One of the leaders of this su- per talented baseball team has been Daniel Ca- labretta, a Duke University signee and one of the top players in the area. Daniel began his baseball career at the age of five playing T-ball and has had a love and passion for the game ever since. Daniel has worked hard from the time he started playing all the way through his senior year and has earned the opportunity to play baseball at the collegiate level. The 18 year old has been supported and encouraged throughout the years by his parents Art and Angie Calabretta to help him get where he is today. It didn’t take Daniel long to decide he want- ed to play college baseball. At the age of 12, he started playing travel ball and ever since then it has been his dream to take baseball a step further and aim for college level baseball. Travel ball marked the beginning of the young athlete’s inner- drive to succeed and reach his dream of college baseball. Over the years Daniel has played school ball along with club ball with the South Charlotte Panthers. As a senior, his job has been to be a role model to the underclassmen and a leader for the rest of the team. Daniel says he will remember his time at Weddington as “having tons of fun winning state championships and bonding with teammates.” Winning back-to-back state championships is among one of Daniel’s top three athletic accomplishments in his baseball career. In 2012, the Warriors de- feated Aycock High School to earn the state championship title for the first time in Weddington baseball history. In the 2013 state championship three-game series against DH Conely High School, Daniel was awarded the Most Valuable Player award as a junior, where he finished the third game by hitting for the cycle. In baseball, hitting for the cycle is an accom- plishment of the batter recording a single, a double, a triple, and a home run all in the same game. After a 12-5 win to open the title series, and then a loss of 7-6 in game two, Daniel’s outstanding performance is exactly what the team needed to pull them through with another successful state championship win. Daniel finished the three game series with 3 RBI’s (runs batted in), eight runs, two stolen bases, two walks, and recorded hits in 8 of the 12 at bats. Not only is Daniel successful on the field, his classroom performance is just as impres- sive. With a 4.7 GPA, Daniel has had to learn to balance his schoolwork with baseball so that he could be successful in both. Daniel admits that balancing school and baseball is difficult and still has homework to complete after an exhausting practice, but academics are his first priority. In school, Daniel is also a member of the Beta Club and the National Spanish Honor Society. In his spare time, he enjoys play- ing the bass guitar for fun. Top performance and hard work in the classroom and on the field are what ultimately earned Daniel the opportunity to play college baseball for Duke University. When asked what led him to choose Duke, Daniel says, “they were the first school to offer a spot and with Duke being in the ACC and a top academic program, I pounced on the offer.” Columbia University was also in the running, however it wasn’t a difficult decision for Daniel to know that Duke is the place for him. The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates Daniel Calabretta on his success at Weddington High School academically and athletically and wish him the very best in the future at Duke University. It didn’t take Daniel long to decide he want-ed to play college baseball. FOR COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP OVER & ABOVE THE CALL OF DUTY

January – Hunter Orloff (Marvin Ridge) February – Ethan Traub (Marvin Ridge) March – Harper Hendricks (Community House) April – James Gale (Weddington)

Marvin Ridge Senior Jessica Curtis has de-veloped into a great student in the classroom and player on the softball field. The 18 year old daughter of Christopher and Bobbi Curtis is finishing up her final season with Marvin Ridge but will continue her softball career at Greensboro College. She has worked hard to be able to play her favorite sport in college, but still finds time for work and serving her com-munity. Let’s learn more about Jessica Curtis as we go Beyond The Game.

How long have you been playing softball and what position do you play?“I have been playing softball since I was 8 years old. I played for PCAA on a rec team. I began to fall in love with the sport. I am now a pitcher and a third baseman.”

What is your favorite athletic memory?

“My favorite athletic memory is in my junior year, playing against a confer-ence rival I hit 2 homeruns and a stand up double in the game.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“My first athletic accomplishment was making All-Confer-ence, All-District, and All-State in my sophomore year as a high school varsity player. My second athletic accom-plishment would be playing in a tournament on the North Carolina Tar Heels softball field and hitting a homerun. My third athletic accomplishment was this year when I chose to play college softball and fulfill my dream.”

