Dear ICHS Family,It is an honor for me to serve the Felician Sisters and all of the constituencies of Immaculate Conception High School as the President/Principal of this fine institution. I truly believe that God has called me to lead ICHS as we approach our 100 year anniversary in 2015, while keeping the long history of IC at the foundation of our journey. We remain committed to our mission to educate and transform students into young women of competence, compassion, and commitment in a Catholic Felician-Franciscan tradition of leadership and service.Good news abounds. In an era of difficult economic times, especially for Catholic schools, Immaculate Conception is experiencing an incredible renaissance. More and more, ICHS is becoming the school of choice for young women in the area. Our recent history of growth in the student body continues with a dramatic leap in registrations for next year. In fact, freshman enrollment for 2012-13 has jumped by more than 35% from last year, with 86% of the incoming class indicating that ICHS

is their first choice! The huge jump in new students means our overall enrollment will be 19% higher. In addition, the level of financial support for ICHS is skyrocketing, with a 93% increase in the number of alumnae, parents and friends making gifts to ICHS so far this year. There are many exciting events happening at IC, and I strongly encourage you to visit any time to see the improvements that we have accomplished. Under the direction of the Felician Services, Inc. our Mission Integration Program has flourished, and our students are becoming more in tune with the Felician Sisters’ Core Values. We have modified our curriculum schedule, and along with it our Collegiate Academy (formerly called Project Forward) which affords our students an opportunity to earn up to 30 college credits prior to graduating from IC. With the continued support of the Felician Sisters we had the opportunity to complete major renovations to our physical building as well. A state of the art digital sign was installed, the lockers were given an electrostatic coat of paint along with new built in master locks; the auditorium stage has been sanded and given a new shine; and the cafeteria, bathrooms and several classrooms were freshly painted. New gym windows have been installed, and new banners are hanging from the light poles surrounding our buildings announcing to our neighbors and the community, “ICHS is here.” This summer we have installed a wireless network in the school, and all of our teachers will be using laptops in the classrooms in this new school year The plethora of positive changes at ICHS can even be seen in this redesigned Spirit Magazine. Our hope is that through this upgraded publication, you will gain a better understanding of the myriad ways in which ICHS is making a difference in the lives of our students and in the world beyond our doors. Please feel free to share with me your ideas and suggestions on how we can make “your” Magazine even better. But don’t stop there. The one piece of the puzzle that I need your help with is YOU! You are such an important part of the ICHS community that I ask that you please update your contact information by contacting the Advancement Office or by visiting the “Alumnae” page on our website, www.ichslodi.org, and provide your email address so we may stay connected. Most importantly, I invite all alumnae, parents, and friends to return to IC and relive your fondest memories. We are excited to share with you the resurgence occurring within this building, and we hope you will visit soon. We await you with open arms! ICHS is an institution on the move. Our heritage is strong, and our future is bright. Immaculate Conception will continue to be a force for good in this community, the region and around the globe. We invite your participation as we continue to build an even better and stronger ICHS. Join us, won’t you? Blessings,

Class of 1977 and 1981 Celebrate their Reunions!

On Friday, December 2, 2011, members of the Class of 1981 returned to Immaculate Conception High School to celebrate their 30th high school reunion. As part of the daylong event, which included tours of the school, and lunch with IC students, the alumnae addressed current ICHS students with the theme; “Pay it Forward”.

Shown from left to right in back; Melina Mara (award winning photojournalist and staff photographer for the Washington Post), Dr. Dianne Traflet (Associate Dean, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology and Founder and Co-Director of the Institute for Christian Spirituality at Seton Hall University), Regina Deible (Cardiovascular nurse at John’s Hopkins Hospital, and Director at Cardiovascular Consulting) Maryann Monaco (Labor and Delivery Nurse at Hackensack University Medical Center), Daria Jerauld (Division Manager Supply Management at John Deere Company), Carol K. Tobin (Principal, Via Veritas, LLC), and shown in front; Donna Salvacion (Corporate and Personal Massage Therapist).

The day ended with a NJ pizza/pastry party in the ICHS Faculty/Staff lounge.

