CAITLIN MILES

Neighbours to Addington Park are angry that city council chief executive Karleen Edwards is yet to make a decision on whether she will immediately suspend freedom camping at Addington Park.

The Southern View has lobbied on behalf of residents for the city council to address prob-lems of freedom camping at the park since January, after reports of overcrowding and sanitary problems including an incident of a camper defecating on the playground swings.

This resulted in the Spreydon-

Heathcote Community Board requesting Dr Edwards to imme-diately close the park to freedom campers.

Dr Edwards has the power to do this under part 10 of the freedom camping bylaw, if it is deemed necessary.

But a city council spokeswom-an said no decision has been made about suspending freedom camping in Addington Park and there was no set time frame for Dr Edwards to make a decision.

City councillor Phil Clearwa-ter said he understood Dr Ed-ward was collecting legal advice and opinions from advisers.

But residents around the park

say the situation is getting worse – and they want a decision made now.

Bruce McNabb, who lives next door said there are now tents everywhere and damage is occurring.

Since last reported in the

Southern View, four more complaints have been laid with the city council which included shopping trolleys left in the park, a female camper was in the men’s toilet area, there was no parking for others and the number of people in the area was a nuisance.

“It’s getting worse. It’s awful there’s rubbish everywhere, no one else can use the park. The city council needs to hurry up with their decision,” Mr McNabb said.

But councillor Phil Clearwater says it’s not that easy.

He wants a temporary closure of Addington Park to non-self

contained vehicles.“The city council is very

aware of the issue and has a strong interest in the bylaw.”

Cr Clearwater said they had to consider the impact closing one area would have on other freedom camping areas.

“If you ban them from there all those people will end up going to other areas, so we need to look at how an influx will impact those areas too,” he said.

Schools in the Cashmere area are on high alert after on two separate occasions children were approached by strangers asking if they wanted a ride to school.

On Wednesday “several chil-dren” from Cashmere Primary School were approached by a man in a car on the green near Dyers Pass Rd asking if the children would like a ride to school.

The following day a child was approached by a vehicle on their way to school near the same area on Dyers Pass Rd.

Cashmere Primary principal Gavin Burn said they don’t have a clear description of the man but are working with po-lice to gather information.

He said police had told him they were unsure if the two inci-dents were related.

Somerfield School, St Martins School and Thorrington School have not had any incidents but have sent emails to families

telling them to be extra vigilant and discuss safety travelling to school.

“The teachers are giving safety messages to the children in class and we’re making sure everyone is vigilant, we have nothing to report but we’re

sharing the message so people are aware,” said Somerfield School principal Denise Torrey (right).

Mr Burn sent out an email to

parents and families follow-ing the incident on Wednesday as well asking parents and children to be wary and walk in groups to school.

The police are investigating and have asked the community to stay alert.

Schools on high alert after stranger danger

WARNING: Cashmere Primary School is asking children and parents to report anything suspicious to the school or police.

City councillor Tim Scandrett says there is too much destruction and mess left around the Port Hills as a result of boy racers abusing the area, and he wants to see the Summit Rd and surrounding land protected.

I have been really pleased with the huge support for proposals to protect the Summit Rd (below) and the Port Hills in general. I have been working with several groups on a solution to the issues of damage to the environment, council and private property

in this area for some time. It is really wonderful to hear how much people value this space and want it protected for all to enjoy.

Currently this area is be-ing compromised by a small minority. I have been contacted by cyclists, walkers, picnick-ers, photographers and families all who enjoy the recreational opportunities this unique area offers. Certainly any proposals are not to restrict these activi-ties.

We cannot put the amenities required into this area due to vandalism. Each weekend Port Hill’s rangers have to clean up huge amounts of litter and broken glass and repair fences and gates. This is all a cost to

Christchurch ratepayers and a detraction from the area. There are huge fire risks from some of the activities undertaken. A fire at the Bellbird late last year could easily have set the Port Hills alight.

Clearly we need to find a plan that is backed by legisla-tion to protect this area. There is no easy fix but by working together with the groups in-volved I do believe we can put in place a plan which will en-sure we can all enjoy the Port Hills in the way we wish to.

