Greetings Franklin Families! I am returning as Principal at Franklin this 2019-2020 school year and could not be more excited. I have been an administrator in Pennsauken since 2014. The 2019-2020 school year we will continue to provide a positive academic atmos-phere for our students at Franklin Elementary. We have pre-k through 3rd grade. At Franklin Elementary, we strive for all of our students to reach their full potential. We want students to learn and love learning. We expect all of our students to respect themselves and others. At Franklin Elementary, we aspire for all students to excel in all areas of their academics. The staff at Franklin Elementary will work hard to ensure that all students are pro-vided with an environment that they feel safe and can learn. Phifer Middle School’s sixth grade students were able to experience a spe-cial field trip. They went to tour Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Super Bowl LII Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. On the trip they went behind the scenes of the sta-dium to see the Eagles’ locker room, the natural-grass field, meeting/interview rooms, and the special seating section (luxury suites).

One of the students who attend the school, Eva Lovett, said, “My favorite part was getting to be in one of the V.I.P. rooms because people pay so much money to sit and watch from there. We got to go there for a low price. It was also nice getting to learn some things about the Eagles’ stadium like how “green” the place is. Did you know they recycle all of the cooking oil they use to make Chickie & Pete’s crab fries into motor fuel that runs all of their maintenance equipment?”

Another student, Alina, said, “ My favorite part was seeing the field and learning about the Eagles history. I had no idea they were originally called the Yellowjackets!”

“My favorite part was when we got to go on the field because it felt like I was one of the players getting ready to play,” claimed Alexandra Rocchi, another sixth grade stu-dent who went on the trip.

Even though these students had different highlights of the trip everyone enjoyed it, including the teachers. It was a wonderful experience and the students and teachers are all looking forward to more trips like this in the future.

On September 29, 2019 Camfel Productions held an assembly for Howard Phifer Middle School. During this assembly Camfel Productions presentation “ Go Viral”, was based on three major topics - kindness, social media, and citizenship. Camfel Productions taught students - 6th, 7th, & 8th grades - that we need to be more responsible with our electronic devices (especially phones). For Instance, the presentation emphasized the fact that students can be very attached to their phones resulting in us pushing away our friends, family, and many valuable experiences in life. Additionally, this presentation taught my peers and me that it is important to be kind to peo-ple, and to treat people the way they would like to be treated. They empha-sized being kind by showing a video clip of a student standing up for her friend who was being bullied. Lastly, they taught us about good citizenship by speaking to those who feel isolated. This is easily done by simply being amiable. In summation, Go Viral was a very Informative presentation that all students can learn an inspiring message from!

The new 2019-2020 school year has begun on September 4, 2019. This school year is not like any

other as there have been several additions to the campus, curriculum, and even policies concerning

Pennsauken High School. Most notable to the school?s advancements have been the brand new track and

football field, regulated uniform hoodies, and the revival of Spirit Week.

However, these are not the only changes being made in Pennsauken High

School. The policies regarding discipline and attendance have become more

strict in an attempt to lessen the amount of absences amongst the school

population as well as to potentially raise standardized test scores, as Principal

Bonkowski has stated in a recent interview. Raising test scores and improving

the overall image of Pennsauken are two of the many goals Mr. Bonkowski has

for this school year. Mr. Bonkowski?s most important goal of the year though, is

to unite our school as one community.

In addition to disciplinary adjustments and school unity, other improvements to

PHS include new courses such as a Medical Arts Program, the EMT and Fire

Training course, and the new HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning)

class. Not only do these courses provide exposure to respected careers, they allow anyone who enrolls in

them to gain the proper training and credits required to enter the desired field. Medical arts students can

leave the medical arts course with certified nursing assistant and certified medical assistant credits, while

the EMT and Fire training students can be trained like professional EMTs and firemen. There are still more

developments to come throughout the year. Soon to be added to the campus are a new field house for

indoor and winter sports, a security vestibule for an even safer school, and a new media center. The

Penndian writers will be reporting on these projects throughout the year. Stay tuned.

