A community board member has described the plight of people with disabilities trying to park in the south of the city as “hilarious”.

“If you didn’t laugh you’d cry,” said Spreydon-Heathcote Com-munity Board member Karolin Potter.

Over the past three weeks, she and fellow community board member Helene Mautner have visited every cluster of shops in the ward, looking at the disability parking spaces.

They found problems at more than 20 centres and shopping ar-

eas, including Barrington, Adding-ton and Colombo St.

Problems include parks which are too narrow for a driver with a disability to get out of their vehicle, high curbs with no ramp access for wheelchairs, and ramps which are too steep.

They were particularly con-cerned about parking at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, where there are two disabled car parks near the back entrance, and three at the front.

The parks at the back are close to an entrance, but Ms Potter said the parks at the front were more than 100m away. • Turn to page 5

Hillmorton High School students have had the chance to work one-to-one with some of their music idols this term.

Frontman of New Zealand rock band Shihad, Jon Toogood, and Dave Dobbyn’s house band member Mark Vanilau spent three weeks working with se-nior music students at the school.

They worked with the stu-

dents to help them develop their NCEA compositions.

Deputy principal Eleanor Sim said it was very rewarding for the students to have their work looked over by a fresh set of eyes and ears.

“The reaction of students has been excellent, as they have come out of their shells and related really well to the ad-vice offered. Jon Toogood even played some bass guitar on one student’s recording. That’s some guest spot.”

The Music Mentors pro-gramme is organised by the New Zealand Music Commis-sion.

In previous years former stu-dent Jason Kerrison of Opshop and Julia Deans of Fur Patrol have visited the school through the programme.

“We love the mentoring in schools programme and we always put our hand up for it, and they really seem to enjoy coming here,” Ms Simsaid.

Somerfield resident Gordon McK-ay regularly spends 40 hours work-ing as a coastguard volunteer, on top of his full-time job.

Last week he had his hard work recognised, being named Coast-guard Canterbury Air Patrol Vol-unteer of the Year.

“If you do it for the love you don’t mind it,” Mr McKay said.

He has been involved in coast-guard work since he was a teen-ager.

He learnt to fly through the Brit-ish Royal Air Force, and worked for many years on professional rescue ships in the seas around Eu-rope.

When he moved to New Zealand in 2006, he joined the coastguard four days after he arrived.

“It only took four days and I al-ready missed it,” he said.

He said it was a challenge to ad-just to the New Zealand volunteer coastguard model.

Rescue efforts often take several days, and he said it was sometimes difficult to stop and go back to his job as a project manager for Horn-castle Homes.

“Sometimes I’ll try to take a holiday just to rest. I have a very understanding boss at work who has supported me the whole way through.”

He has a wife and five-year-old daughter, and said it wouldn’t be possible to do the work without his family’s support.

“My daughter calls it “daddy’s

other work”. My wife is rather un-derstanding, but she would much rather I was doing this than going down to the pub for the rugby with the boys.”

Mr McKay has been working to develop aerial drones for search and rescue work, which were used in the search for Christchurch man Peter Crowther, who was lost last year in Arthurs Pass National Park.

The drone found several targets for searchers, including a camou-flaged hunting hide, but the miss-

ing man was never found.Mr McKay has also worked to

help air and water based units work better together.

He said there was a lot of com-munication involved in a rescue operation.

“On the sea you are focused on what is around you, and every-thing’s chugging along at a rate of a few knots. In a plane everything runs so much quicker. It’s much faster paced, very snappy, decision orientated. Up top we can see the whole picture.”

He said he felt the award reflect-ed the work of the whole team.

“Me and my team put a huge amount of effort into this, so it is nice to have that acknowledged.”

Amanda Wallis has won a victory in her battle to make an Addington intersection safer.

The mother-of-four has cam-paigned since April this year to have the intersection of Brougham and Selwyn streets made safer.

She organised a petition and sev-eral workshops over the issue, as well as a protest this month, which was cancelled because of rain.

This month the New Zealand Transport Agency has agreed to make changes to the intersection.

A new, two-phase pedestrian crossing will be installed, with a protected pedestrian island in the middle of the highway.

A right-turning arrow will also be installed for vehicles turning into Selwyn St.

The changes were made public af-ter Wigram MP Megan Woods met with the NZTA to ask it what was happening with the intersection.

“Amanda has put so much en-ergy and so much passion into this issue, and I would like to see staff at NZTA sit down and make an effort to communicate with the commu-nity.”

NZTA traffic and safety manager Tony Spowart was open to the idea.

“The transport agency welcomes any future opportunity to meet with the community to discuss the safety issues at the intersection and the initiatives being planned.”