Describe your softball experience at Marvin Ridge.“I have played for Marvin Ridge varsity softball since I was a sophomore. Sophomore year I played under Coach Kevin Allran. He asked me if I could play right field, “I told him I hadn’t played that position but I could try and would be willing to play anywhere he needed me.” I played right field as a starter and batted 5th in the lineup as a power hitter. After all the laughs and fun we had that year he told us he wouldn’t be returning as head coach and would in-stead be moving into the Athletic Director position. Junior year we wondered what would happen and who would take over. We were very excited to learn Coach Heather Carnes would be our head coach as she was a former softball player herself and could relate to us. I played third base as a junior and batted 4th in the lineup as a clean-up hitter. We made it to the fourth round which was semi-fi-nals for states. Still being coached under Coach Carnes I am in my senior year at Marvin Ridge. I am pitching and playing 3rd base. This year has been a very emotional and stressful year for our team. Myself and my teammates are trying to give the season our best and try to focus one game at a time. And it’s not finished yet as we move into states this week. I can’t wait to see how far we go but no matter what I will be very proud of each and every girl on my team and the memories we created.”

How did you end up choosing Greensboro College for softball? “I actually decided to play for Greensboro College not too long ago. I know I made the right decision and I am excited to play at the collegiate level. In the summer going into my senior year I was recognized by assistant Coach Chip in a tournament in Rock Hill SC. I went on an official visit and loved the campus. I am more than blessed and excited to play under Coach Whitney Gelin. Ever since my visit when I was staying in the dorm rooms hanging out with the team I had something in the back of my mind tell-ing me it was going to be my new home for the next four years. However, I continued to go through the recruiting process with several colleges to make sure I weighed all of

the pros and cons of each one. I am very excited about Greensboro College, Coach Gelin, and to see what my future holds.”

What are your top academic and community service related achievements to date?“My academic achievements are making A/B honor roll multiple times throughout high school and receiving a 27 on my ACT. My grades and my scores allowed me to get accepted to all seven of the colleges I applied to for early admission. I have made myself proud and I have kept my parents proud and happy as I learned to balance sports, work and friends throughout high school.”

“I have completed community service hours throughout the years and try to find ways to give back. One of my prouder moments and the reason my mom is such a good role model in my life is we both have a gift for helping people in need. For example, about 2 years ago we helped a homeless man who had all the faith in the world he just needed a little push to get a job, someone to believe in him again and to help him get in front of the right people. He was a man of God and believed every step of the way that he would prove himself if given the chance. He landed a job my mom and her team helped him find and has been out of the shelter living a healthy life. He continues to reach out to thank us for all we have done still to this day. I have learned true success comes not only in the classroom or on the softball field but also by believing and giving to others.”

Charlotte Christian football player Jackson VanSickle has kicked his way to the top of the national charts for his profession. The son of Eric and Laura VanSickle is one of the top kickers in the country. His leg has become a big time weapon for Coach Jason Estep and the Knights. Jackson and his teammates will open the 2014 football season in Memorial Stadium with a game against another state champion, Mallard Creek. Let’s go Beyond The Game and learn more about Jackson VanSickle.

When did you begin kicking and why?“I started kicking for fun when I was in second or third grade. I had a rubber Old Navy football. I would put it on top of a cone and kick it in my backyard. When I got to middle school I tried out for the football team. I was a wide receiver, a cornerback, and the kicker. When I got to high school I decided I wanted to focus on kicking full time. I love kicking. It’s my favorite way to spend my time.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“I was blessed to be named NCISAA All-State and All-Conference kicker and punter last season. I was also named First Team South Charlotte and Second Team Mecklenburg County. Another great accomplishment was winning a State Championship with my team at Charlotte Christian last year.”

What is your farthest field goal made?“In practice my longest field goal was 60 yards. Last season I hit two 46 yarders in a game.”

Do you also punt?“Yes. Actually, I think that’s turned into one my greatest strengths. I’ve devel-oped into a very strong punter. I have the ability to consistently hit 45-plus-yard punts with a 4.5 hang time. So I really consider myself a strong combo kicker.”

Do you play any other sports?“No. I used to play soccer, but I left that last year to focus full-time on kicking.”