The Port Hills is a jewel in Christchurch’s environmental crown. It is a place for us all to enjoy. We want to protect our environmental treasure.

If, as an off shoot of this the antisocial behaviour of car enthusiasts is stopped then this is an added benefit for the community.

Have your say: What do you think? Is he right or should boy racers be free to go where they please like other road users. Email [email protected]

Amy Whalley reponded to an article on Gordon Rudd moni-toring the water quality of the Cashmere stream, she had this to say about the water quality around her area.

Amy Whalley: I used to enjoy walking around the river in Wainoni (Porritt Park) but now I drive elsewhere to go for walks as the river is in such a poor state. It is dirty, the banks have fallen in and there is no flow of water. It seems the city council is pro-moting the lovely green border and living alongside the river in town (where they have done the beautifying) but they don’t care about the residents who are trying to live in post-quake Christchurch and get on with life.

After facing an uncertain future, Addington’s busy community hub Manuka Cottage could be the first occupant in a brand new $500,000 city council facility.

The city council has planned to build a community facility on Cornelius O’Connor Reserve, Harman St, Addington.

Manuka Cottage will be the first occupant, should the facility get the go-ahead. The project is currently out for consultation to the public.

Its future has been hanging in the balance since the cot-tage had to move to St Mary’s Church in 2012 due to earth-quake insurance issues. Many of its programmes have been on hold due to this.

About half the park will be used for the site, with the build-ing set back in the south-east corner.

The building will consist of a large central room, three smaller rooms for offices. The kitchen plans to have large windows to open onto and service an outdoor area.

The main entrance will face Harman St and have large slid-ing doors facing the park with a path linking Harman St to the building and through Harman Courts.

Manuka Cottage manager, Cherylan Davies said there had been a lot of discussion around a good location for Manuka Cottage and the reserve was perfect as it was green space and greatly under utilised.

“It’s an awesome space, very central, it will be such an asset to Addington,” she said.

The temporary location at St Mary’s Church has meant some programmes have had to stop running because of issues with space.

“Once we have our own place it will be nice to get more pro-grammes up and running again,” Ms Davies said.

There is no secret to

Firstly happy 100th birthday Eve! It’s quite a milestone isn’t it?

Oh yes it is, I can’t believe I’m celebrating this with all of these people, my friends and my family. It was such a surprise, I didn’t know anything was planned until I came down at lunch time and

saw it on the notice board. It’s so lovely.

Shall we start from the beginning Eve, tell me about where you were born and grew up?

Well I had two siblings, Grace who was 10 years older and Olive who was about five years older, but she died before I came along. When I was six my

father moved us up to Taranaki because he wanted to go back to farming, he always loved farm-ing so we moved. I loved living in Taranaki. I’ll always be a farm girl. I grew up on a cattle farm, there were no sheep up there in that day.

Did you have to help round the farm?

Oh yes of course I did. When I was helping out on the farm I had to go feed the calves in the morning and I was always so scared of them, so I would go running into the paddock and they’d all come chasing after me because I had their milk. I never learnt to stop running and just give them the milk.

Did you get to keep one of the farm animals as a pet?

Yes I did, one year the sow had one too many piglets, so I got to

keep one as a pet. The wee thing travelled around with me every-where, I used to push it around all over the place in a baby carriage. I never seemed to mind.

Did you go to any dances when you were a teenager Eve?

Well I still lived in the country, it was a great life . . . but I went to dances all the time. Would stay out until 3am usually.

You seem like quite the party goer.

It was normal back then. There would be an orchestra, not always a full one but they’d play music until the wee hours. We would have supper around 11pm and then keep dancing. I went out with a lot of the boys because they were all my dancing partners and I loved to go dancing.

Is that how you met your husband? Out dancing?

Oh no. He wasn’t a dancer, Bruce never liked dancing. He was a friend of a friend, we had some of the same friends and would all go out as a group. One day he saw me and thought he’d like to date me so we started dat-ing.

Did he get jealous of the boys you were dancing with?

Eve Riley was born on March 2, 1916 and grew up in Opawa. Last week she celebrated her 100th birthday. She spoke with Caitlin Miles about going to dances until 3am, being chased after by boys and calves and still acting on stage at age 71.

longevity for Eve – ‘I just lived’

EARLY DAYS: Eve was in her early 20s when she got married and had her first child.