Spirit Week has returned! The week of school pride will take place on the November 1st to November 6th. The highly anticipated Homecoming game is Friday, November 1st and the Homecoming Dance is Saturday, November 2nd. Other events and activities include Powderpuff Football and Class Color Day. "It 's exciting and I hope it lives up to what the movies show. I hope a lot more people participate since that makes Spitit Week what it is," says sophomore, Hannah Dahl. More information is to come, but Pennsauken High school students are ready and prepared to show their spirit!

The first football game of the season was held

on September 6, 2019. Pennsauken destroyed Paul VI,

32-13, a great start to

the season. Unlike any

of the previous years,

this game was held on

the turf under the night

lights. Following the

game, we were able to

sit down with Coach

Hutton, Offensive

Coordinator and

Quarterback Coach to

discuss the game as

well as the future of

PHS football.

Q: How long have you

been coaching, and what is your position?

A: I have been coaching for six years, and I am the

offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach.

Q: What were some good or important parts of the

game on September 6th?

A: I love how we came out with high energy and a great

effort. Our defense was strong and it was awesome that

we were able to score fast.

Q: What could you improve on for future games?

A: Honestly, we have to focus on perfecting the litt le

things. Right now, we?re as consistent as we can be.

Moving forward, if we can get the litt le things right, we

will be a scary team.

Q: What are some goals for the season?

A: Definitely progression. I want us to get better on a

week by week basis. Once we do that, the score will be

in our favor.

Q: What are some challenges that you expect for the

rest of the season? How will you overcome them?

A: Our main problem is staying focused. Due to school

and playing sports, the day you can seem long and

mental focus is harder. I want to be able to have strong

practices day in and day out. In order to overcome this,

they have to think and remember why they? are playing

football. They have to dig deep and find the willpower

to keep pushing through and stay focused.

Q: And finally, how do you feel about the season

overall?

A: Very optimistic. We?ve shown flashes of being a really,

really good football team. But we?ve also shown flashes

of being mediocre. If we continue to improve, we can be

a winning team. I?m very optimistic about this season.

Amanda Lezcano, our beloved senior and athlete at Pennsauken

High School, has recently been faced with a difficult situation. She

was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition where the

immune system attacks the nerves. This syndrome affects one?s

ability to walk, talk, and perform. However, Amanda, who has always

been a fighter, doesn?t let this syndrome hold her back. She has

continuously improved her mobility and functionality. Although

some aspects of her life have changed, her fiery personality and

humor hasn?t. When asked to make a ?motivational? statement, her

response was ? Ummmmm hmmmm idkkk?. However, Amanda isn?t

alone in her battle. She has the love of others who call and visit her.

In order to support her fight, many members of the school started

selling ?Amanda Up!? bracelets for $2 each. These blue bracelets have

been widely distributed throughout the athletes of PHS, who have all

known Amanda for her non-stop dedication on and off the field. All

the profits go to Amanda?s family. Although Amanda is unable to

play this season, the Girls Soccer team continues to compete with

Amanda in their hearts, starting every game with ?Sauken? on three,

Amanda on six?.

AMANDA UP!

I never went to the PHS class of 2020 freshmen orientation because I was supposed to attend Camden Catholic. As I am writing here, it didn't work out for me there and I returned to the comforts of Pennsauken where I am currently a senior leader. One of the largest tasks undertaken by the senior leadership class is Freshmen Orientation. The transition from middle school to high school is rough. I myself struggled greatly with it. Some see Freshmen Orientation as something their parents force them to go, but those who really take advantage of it create bonds that can last the rest of the school year. I was always more of an awkward kid. I was never popular and fit in with the outcasts and the creative bunch. From the front of the auditorium, I saw natural groups forming of various cliques and popularity, and I spotted the "losers". The kids that classmates would make fun of for being weird, loud, or shy. The kids that people forget about in class because they aren't popular, but they are the sweetest person on Earth. The kids you grew up with, but never knew their names. I walked over and began conversing with them. Lo and behold, the freshmen I met restored my fate in the upcoming Class of 2023. Soon after, contact information was exchanged and I encouraged them to come to me if they have any questions or worries. It has been about a month since we first met and I still check up on them. We share a hello and a smile. We share laughs despite the class difference. The freshmen I met walked into school a tad more confident because they had seniors to make them feel welcomed. I am glad that PHS offers freshmen orientation for students like me.
