KIDDUSH SERVED*Due to High Holiday Preparation
Pastries will be available
we all understand the metaphor of ‘closing’, hoping that G-d will give us a good, healthy, happy judgment as the Sefer Chayim is closed. There is no doubt about it: Ne’ilah feels scary as we wonder if we have understood the locked gates we faced in the past year, and contemplate what keys we might need to open new gates in the coming year.
It has been our tradition at Beth El to greet the final moments of Ne’ilah with joy: We did it! The children parade through the congregation with light sticks as Havdallah gets underway, and the final blasting note of the Shofar is blown.
This year, Jewish Family Education will take a part in using this final service as a time to constructively approach Ne’ilah by offering Gateway to the New Year. So often, in the rush of just finishing, we forget that Ne’ilah has an important message. Gateway to the New Year will explore the gates that obstruct our progress during the year versus the gates that allow us access, and help us think about what we can do Jewishly to improve our spiritual family experiences. This family Ne’ilah will occur concurrently with the congregational Ne’ilah, and we’ll all be together for the light sticks parade and Havdallah.
Please join us, all are welcome, on Yom Kippur at 6:30 p.m. The Ne’ilah liturgy includes ‘Pitchu li sha’arei tzedek, avo vam odeh Yah’, ‘Open up for me the Gates of Righteousness and I will enter and thank G-d.’ Shana Tovah – Gamar Chatimah Tovah!

USY Friends,
During this High Holiday Season we all look for ways to put more points on our side of the ledger and mitigate G-ds decrees . Donating to the Mort Levy USY Scholarship Fund is a way to have impact on three of Judaism’s most important tenets. First is G’mielut Hasadim – Performing acts of loving kindness. What better way is there than supporting children? Second is the giving of Tzeddakah – Charity. Finally as it says in the Shema you should teach your children about Judaism. Supporting teens attending a Convention whose main focus is Jewish Education certainly qualifies.
USY Conventions are expensive. They must be 100% Kosher, which increases the cost of any gathering. The conventions attract some of the finest educators the Conservative Movement and the Jewish Theological Seminary can offer. And two of them, International, this year in Boston and the Regional Spring Convention are held in Hotels. In past years the money in the Mort Levy USY Scholarship Fund was used to defray the cost of our teens who attended those conventions. This year because The Regional Winter Convention will be held here at TBE I would like to help out those attending our convention as well. I would like to attract as many of our TBE Teens to experience USY by coming to the gathering held in our own shul. The more money in the fund, the easier it is to pass out money to the convention attendees parent’s who bear the cost of these gatherings. Cost should not be a reason to not send our teens.
As I have mentioned many times before, Jewishly involved young adults have backgrounds in Jewish Youth Groups and Jewish camps. USY is a great way for them to get their start as Committed Jewish Youth.
Parents of TBE Teens: By this time you should have received an e-mail from me with a USY or Kadima membership form. Please fill them out for your teens and send them or bring them to the Temple office. If you have not received one or if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Speaking of the USY Regional Winter Convention to be held at TBE: sometime in December I will be asking for volunteers to house the USYers from out of town who will be attending the convention over President’s Day Weekend. Please consider opening your homes and showing them the hospitality of the Lehigh Valley.
Shana Tovah

Lisa Stein’s Mitzvah Project Talent Show
Calling all adults and children! Mark your calendars for Lisa’s Talent Show to benefit the music program at the Rubin-Zeffren Home, a girls’ orphanage in Israel. The Lev LaLev Fund supports orphaned and disadvantaged girls in Israel who have no families to nurture and care for them. Here is your chance to either share your talents with the community or enjoy wonderful performances by your fellow congregants, all while helping to raise money for a great cause! The show will take place on October 14, 2012, at 4 p.m., followed by a reception with food and entertainment by M to the Third Power. Fantastic door prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon.
This talent show is the second part of my Bat Mitzvah project. Thanks to the donations of many of my friends, family and Temple “family,” we have already raised more than $1,800 so that Bas-Sheva, a girl my age at the Rubin-Zeffren Home, was able to celebrate her becoming a Bat Mitzvah this summer. Most of the girls at the girls’ home were abused or neglected by their parents and therefore removed from their families. The Rubin-Zeffren home is a place where the girls can live happily with no worries and with plenty of provision for their physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs. They have wonderful opportunities for the girls, including a music program where they can learn guitar, organ, and hand drums. However, more money is needed to provide lessons in other instruments.
If you are interested in participating in the show, please contact me at [email protected] with a brief description of your proposed act, and then I will contact you. The sooner you contact me, the better, as we will have a limited number of time slots to fill. If you would like to donate a door prize, such as a piece of artwork; a gift certificate to a restaurant, your business, or for a service; or anything else; please let me know, and we will arrange for pick up of the item. Finally, please plan to attend what promises to be a spectacular talent show! Tickets purchased ahead of time through the Temple office are $10 - for adults and children 13 and over, $6 - for children ages 5-13, and free for participants, door prize and other donors, and children under 5. Tickets at the door will be $12 - for adults and children 13 and over and $8 - for children ages 5-13. All proceeds will go toward the music program at the girls’ orphanage through the Lev LaLev fund. Food sponsorships are also available; if you are interested in sponsoring this event, please contact me at [email protected].
The girls in Israel and I thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you on October 14!
~Lisa Stein

Bar MitzvahJacob Langer, September 29, 2012
Jacob is an 8th grade Honors student at Springhouse Middle School. His favorite activities include baseball, archery, and tennis. He is an avid Phillies fan, who loves to go to games and cheer them on. Jacob also loves to read and can sometimes go through a book in a single day.
Jacob’s Mitzvah Project was raising money for Autism Speaks by participating in their annual walk. He more than doubled his fund raising goal and spent the day walking with his entire family.
Jacob and his family invite the congregation to join them in celebration as he is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on September 29, 2012.