Hi Kaila, I can immediately tell you’re from the US from your accent.

That’s right, I was born and bred in New York City.

What’s life like there?It’s a little bit like the mov-

ies to be honest. There’s always something amazing going on and the kids are all doing ridiculous

things. I thought it was a great place to grow up. I thought I was street smart growing up, but honestly, when I first came to New Zealand about 10 years ago I had trouble with the simple things like hanging up a clothes line or lighting a fire. I couldn’t tell the difference between a sheep and a goat. A friend once said my intelli-gence goes down with population density when I move around.

Why come to New Zealand?It was a boy who brought me here, actually.

Are you still together?We’re not together any-

more but we are still friends and I am eternally grateful to him for bringing me to this

country.Did you have any plans when you

came?I literally had no

idea what I was going to do when I first came here. I don’t have a simple job title like an accountant or lawyer so I had trouble finding work as someone who was broadly

capable. I had done a whole heap of things before that in the US. My degree was in hotel and restaurant administration. I’ve worked in visual printing, in the wholesale jewellery industry . . . I guess I would call myself a serial entre-preneur. Then I worked in graphic design and for a PR company. I also work for TEDxChristchurch, which is a programme of local events that bring people together to spread ideas. We’ve had events where inspirational speakers speak on a whole heap of subjects.

How was the Ministry of Awe-some founded?

In early 2012, myself and a few like-minded people decided that the city needed support for all the people who were trying, and maybe struggling, to do awe-some things. At our first meeting, which was just me, Vicki Buck, Sam Johnson, and (former Ngai Tahu strategy manager) Sacha McMeeking, we just had a coffee at the Addington Coffee Co-op and signed a mock constitution. In our early days, we would just have dinner with someone rather than having a meeting in an office or something.

What is the Ministry of Awe-some?

We try and open doors for people and help them make con-nections with key people in the city. We run around 70 events each year and have lots of people come along to our meetings. We have hundreds of one-on-ones with

people to offer them support.We basically want to push

people in Christchurch who are entrepreneurial. People shouldn’t think they’re crazy just because they have a crazy idea. What we might see is a computer program-mer turn up at one of our meetings and say they want to get involved in a project, then someone else might say: “Hey, I’m looking for a computer programmer.” We try and foster those serendipitous mo-ments.

Pick one recent success that the ministry has had?

Just recently, we gave a hand to Amy Burke who’s running the Help for the Homeless campaign in Christchurch. We saw what she was doing and called her up and asked if she wanted help run-ning her meetings and putting a structure in place for her organisa-tion. We let them use our office space. We’re helping them get set up as an official organisation. These may seem like small things, but sometimes people don’t know how to do them. There are people trying to do incredible things, but they may have small barriers that stop them from doing what they want to do.

How is it funded?The Ministry of Awesome has

been incredibly lucky to get so much funding. The Canterbury Community Trust has backed us since our beginning. Kiwibank has been a great funder, and so has the city council.

What about your “Coffee and Jam” meetings?

Our meetings are extremely casual, but we now have about 80 people coming each week. And I’m fairly sure they’re not just coming for the free food. The purpose of the meetings is to help people connect with each other. We usually have someone pitch a new project or business in Christchurch, and then afterwards there’s an entrepreneurial educational speaker.

How did you meet people like Vicki Buck and Sam Johnson?

Sam I met through TEDx. But I think we’re all just like-minded

people. Christchurch is a very small place and once you start to tug on the thread that is Christch-urch, you find out it’s connected to the entire city.

What’s an average day in your life?

If there is such a thing? A typi-cal day would be lots of meetings. Something like the Ministry of Awesome is only successful because of the team behind it. It’s a lot of reaching out to random people, whether on Facebook or on the phone. We brought the former mayor of San Francisco down to Christchurch recently. How that happened was I Googled him, cold

called him from the white pages, first spoke to his wife on the phone, then convinced him to come here.

How would you like to see the future of the city develop?

My hope for Christchurch is that we realise the promise that emerged from the rubble. I don’t think that’s a promise of shiny new buildings, but of people who are creative, active, engaged, quirky, interesting, and diverse. We need that kind of reputation as a city. If someone is cutting edge, Christch-urch should be the kind of place that welcomes them.

Do you often travel back to the US?

I do. I’m on the board of the cooking school my mother founded in New York. It’s the oldest natural foods cooking school in the US. It’s called the Natural Gourmet Institute and we have an accredited professional chef training pro-gramme. My family is back in the States which is another reason why I go back and forth so frequently.

Are you a great cook?Actually, no, not really. I’m usu-

ally surrounded by so many people who are fantastic in the kitchen. I’m more of an “eatie,” than a “cookie.”

