Jackson State Community College and University of Memphis officials signed a partnership enrollment agreement Tuesday, September 13. The agreement established will guarantee university admission to any student who completes the associ-ate’s degree at JSCC. University officials say the Partnership Enrollment Program will allow the opportunity to easily finish a four-year degree at the U of M, beginning in the spring 2012 semester. This agreement provides only for general admission to the U of M.

Kyle Spurgeon, President and CEO of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, Lisa Piercey, MD and Vice President of West Tennessee Healthcare, and Annette Wilson, coordinat-ed school health administrator with Jackson-Madison County School System, were the fea-tured speakers in the “Putting County Health Rankings in Ac-tion” Webinar that was held on Tuesday, August 9. The speakers provided an overview of how the Jackson community used the County Health Rankings to improve the overall health and well being of the community.

Madison County ranked as the 20th healthiest place to live and

work in Tennessee last year, but only because of the number of health care providers, hospitals and specialists in the county. After seeing the 2010 County Health Rankings, released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Spur-geon knew that Jackson’s health conditions could be linked to its economic development success. “What I realized was that because of these rankings, you can now compare apples to apples,” Spurgeon said. “When a company is evaluating Jackson as a prospective location, they look at key location criteria – and wellness outcomes are part of that location criteria search. All other things being equal, a healthier community stands a better shot at getting a project than one that is unhealthy.” If the Availability of Health Care category were to be re-moved from the “2010 County Health Rankings” survey, Madison County would fall to 44th place in the state, from its current rank-ing of 20th. During the Webinar, Wilson spoke about the healthy choice initiatives already under way within the school system while Piercey spoke about the Wellness Center being planned for construction in downtown Jackson.

Ryan Porter joined the Chamber September 12 as the Vice President of Strategic Ini-tiatives and General Counsel. In his position, Porter will focus primarily on the Forward Jackson campaign and he will also be involved in Regional Economic Development. Porter graduated from Mid-dle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice with a

minor in Psychology and Sociology. Porter also gradu-ated Nashville School of Law in 2007.

Volunteer of the month:Beverly Absher

The Chamber is proud to announce that Beverly Absher, Department Chair of Continuing Studies and Associate Professor of Educational Leader-ship at Union University, was picked as the Sep-tember “Volunteer of the Month.” Absher serves as the Chair of the Leadership Jackson Program, after serving as Vice Chair last year. She also serves on the Board of the Leader-ship Jackson Alumni Association and on the Asso-ciation’s Committee for Professonial Development.

She is a frequent seminar leader for Chamber programs. “Like everyone else in our community, I could easily think I am too busy to help, or that my small contributions don’t really matter,” Absher said. “Then I remember a quote from Margaret Mead that I read many years ago... ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ I believe that to be true so I count it a joy and a privilege to have even a small role in making our community—and our world—a better place to live, work, worship and play!”

TVA AMONG “TOP UTILITIES” FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT For six years in a row, TVA has been named one of the top utilities in North America for economic development.

Site Selection magazine re-leased its top list on September 1, and detailed its criteria for pick-ing TVA and the other utilities on the list. Performance was a key ele-

ment in the magazine’s selections. In fiscal year 2010, TVA and its distributor customers, working with state and local partners, helped attract or retain more than 41,000 jobs and leverage $4.3 bil-lion in capital investment for the seven-state TVA territory. Site Selection noted that TVA’s econom-

ic development’s support has contributed to 264,500 new or retained jobs and $27 billion in business investment since 2005. Surveys of corporate end-users of power and site consultants were also important, Site Selection said, as were innovative programs – including energy efficiency and renewable energy programs – and incentives for business. “Innovation, tenacity and teamwork are powerful keys to economic develop-ment success in our region,” says John Bradley, TVA Senior Vice President of Economic Development. “The distributors of TVA power, re-gional and state agencies and economic, industrial and community leaders from throughout the TVA service region are all participants in this success. And the ultimate winners are Valley communities that have more opportunities to gain and retain jobs.”

Notable announced projects for the year included two major Amazon distribu-tion centers, one in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the other in nearby Bradley County; a new plant in Fort Payne, Ala., by Cana-dian automotive manufacturer A.P. Plas-man; and an expansion in Glasgow, Ky., by generic drug manufacturer Amneal Pharmaceuticals. In 2010, TVA continued its data center development program, assessing more than 50 sites across its service area for access, telecommunications, power availability and reliability, and other favor-able characteristics. To date, 18 data center sites are ready-for-development in the Valley, including one in Jackson, Tenn. TVA expanded its successful Val-ley Investment Initiative program, which rewards qualifying power customers that make ongoing investments in the region.

aeneas internet & telphone ranked on Inc. magazine 5000 list

For the third time, Inc. magazine has-ranked Aeneas Internet and Telephone on its annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. Previously named in 2008 and 2010, Aeneas Internet and Telephone joins the company of enterprises that have appeared on the list multiple times, many of which have grown to become national icons. In the state of Tennessee, only 77 compa-nies have appeared on the list multiple times. “Making the Inc. 5000 list for a third time is a great validation of our employees and the hard work they do,” said Jonathan Harlan, founder and CEO of Aeneas Internet and Telephone. “We’re proud that the state of Tennessee has embraced and sup-ported us as an alternative to the big national companies. It’s our customers that make this recognition possible.”

member spotlight: Steve Pitcairn, ActionCoach Business Coaching

Chamber Connection: Tell us more about your company and its mission?Steve Pitcarin: ActionCOACH Business Coaching provides one-on-one coaching to business owners and Executives to train and motivate them to achieve their dreams and goals. We educate the business community through public training sessions with organizations such as the Chamber, structured training of businesses through the SBA’s emerging 200 program in Memphis, and conducting in-house corporate training programs. We also build active networking groups in Jackson that both train and build strong strategic alliances.

Chamber Connection: What are some things people may not know about your organization? Steve Pitcarin: The one-on-one mentoring sessions are still the least known service that I provide. These

sessions combine training, brainstorming and accountability to fast track a businesses results. In addition, the coach is someone to talk though difficult decisions and ideas who is really interested in doing what’s best for your business.

Chamber Connection: What has helped your organization become a successful company in the Jackson community?Steve Pitcarin: Strategic alliances with others in the community where in helping them, my business also prospers. These include the Chamber, where by offering training programs to the Chamber, I’m exposed to business people who might need my services. Another would be our networking groups. By helping other quality business people be successful through referrals, they also refer businesses to me.

Chamber Connection: What are some of your future goals? Steve Pitcarin: A name change! We’re changing to Clear Vision Business Services later this year to recognize the wide variety of program and services that we provide in addition to our original ActionCOACH franchise. Also, continuing expansion throughout West Tennessee and Memphis, and utilizing and developing additional materials and programs to help business owners.

Chamber Connection: What’s the biggest community project you’re working on right now?Steve Pitcarin: A wide variety of small ones. We just finished facilitating yearly planning sessions for RIFA and the March of Dimes. Had a great time training the Leadership Jackson class on time management during its first session. We are also looking forward to conducting a training at the non-profit roundtable on October 6th and “B for Business” in November.

Chamber Connection: What are some recent successes your organization has experienced?Steve Pitcarin: A number of my clients have experienced significant growth in their businesses this year with some expanding their facilities and their staff. There are great opportunities for small businesses to react successfully in this economy and build market share.
