After the service the chazan said a special prayer for the soul of the departed, known as “keyl molei rachamaim.” Afterwards the crowd dispersed. Maharil Dsiskin however summoned the shamash (attendant) of the synagogue, and gave him a coin. Special Halachos Pertaining to Tisha B’Av

that falls on Shabbos

On Shabbos afternoon it is permissible to study subjects not per-

taining to Tisha B’Av. It is customary not to study Pirkei Avos.

There is no seudah hamafsekes. It is permissible to eat and drink

whatever one wishes. some permit swallowing a pill that makes it

easier to fast. Birkas haMazon may be said with a zimun. Zemiros

may be sung. Eating, drinking, or washing any part of the body is

permitted only until sunset. if you bentched before sunset, you

may eat or drink until sunset without a precondition. You may sit

on a chair until nightfall. Since it is not proper to wear Shabbos

clothes on Tisha B’Av, it is best to change clothes after nightfall.

Baruch haMavdil should be recited before changing into week-

day clothes. No preparations for Tisha B’Av may be made until

Shabbos is over. Tisha b’Av shoes or Kinos [unless studied on

Shabbos] may not brought to shul until nightfall, even in an area

with an eiruv. Shabbos shoes may not be removed until night-

fall. After Ma’ariv but before the reading of Eicha, a candle is lit

and Borei me’orei ha’eish is recited. If you forgot to do so, you

may recite it anytime throughout the night. It is proper for all the

listeners to sit down while the blessing is recited. Dirty dishes

from Shabbos should not be washed until Sunday after chatzos,

unless they will attract insects.