Well I don’t think so, because they were only my dancing partners.

What was that like, growing up during the war?

Being in the country I didn’t have much to do with it. I knew it was going on of course but it didn’t impact me. Even when Bruce and I were married it still didn’t seem real. It wasn’t happening here.

When did you get married? It was before the war . . . I got

married when I was 20, and had my first child, Margaret, when I was 21. And then Bruce had to move down to Wellington because he was in the Home Guard.

Did you not move down with him?

Oh no, not at first. He only had the odd day off and I had a baby to look after so I was pretty busy.

You were raising him on your own?

Well again that’s just what you did back then. It wasn’t a big deal, we did fine, but then I decided we would move to Wel-lington, Bruce having the odd day off was okay for me, better

to see him now and then than never at all.

Did you work after you moved down to Wellington?

Yes, when I moved down there I decided to become a librarian. I always wanted to be one because I loved books. So I studied and got a degree to become a librarian and I got a job at Onslow College, in the library. That was a very special library, there were so many books. The headmaster walked past one day and saw me tak-ing classes in the library and he said why don’t you become a teacher? So all of the teach-ers from the college helped me to get my qualifications. I was never officially qualified though, but I taught there for quite a long time.

What did you teach?Oh I can’t remember that.

You’re making me pull up a lot of old memories here, I am 100.

You had two other children is that right?

Yes. I had Margaret then Al-lan six years later then Ruth six years after that.

So when you weren’t busy raising a child and teaching

what hobbies did you have?I did a lot of acting. It was

all amateur stuff, we were very keen on the theatre. Even when I moved back down to Christ-church I got to do some acting in the Town Hall, I was 71. I loved Shakespeare, I did a lot of Shakespeare. All the usual amateur stuff that people do.

When did you decide to move down to Christchurch?

The children had grown up by then. We moved down to be with my son Allan and his wife Ruth, Allan was away on business quite a lot so we moved down to help her out and sup-port her.

What did you do when you moved back down here?

Well I helped out for the Cancer Society for years, just volunteering, nothing special about that. That’s how I met my second husband, Bob. My first, Bruce passed away 30 odd years ago.

Tell me a little about Bob.There’s not much to tell re-

ally, we met volunteering for the Cancer Society and became close friends. We’d been friends for many years, and then we

were both alone. We just got on so well and we were so close we decided to get married.

Well Eve you’ve had a wonderful life it would seem,

what’s your secret on making it too 100?

Nothing. I don’t have a secret. I just lived. That’s the main thing. You just have to live.

Cashmere High School’s NCEA results for 2015 are simply the best ever for our school. Our pass rates (i.e. levels of achievement) across all year levels (Years 11-13), literacy and numeracy, and University Entrance results are all above national benchmarks

and above the average for all decile 8-10 schools.

As a school, we benchmark against the top 8-10 decile schools, which includes all private schools, and our school’s comparative pass rates are better across all areas of NCEA.

School awarded major environmental prize

Cashmere High School is delighted and honoured to win the Zayed Future Energy Prize for 2016 in the Global High Schools category.

The worldwide award was presented at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to our school delega-tion comprising Leith Cooper (Lead Teacher) and student representatives Nola Smart and Lily Williams.

There were a record 1437 entries from 97 countries, with projects focused on environmental sustainability and renew-able energy. With this award our school wins US$100,000 to further develop and implement our sustainable energy project called “ecoDriver”.

Begun in 2012, ecoDriver is student focused and aims to reduce energy use and develop energy efficient practices. It has involved installing smart meters

providing real-time data on energy use, a “Switch Off” campaign, and replace-ment of 50% of fluorescent blubs with LED lights.

The prize funds will be used to extend our ecoDriver project in the school through installing solar panels, a wind-turbine and piezoelectric floor tiles.

Our Head Students for 2016, pictured with Principal Mark Wilson, centre, are: Lockie Hooft (Head Boy), Emma Loughnan (Deputy Head Girl), Paris Thornley (Head Girl) and Lennox Tait (Deputy Head Boy).

Once again our Year 10 students have attained outstanding results in their Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) subjects.