The Class of 1977 held their 35th Reunion on Saturday, June 30, 2012.   Over 45 IC alumnae celebrated at LaReggia Restaurant located in Secaucus, NJ. Sandy Nasconte flew more than 20 hours, from New Zealand, to join in the festivities. Other alumnae came from as far away as California, Florida, and Virginia. Many alumnae from New York and New Jersey, were there as well. The food was delicious, the wine flowed the entire evening, and the Class of 1977 danced to the Village People, Donna Summer, The Weather Girls, and other artists from the ‘70’s until they couldn’t dance anymore! Margaret Sherlock hosted a barbeque at her home the next day to wind down the exciting weekend. The Alumnae Office would like to give a special thank you to Sandy Nasonte and Esther Camarotte for planning such a joyous special event.

Class of 1968It seems like just yesterday we were making plans to meet at the Saddle Brook Mariott for our 25th reunion! Fast forward to 2013 and it will be 45 years since we graduated. With that in mind, those of us from our class who are on the Alumnae Committee are compiling a master list of e-mail addresses. We will use the e-mail list to keep you updated and informed about news and upcoming events for our class. The list will also be made available to you. What a great way to reconnect with friends from the past!

Please forward your current name, maiden name, and e-mail address to Maryann Ciesla at: [email protected]

We’d love to hear from you! If you or someone in your class, would like assistance planning your class reunion, please call Nadine Mooers at (973) 472-7231 or email [email protected].

Immaculate Conception HS Alumnae Association Scholarships

The Alumnae Association of ICHS is pleased to announce the recipients of the first ever ICHS Alumnae Association Scholarship. This financial scholarship recognizes outstanding ICHS juniors and seniors for their academic achievement, leadership, extracurricular activities, and dedication to community service.

After many deliberations and discussions, the scholarship selection committee chose rising senior Caitlyn Hults ‘13, and rising juniors Ashley Garcia ‘14 and Kaitlyn Bolcar ‘14 to receive the scholarship for the 2012-2013 school year.

“The selection committee was extremely impressed with all of the ICHS young women who applied for the Alumnae Scholarship, and we had a tough time making our final decision from all of the deserving applicants,” said Ms. Robin Dellraria Manzo ‘73, President of the ICHS Alumnae Association. “We were pleased to see the extremely high caliber of young women who attend IC and their dedication to academics, community service,

and leadership,” said Ms. Manzo. “We encourage all of the scholarship applicants to continue their hard work, and we are confident they will all continue to have awesome accomplishments now and in their future endeavors!”

All of the proceeds raised from Taste Of... and other ICHS Alumnae events directly benefit IC students in the form of scholarships. If you would like more information about how to get involved with the Alumnae Association or to work on our committees, please contact Nadine Mooers, Director of Institutional Advancement at [email protected] or (973) 472-7231.

During Easter break 2011, Immaculate Conception teachers Mr. Thomas Mann and Ms. Diane Setter escorted 15 ICHS students to Italy for a week of wonderful cultural experiences, visits to historic sites, drives through beautiful countryside, and delicious Italian food. After flying from JFK to Milan via Madrid, the travelers transferred to Venice for two days. Gondola rides were just one of many highlights. Next, they moved on to Florence for another two-day stay, with a side trip to Siena. Finally, following an afternoon at Assisi, the happy group made their way to Rome for three thrilling days highlighted by all-day visits to Pompeii and the Vatican. The grateful wanderers returned home exhausted, but happy.

On Monday April 30, ICHS alumna and Woman of Distinction Susan Diverio ’81 visited ICHS with a group of her students from St. Croix. Sue and her students made a wonderful presentation to our girls describing their work in St. Croix. Sue’s students also visited ICHS classes and answered a plethora of questions by our students. As a result of this connection, eight ICHS students are traveling to St. Croix on a Mission Trip and Cultural Exchange program with students from St. Joseph’s High School in St. Croix. Our students will participate in beach cleanups, retreats, the celebration of Catholic Mass, programs at the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, and many other activities. Please look for more information about this exciting trip in the next Spirit Magazine.

This past year, IC students Maggie Flood, Katrina Flood, Irene Sogotis, and Megan Saunders were part of the American Special Children’s Pilgrimage Group (ASCPG). This organization brings disabled children to Lourdes France, for a week of fun and excitement. The group travelled during the Easter week and took part in activities such as a scavenger hunt around the town and attending Catholic Mass every evening. The students said that they have so many memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. “Just seeing the children’s smiles on their faces makes everything we do so worth it. It is truly a life-changing experience,” said Megan Saunders. The group plans to travel to Lourdes France again Easter Break 2013.

