Setting Goals to be Achieved!
Agenda
• Explore your ideal vision for the future
• Learn about SMART goals and action plans
• Review the concept of goal ‘mapping’
• Identify potential obstacles to achieving goals and learn how to
navigate them
• Develop strategies for success
Why Set Goals?
• Goal setting is an important step toward:
– Becoming clear on what you want to achieve
– Separating what's important from what's irrelevant or a distraction
– Motivating yourself and maintaining accountability
– Building your self-confidence
Begin by Asking Yourself…
• When do you feel most motivated? Why?
• What are your greatest strengths?
• Which people have inspired you the most? How?
• What would you like to accomplish during your lifetime?
– Long term and short term?
– Professionally and personally?
Setting Yourself up for Success
• It’s best to set goals on a number of levels:
– Start with the ‘big picture’—identify large-scale goals
– Break these down into the smaller targets that you must hit to
reach your lifetime goals
• Work down to the things that you can do in the next:
– Five years
– Year
– Month
– Week
– Day
Begin with the End in Mind
• Consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or by a
significant and distant age in the future)
• Set goals in categories that are important to you, i.e. career,
financial, education, family, artistic, attitude, enjoyment, physical
health, public service…etc.
• Select one or more goals in each category that reflect what you
want to do
• Then, consider trimming again so that you have a small number
of really significant goals that you can focus on
• Make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you
genuinely want to achieve
Create Your Vision Statement
• Consider what you ultimately hope to accomplish and why that’s
important
• Ask yourself what you’re able and willing to commit to
– Consider your most meaningful values
– Factor in talents, strengths and skills
– Determine your potential contributions
• Write your vision down, being as specific as possible
• Post your vision statement somewhere you will see it
• Check in at regular intervals; reformulate as you go
Turn Your Vision Into SMART Goals
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable (or Action-oriented)
R – Relevant, rewarding, and realistic
T – Time-bound; track-able
Examples?
‘Shine’ Your Goals
• A shined goal inspires and motivates us
• It could be a few words, a picture, a song that you
hear…anything that will trigger a feeling of excitement and
motivation in you
• To shine the goal, think about why it is important to you:
– What will achieving it mean to you?
– Try to picture yourself having achieved the goal—how do you
imagine feeling? What do you see? Who are you with? What
might you be doing that you’re not able to do now? Or
feeling?
Action Steps: Your Roadmap to Success
• In order to turn our goals into reality, we must break them down into
action steps
• Action steps should be very specific as well as time-limited
• Start by assessing your current situation/position
• Think backward from the stated goals—what will you need to do to get
from the current reality to your goal state?
• Make sure each action step is measurable
• After listing all your actions, go back and review
Additional Goal-Setting Strategies
• State each goal as a positive statement
• When you have several goals, give each a priority
• Write your goals down—this crystallizes them and gives them more
force
• Post your goals in visible places to remind yourself every day of what it
is you intend to do
• Keep the low-level goals that you're working towards small and
achievable
• Set performance goals, not outcome goals
• ‘Map’ larger goals
Goal Mapping Example
One of Annie’s goals is to become the director of her department at work.
Her goal ‘map’ might look like:
•Five-year goal: Become department director
•One-year goal: Participate in at least two projects that the current director
is leading
•Six-month goal: Sign up for/begin an Excel training course
•One-month goal: Talk to the current director to determine what skills are
needed to do the job
•One-week goal: Book the meeting with the Director
Assess and Mobilize Your Resources
What types of resources would be most valuable in facilitating the
achievement of your goals?
• People Resources:
– Supervisors/managers, colleagues
– Counselors, coaches, mentors
– Family and friends
• Technical Resources:
– Classes, training
– Opportunities to practice /work on developing skill sets
Potential Obstacles
• Procrastination
• Unknowns
• Anxiety/fear
• Negative thinking; rigid or ‘closed’ mindset
• Unclear expectations
• Lack of information/structure
• Not enough time/perception of time
Create a Plan for Navigating Obstacles
• Consider past reactions to obstacles
• Be mindful of your actions, beliefs and values
• Keep tuning in to your thoughts
• Work to re-frame any negative messages
• Create/incorporate positive habits
• Identify triggers that could derail progress
• Think about what you could if you get stuck
Seeing Goals to Fruition
• How will you ensure that you carry out your goals?
• Break larger goals into smaller ‘chunks’
• ‘Practice ‘10-minute steps’
• Write down any resources related to your goals that you currently have
in place/are readily available to you
– How might you draw on these resources?
– Create action steps and assign timeframes for each one
• Identify other resources you might need to achieve your goals and
make a plan for obtaining them
Post-Goal Achievement
• Take time to enjoy the satisfaction of achieving a goal, and consider the
positive effects it has had
• If the goal felt too easy, make the next one harder.
• If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next
goal a little easier.
• If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do
so.
• If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide
whether to set goals to fix this
• Observe progress you've made towards other goals
• Reward yourself appropriately
Ongoing Strategies for Success
• Keep your goals close
• Proactively plan ahead; keep longer-term vision in mind
• Schedule time for action steps as well as ‘back-up’ times
• “Eat that frog!”/Find ways to generate excitement about tasks
• Tell others about your goals; check-in regularly
• Spend time on “not urgent but important” items
• Keep records of all the proactive steps you’ve taken
• Reward yourself for progress