Each year our school offers our top streamed Year 10 classes the exten-sion option of studying IGCSE sub-ject qualifications from the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

Our school is also delighted to be able to congratulate Saoirse Hill-Shearman

on being awarded the Top in Country (first in NZ) award in the subject of Global Perspectives for 2015.

Cashmere’s success in the international Future Problem Solving (FPS) Competition continues with four of our students win-ning New Zealand titles at the national finals hosted in Auckland at the end of 2015.

Niamh Hollis-Locke, Campbell Wright, Hannah Hudson and Pieter Leigh all won their respective categories in FPS, and are eligible to represent New Zealand at the FPS International Finals hosted in the USA later this year.

The Education Review Office (ERO) has released its lat-est National Report on Internal Evaluation: Good Practice, con-taining case studies of schools identified as having strong self-review systems.

The idea is to collate and share such good practice nationally for

the benefit of other schools. In the report our school is includ-

ed as a case study, specifically using our “Learning Walks” model as a method for building teach-ers’ professional capacity. This is an excellent national acknowl-edgement and endorsement of our school’s self-review systems.

Gaining your NCEA qualification is the key for opening up future opportunities, such as study in tertiary institutions.

Percentage of students who gained NCEA with 50 or more credits with Merit or Excellence. Increasingly tertiary institutions and employers are requiring these NCEA Endorsements in their process of selecting the best students and awarding financial scholarships at universities.

NCEA achievement results: Pass Rates for Level 1 to 3 for 2015

Cashmere High School was again one of the leading schools with our students attaining 28 individual subject Scholarships in the NZ Scholarship

Awards. Our congratulations to these top

scholars, and all our students who worked diligently to achieve their best.

NCEA results ‘simply the best’

The Cashmere Junior Theatresports Team, comprising Pieter Leigh, Jedd Hawker, Jorja Farrant and Spencer Hayes, won the South Island Schools Competition at the end of 2015.

The competition requires teams to perform scenes and games based on audience suggestions, scored by a judging panel. This junior win followed on our school’s senior team winning their competition in Term 3, 2015 – meaning we achieved “The Double” with an impressive clean sweep of the Theatresports School Championship titles.

A key reason for our consistently high

achievement is the strong mentoring of our juniors by our senior students, and ongoing support from our Drama teachers.

Dietary fibre is made up of three types and each play a different role throughout the digestive tract. It’s often a

case of balancing them all and not only supplementing with just one. To ensure

Digestive health is becoming increasingly important for improving our overall wellbeing. As there is a distinct connection between our tummy and our

moods, immunity and even our behaviours, it pays to follow your gut if you feel out of sorts with

these nutritional enhancer

you get enough fibre in your diet: women should aim for 25 grams to 30 grams and men 30 grams to 38 grams each day. Soluble fibre are found in oats, psyllium, vegetables, fruits with their skin on and supplements like Metamucil. Insoluble

fibre can be found in wheat bran pasta and quinoa. Resistant starch is contained in cold cooked pasta, potatoes and firm, fresh bananas.

Probiotics and prebiotic foods can help keep the correct pH balance(acidity to alkalinity) in our intestines. These ‘good’ bacteria assist with breaking down fibre in the bowel and produce healthy stool movements. Probiotics can be found in supplements, cultured yoghurt, kombucha

drinks and fermented vegetables. Prebiotic foods are Jerusalem artichokes and raw garlic, leeks and onions.

Poor gut health could be caused by, but not limited to, high stress levels, caffeine, smoking or inadequate water consumption. If you suffer from prolonged periods of reflux, constipation, diarrhoea or cramping and nausea, seek medical advice. Your doctor may help identify possible intolerances or allergies.

The features on a person’s face can change or determine how they are perceived, and we are all subconsciously affected by these

cues. Every time we see a face, we make judgments on that person’s character and personality, and all this happens instantly and automatically in our brains.

Years spent talking, chewing, pouting, smoking or smiling can lead to lines and wrinkles around the lips. Lip fullness can also be an indicator of aging, as time spent biting or pursing the lips can lead to deflated, thin lips over time. Lips are also especially vulnerable to environmental effects, as the skin on the lips is less than a third of the thickness of the skin on the rest of your face.