Franciscan Heritage WeekAs part of week-long events to commemorate our Franciscan heritage and to experience a night of solidarity with the poor, 25 students and six chaperones at ICHS participated in “A Night On The Street.”

This overnight experience taught students what it might feel like to be homeless, living on the street. The girls slept outdoors for one night, with a single cardboard box as shelter – creating a “Box Village,” and using only a sleeping bag or blanket to keep warm on the cold night. The girls didn’t have access to have cell phones, iPods or any other electronic devices. No food or drinks were allowed.

“It felt scary,” said senior Emily McFadden. “You never knew what was going to happen to you, especially when we were sleeping. We had teachers and the police looking out for us, but homeless people have nobody to watch them. It must feel a lot scarier for them.”

“It was a very different experience,” said junior Mia Tummillo. “I wasn’t used to working for my food, or taping boxes together in order to have somewhere to sleep, but it taught me how much work it is to be homeless.”

When asked what they missed most while living homeless, McFadden said, “I missed my warm, cozy bed. I was freezing and I really wished I could have had more blankets. I also missed my family, and the feeling of home.”

“Even though the box was our home, it was lacking the family atmosphere,” added Tummillo. “I missed being able to sit on my couch and lay in my warm bed.”

The night began on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and concluded with a donated breakfast at 7 a.m. on Oct. 8. The girls spent the entire night outside in the back parking lot of ICHS. Throughout the evening the girls learned about life on the street and they explored their own feelings about being homeless. They heard a collection of stories by homeless people from different news articles and magazines. A few members of the Garfield Ambulance Corps told the girls about what they have seen and experienced working with the homeless, and what the dangers are when living out on the streets.

“I learned life is really rough for the homeless, and they really live like it’s survival of the fittest,” said junior Brianna Figueroa. “Sometimes their houses have to be knocked down at night or that they purposely go to the hospital just for a bed and a meal.”

The night was a real eye-opener for the students.“I took away that the homeless are real people too, and not to judge them just because they’re homeless,” added Figueroa.

In addition to “A Night on the Street”, we also had a very successful Franciscan Heritage Week. Each day reflected a different core value. On Monday we focused on Compassion and the girls brought in food and cleaning items for Magnificat Home. On Tuesday we focused on Transformation and the girls created gardens in the front and back of the school. They also cleaned up around campus and created a picnic area. On Wednesday we focused on Justice and Peace and the girls wrote letters of thanks to our soldiers through amillionthanks.org. Thursday we focused on Respect for Human Dignity and the girls held their annual “Fight Like A Girl” day in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. T-shirts with the slogan “Fight Like A Girl” were purchased by students, faculty, and staff. In addition, weekly dress down days were be held through the month of October. All proceeds were donated to the Susan G. Komen for a Cure Foundation.

Many great things are happening and are going to happen with the new Youth Group and through Campus Ministry. Make sure you check out the ICHS website and keep up with Campus Ministry.

Plans for IC’s Centennial Anniversary are beginning. We would like to arrange several special events featuring alumnae speakers and entertainment, along with special regional gatherings to commemorate the 100th anniversary of IC. We need your help!

An all school community gala celebration event will be held in the Spring of 2015. We are looking for volunteers to help with planning the anniversary, as well as provide historical background and perspectives about

IC. We are also looking for any Immaculate Conception High School memorabilia donations for a special exhibit we will create. Please contact Nadine Mooers at [email protected] or 973-472-7231 if you need more information, or want to join the ICHS 100th Anniversary planning committee.

The Immaculate Conception High School Hall of Fame is designed to recognize and honor (in perpetuity) alumnae, faculty/staff, volunteers, and contributors to IC’s outstanding tradition of educational and athletic excellence. Knowledge and recognition of IC’s past personalities and their accomplishments will foster pride and satisfaction for all involved. The Hall of Fame supports the mission of Immaculate Conception High School which is to educate and transform students into young women of competence, compassion, and commitment in a Catholic Felician-Franciscan tradition of leadership and service. Candidates are eligible through six categories: alumnae, alumnae athletes, educator, parents (current student or of an alumna), merit, and community leader/friend of ICHS. Please visit our website www.ichslodi.org for more information. In addition to the Hall of Fame, ICHS awards the prestigious Women of Distinction Honor. Please call Nadine Mooers for more information about these awards.