Is there a soccer background that led to your kicking?“Yes, my father played D1 soccer at Boston University so I grew up in a soccer family. I played soccer long before I started kicking quit this year to focus full-time on kicking, but we still go out and play some soccer with our family when we get a chance.”

Who are your kicking coaches?“I have to attribute a big part of my success to the incredible coaches I’ve been fortunate to work with. My kicking coach Dan Orner is the best there is. I am also incredibly blessed to be at Charlotte Christian and work with Coach Jason Estep and John Kasay, who kicked in the NFL for 21-years. Sometimes I can’t be-lieve how blessed I am to have such good people as teachers and mentors. I feel very lucky.”

Where are you at as far as recruiting interests, are there any certain schools you really like?“Several schools have expressed interest in me including East Carolina, Uni-versity of South Carolina, University of Miami, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, UConn, William and Mary, Coastal Carolina, Louisville, and Mississippi State. I have visited several of the campuses and feel like these are all great schools. At this point, I’m keeping my options open.”

Your brother is a kicker as well?“Yes, He was a freshman at Marvin Ridge this year. Last year he played in the East Bay All-American Youth game in San Antonio. We kick a lot together on the weekends. Next year we’ll get to work out every day since he will be joining me over at Charlotte Christian.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “School work is always a priority for me. Right now I have a 3.4 GPA.”

Freshman Tory Wilkison has worked very hard to become the starting goalie for the Charlotte Latin Girls’ Soccer Team. The 15 year old daughter of Tim and Vicky Wilkison dedicates most of her time to playing soccer for her high school and club team, but is still able to perform well in the classroom. Her determination to succeed has helped her to become a phenomenal soccer player and we can ex-pect to see great things from her in the future. Let’s go Beyond The Game with Tory Wilkison.

How long have you been playing soccer and when did you become serious about the sport?

“I have been playing soccer ever since I was little on intramural teams, but I was not very good. And then in the 5th grade I started to play for Charlotte United Futbol Club. As I improved, soccer started to become important to me. I became serious about it when I was about 11 years old.”

What is your favorite memory from playing soccer?“My favorite memory from playing soccer was in the 8th grade, my club team was at a tournament. On Saturday, it was perfect weather, but on Sunday it was rainy, freezing, and miserable. We had played full games on Saturday, but on Sunday they needed to finish the tournament and it was too wet to play full games so they did a penalty kick shootout for the semi-finals and finals. I’m a goalie, so I was pretty terrified about the whole thing. I remember my coach making me “warm-up” by div-ing on the freezing, wet ground. That was miserable. But I guess it was worth it considering we won the tournament.”

What are your top three athletic achievements?“Making the Charlotte Latin Varsity team and being the goalie. Making my club team this year because there were more goalies trying out than teams, and I ended up being the only goalie on my team. Finally, scoring a goal when I played in the field. I broke my thumb and was unable to play in goal for a long time, and I played on the field for my club team at a tournament and scored a goal. I had never played on the field for club, so as you can imagine I was very proud.”

How do you balance your time between soccer and school?“I stay up late studying and work over the weekends. I also try to fit homework/studying into my school days and while waiting for my games or practices to start.”

How important to you is it to succeed in school?“It is very important to me to succeed in school. Getting a good education will take you very far in life, it gives you the ability to be able to do whatever you want with your life.”

How do you perform in school? “I am a solid student and I work hard to get good grades. I also sing in the chorus at Latin, which I love.”

Can you describe your experience playing for Charlotte Latin?“It has been so much fun and a whole new level for me. I have played club, but the teams we play against at Charlotte Latin have some very strong and skilled players. Playing at this level allows me to grow as a goalie, because I have to make smarter plays, I can’t second guess myself. Also playing with my teammates has helped me grow into a better keeper. They are all very skilled and know what they are doing. They are not afraid to tell me when I am doing something wrong. They help me learn from my mistakes and I am so happy I have teammates as skilled as they are because they have helped me become a more confident player.”

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t playing soccer?“I love hanging out with my friends and going to my youth group at Forest Hill Church. But, to be honest I don’t have that much free time.”