What are your hobbies?I am a rock climber and a boxer.

I used to be quite a serious boxer in around the year 2000. I had about eight fights and I was ranked second in the US in my category as an amateur. I also try to explore more of the South Island when I can.

There are fifteen staff car parks which are closer to the centre than the front entrance disability parks, as well as designated bike and bus parking.

City council recreation and sports unit manager John Filsell said there had been no written complaints about the location of the parks over the past year, although there had been com-plaints about people parking in them without permits.

He said options for relocat-ing or adding more parks had been reviewed since the issue was raised by the community board.

“We have yet not been able to identify any practical solutions that would allow us to relocate the northern car parks closer to the entrance without significantly impacting traffic flows and facility operation.”

But he said that locations for extra parks near the south en-trance were being looked at.

Dr Mautner said she was disap-pointed by the number of prob-lems they found across the ward.

“Even one bad car park is a disappointment. For people with disabilities, not being able to trav-el around freely has a real impact

on their lives.”Ms Potter said it made a simple

trip to the shops an ordeal.“We met a women at the Cen-

taurus Rd shops who said she had to back onto the pavement from the disabled car parks, because it was too frightening to go up on her wheelchair frontways. It was too steep and she was afraid she’d tip right over.”

CCS Disability Action mobil-ity parking and access adviser BJ Clark said there were similar problems across the city.

“I applaud the community board for highlighting this issue because it’s one where we get a lot of complaints. We have tried me-dia campaigns and we have tried working with the malls to find ways to monitor them, but it con-tinues to be a huge issue.

“Some people have no thought for their fellow man, and they don’t understand what it’s like to be a person with a disability.”

He said the design of the parks was important.

“Having kerb access is just as important as having the marked space.”

The community board has asked for a city council report on car parks to be compiled, with op-tions for fixing the problems.

Once the report is finished, they plan to present it to the city council.

When Pat and Nicola Martin started their Sydenham business Solar Bright, they had no qualifications, no experience, and lim-ited funds.

But they did have ideas and determina-tion.

Seven years later, they are finalists for a New Zealand Innovators Award for a po-tentially life-saving invention.

Their “PATeye” sits on the road like a normal catseye reflector, but flashes with a blue light when there is ice on the road.

It is already in use in car parks at The Hub Hornby and Westfield Riccarton, and is being tested by the NZTA for use on the roads.

It is also being tested for use in Europe, Asia and the United States.

“It is pretty exciting to be sitting in an office in Sydenham and having all this happening around us,” Mrs Martin said.

The couple moved to New Zealand from the United Kingdom 13 years ago, with their one-year-old daughter.

“At the time we said we’ll just travel New Zealand for a year, before she gets older. And we ended up staying here, to the disgust of our parents.”

At the time Mrs Martin was working as a personal assistant, and her husband was working as on shop fit outs.

“Neither of us have been to university or have any formal qualifications, but Pat has owned his own business since the age of 17 and I’ve always been entrepreneur-ial.”

She said they wanted to put some of their ideas into action.

“We’ve always been people who jump in with both feet and worry about the conse-quences later.”

She said they made a good team.“Pat doesn’t worry about anything, and

I’m probably the other side where I worry a bit too much.”

Since they started the business they have been responsible for several success-ful inventions, including the public solar charge table in the Re:Start mall.

The winners of the New Zealand Inno-vators Awards will be announced in two weeks.

Demolition of the Linwood Library on Cranley St began last week.

The library has been closed since it was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, and again by fire in 2012. It has been deemed uneconomic to repair.

The demolition is expected to take three weeks, and will be completed next month.

The temporary Linwood Library and Service Centre

will continue to operate in Eastgate Mall as the city council continues investigations into the future of the Cranley St site.

City council community fa-cilities rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said care would be taken to ensure the public was inconvenienced as little as possible while the building was being demolished.

“We are aware that the library has been an eyesore since it was damaged by fire, so this is

a sign of progress for Linwood residents. While the temporary library in the mall remains pop-ular with the community, the council will be continuing to look at how the service can be provided long-term in the area,” he said.

The city council plans to hold an expression of interest process for parties interested in leasing the empty site on a short-to-me-dium term basis until the future of the site is decided.

Library demolition begins

ROCKIN’: Year 8 Hillmorton High School students Chay Kaa-Luke, lead guitar; Jimmy Hemera, rhythm guitar; Ethan Moody, drums; and Dylan Knights, bass have formed a band, Lion’s Den. They’re just some of the year 7 and year 8 students who have taken advantage of expanded weekly music lessons this year, since the school became a composite school. The school took on more than 150 junior students in February after the closure of Branston, Linwood and Manning intermediate schools.