Many women really want to improve

the appearance of their lips but are understandably very scared about looking like a duck, especially after the all too common publicised disasters affecting some unfortunate celebrities. These days we all recognise women are looking for a natural appearance rather than looking like a “Kardashian”.

Dermal fillers for the lips are one of the most popular cosmetic medicine treatments available, and are a very quick and easy way to dramatically improve your look. They typically last between 12 – 14 months, and are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, meaning the risk of adverse reactions to the procedure is very, very small. Recovery time is usually around1 day.

There are generally 3 types of requests for lip fillers at Koru Clinic, clients who want to

1. Boost Lip Volume2. Minimise smokers lines 3. Define the lip border & reduce

lipstick bleedYounger patients tend to go for larger

lip volumes, whilst more mature women want a more natural lip augmentation .

At Koru Clinic we only recommend using hyaluronic acid based fillers with high safety profiles, and after assessing each persons lips will decide on the most appropriate filler for the augmentation.

Dr Jefferies is a cosmetic Physician working at Koru Clinic. Call 372 3589 for an appointment to chat about a lip augmentation.

B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair, and prevention

of homocysteine - a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease in risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+ who were supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their 60s who were low in B12.

The reason so many people lack B12 seems to be due to our body’s inability to absorb it as we age, as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption.

The good news is B12, in the form of methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract, have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body.

You can boost circulation to help blood back to your heart – without strenuous exercise. An Aircycle can help pump the blood.

Working the calf muscles with a “treadle” action, just like the old sewing machines, is the key. The Aircycle “treadle” exercise assists the calf pump mechanism.

According to Dr Matthew Parsons, “Anyone on diuretics with the problem of fluid retention and anyone sitting with legs down for any length of time may be helped by using this exerciser.”

“My swollen ankles have reduced and I can now sleep without pain,” Alex Simmonds said. “And my night cramps have gone!”

“Since using the Aircycle, my diabetic ulcer has healed and all the pain gone. My toes have stopped tingling and getting sore ,” Richard Leighton shared.

Aircycle exercises also strengthen leg muscles and relieve arthritic pain. Keeping your legs moving is not just good for your heart. It will help you remain mobile and independent.

Aircycles are available in pharmacies. For information and orders, visit the website www.aircycle.co.nz or call 04 569 5013.

“Treadle” for your heart

While walking is great for a healthy heart, there is another way to exercise which anyone can do, sitting

comfortably in front of TV.

Emerging research has shown as many as 50 per cent of older adults and as many as 25 per cent of younger adults

are deficient in vitamin B12.

With eight clinics throughout Christchurch, there are hundreds of people who can now eat, talk and smile with complete assurance,

thanks to the team at Duchenne Dental.

Their talented clinical and technical teams believe in providing advanced denture care so that their patients can leave with dentures

that feel comfortable, look perfectly natural and are suitably secure.

They use current, state-of-the-art technology. So whether you need full or partial dentures, replacements or brand new, they will create dentures that are a precise fit for you. They combine digital scanning technology and injection moulding techniques with hand crafting

to make sure that their patients leave them with dentures that won’t cause ongoing painful ulcers or slip in their mouths. Their kind and encouraging service leaves their customers, “feeling like a celebrity...and their follow up care is exceptional.” Some clients turn to them in desperation but leave feeling “transformed”.

If you want to eat, talk and smile with confidence, phone 03 375 4444 or visit www.duchenne.co.nz to find the clinic closest to you and book your complimentary consultation.

Heart burn, indigestion, feeling tired often, low energy, gas, constipation or diarrhoea, abdominal

cramps, frequent urination, oral thrush (white coated tongue), sore throat, fungal skin infections and rashes, jock itch and chronic disease among others are just some of the common symptoms.

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. Around 70 per cent of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin.

It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is kept under control by the good gut bacteria or probiotics that feed on this yeast. However, using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid and medications are some of the factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the Candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall overtime, causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the blood stream, often leading to

food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma.

The Candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain, it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic microorganism or virus that’s form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in cancer and other chronic health conditions. However, it is the body’s weakened immune system and toxic environment that is the real cause of disease.

Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. To cleanse Candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months.

The natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and its fungus from the body, and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Visit them at 110 Seaview Rd, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!
