Renu Solar is working with the Ingane Yami Chil-dren’s Village in Shon-gweni and the Lungisasa Indlela Village (LIV) in

Verulum to reduce their reliance on Eskom.The requirement was to provide enough hot water, around 200L, for each of the three homes oc-cupied by the one mother and six children living in each home.

System efficiencyThe company fitted two 110 litres non-pressure solar water heaters per home, plumbed in parallel, to provide system efficiency and take advantage of the Eskom re-bate. The thermosyphon systems have no working parts, and the fact that they are no-pressure, or gravity systems, will also reduce water consumption.

Solar Water HeatingA SESSA (Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa) member’s corporate social outreach programme is delivering hot water and electricity savings to two underprivileged communities in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

A 200 litre electric geyser containing a 4kW element supplying hot water to that number of people would probably run for 4 to 5 hours a day, giving a total of 20kWh. Depending on the price charged per kW, realistically as-sume R1 for the purposes of the calculation, means that each home would be ‘spending’ approx R20 a day, R600 a month or R7 200 a year on electricity to heat their water. At Lungisasa Indlela where there are 15 homes, the ‘saving’ amounts to about R108 000 a year while at Ingane Yami, where there are three homes, over R21 500.

Abey Mamaregane of LP Architects recently spoke to “Skills On Site”

Finding identity“Once you’ve established the footprint you can look at aesthetics and greening elements, such as bringing in natural light-ing to save on electrical comsunption,” he explains. “You have to ask yourself: ‘What does this building want to be?’“Sometimes I’ll be driving around when I see something and know that it’s what the building needs; then it’s just a matter of in-terpreting it architecturally, as we did with the hats at Jabulani.”

Design within designHe adds that it’s important to remember that a shopping centre must be designed to draw not only shoppers but also tenants who create the fabric of the centre. “You need to look at the storefronts and what would work to attract shoppers to the centre,” he continues. “National chain stores often have their own design criteria – we need to work

with them to form a cohesive environment. The theme of the centre is shared with the tenant design through our design criteria document, which explains the intended look of the project.

“Each tenant has their own language or interpretation of what they want to see, de-pending on their identity and the products they sell. It’s necessary to maintain a design

What happened?On the 25th October 2011 at approximately 12h00 the tyre team were busy mounting a new tyre on 992G (LDR 14) in the workshop. The supervisor instructed the forklift operator to push the bead in on one side while an employee was standing on the opposite side pushing the locking ring into position with his hand. During this process, the outer

Finger Pinched During Tyre Replacement

SAFETY ALERT

What caused it?The injured persons hand was in the wrong place, therefore the spring effect of the steel locking pin and outer flange caused the pinching effect. Use of a forklift for this work may be contrary to manu-facturer’s recommendations. After fitting the locking ring, the tyre should be inflated inside a tyre cage.

Corrective and preventative actions

Ensure that all personnel involved take part in the

recommendations for this task and incorporate in the revision. When completed and approved, all tyre team personnel need to be trained in safe work procedures.

Those ContractsIn the interest of keeping our readers up-to-date and informed of the latest employment law related issues, Nico Pienaar, director for Aggregate and Sand Producers Association (Aspasa) and Southern African Readymix Association (Sarma) writes a short monthly column for “Skills On Site” that deals with practical labour issues at the workplace.

LEGAL EAGLE

Let’s this month stand still and look at the contract of employment a bit more in detail. In industry these documents are often referred to as letters of appointments.

If often happens that a person starts at a workplace and no written contract is produced. In other words, people would say there is no contract. This is not true. The law does not say it has to be in writing.

Two people turned upMany years ago the writer had to deal with a case

It is therefore so important that this written agreement is sorted out before the individual actually pitches up for work.It often happens that once a person has started, that they then don’t want to sign the letter, contract or agreement.The BCEA is clear what must go into such an agreement:

The full name and address of the employer The name and occupation of the employee, or a brief description of the work for which the employee is employed The place of work and where the employee is re-quired or permitted to work at various places, and indication of this

The date on which the employment began The employee’s ordinary hours of work and days of work The employee’s wage or the rate and method of calculating wages The rate of pay for overtime work Any other cash payment that the employee is entitled to Any payment in kind that the employee is entitled to and the value of the payment in kind How frequently remuneration will be paid Any deductions to be made from the employee’s remuneration The leave to which the employee is entitled. Corobrik’s Building Training School, based at the Corobrik Landsdowne Centre in Cape Town is offering a training course, sponsored by the Department of Labour.

Ismail Rothman, Corobrik’s training co-ordinator, is passionate about seeing learners succeed. He says, “On 23 April, we started a course for the department of Public Works – 25 learners will be trained over