Artists to help victims of slavery

WORKSHOPS: Artists Against Slavery volunteers running community classes. They will lead a series of creative workshop in New Brighton next week.

Local artists hope to use their skills to help victims of human trafficking, through a se-ries of creative workshops in Phillipstown next week.

Janie Porter has mobilised a group of her friends and acquaintances, who will volunteer their skills to lead community workshops.

They will teach everything from dance and sign language, to cake decorating and painting techniques.

All the funds raised through the “Louder” workshops will go towards Hagar Inter-national Creative Arts and Recovery pro-grammes in Cambodia and Vietnam.

The programmes teach new skills to wom-en and children who have been victims of slavery.

Ms Porter said the group of friends had formed a registered charity, Artists Against Slavery.

“We’ve run art exhibitions in the past, but this will be the first time we’ve done any-thing like this.”

She expected more than 100 people at the workshops this year, and hoped the work-shops would become an annual event.

“We’re starting small this year, but if all goes well we hope to expand it next year.”

She said that all the costs of the workshops would be paid for through separate dona-tions, so all the funds raised through the workshops would go to Hagar International.

The workshops will be held from October 9 to October 11, at the Grace Vineyard City Campus on Ferry Rd.

Workshops will also be held at the Grace Vineyard Beach Campus in New Brighton.

Burwood, North New Brighton, and New Brighton Anglican parishes plan to combine, because they are losing worshippers.

Through the merger the combined parish will cover a large area along Pegasus Bay, stretching from Southshore to Spencerville. The name of the new parish has still to be decided.

Burwood Anglican Parish warden Elizabeth Hanley said the church alone had lost about 20 per cent of its members since the earth-quake.

“We have got quite a few parishioners who have gone into rest homes, and others

who have moved to other suburbs.”

She said that meant it wasn’t viable to run so many parishes.

The combined parish will be formed in November.

It will be centred on the All Saints Burwood site, because of its facilities and also because it has very little earthquake damage.

St Mark’s at Marshland and St Luke’s (above), at South New Brighton will continue as worship centres, while St Faith’s New Brighton and St Andrew’s North New Brighton will continue their community focused minis-tries during the week.

A Transitional Action Group has been formed

to work out the details of the merger, identifying the strengths of each parish, and coming up with a mission ac-tion plan for the new parish.

Sunday service times are: 8.30am at All Saints 305 New Brighton Rd; 10am at All Saints and at St Luke’s 212 Pine Ave and on the first and third Sundays at 10am at St Mark’s 338 Prestons Rd.

Family focused times: On the first Sunday of the month All Saints has a family service at 10am and St Luke’s has a Big Breakfast at the same time, where all are invited. On the fourth Sunday there is Messy Church, activities and scripture for all ages, at 4pm at All Saints. This is fol-lowed by a shared meal.

NO DEBATE ABOUT THAT: A St Andrew’s College debating team defended their title on September 19 at the Canterbury School Debating Competition final. Year 11 students April Oakley, Harrison Smith and Isabella Garbett were named the junior champions against Cashmere High School. The moot of the evening was “This house would sacrifice New Zealand’s outstanding natural landscape in order to generate clean energy and fight climate change” and the St Andrew’s team were affirmative. The economic upturn in Hornby is caus-ing one community resource to struggle.

Many of the members of the volunteer-run Hornby Toy Library were lower-income families. Many have moved away from the area since the earthquakes, due to rising rental prices.

Toy library chairwoman Amanda Cos-grove said the library was struggling to find both members and volunteers.

“We’ve lost some of our biggest market,

so we’re down to about 50 families regu-larly using the library. We do go through cycles as the children in some families outgrow the toys, and others come through, so it does come in waves. But we’d usually have at least 75 families.”

However, she said the families signing up with the library were becoming more diverse.

The toy library is currently based at Sockburn School, and is open on Thurs-days from 5.30pm to 7pm and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon.

A plan to build temporary accom-modation for the homeless in New Brighton has sparked a mixed reaction from locals.

The plans to build an accom-modation village were outlined at a city council meeting by Help for the Homeless Christchurch founder Amy Burke.

Some people are concerned the plans could create a ghetto.

But New Brighton community groups all agree on one thing – that homelessness in the east is a problem.

Just two weeks ago, Southshore residents found someone sleeping rough on the dunes.

Volunteers at St Faith’s New Brighton hold a free community lunch each week.

St Faith’s community develop-ment worker Mary McCammon said this winter they saw, on aver-age, one new person each week who was homeless.

“Every week we have people in here who are homeless or des-perately looking for accommoda-tion, or sleeping rough. It’s a huge problem.”

But although she acknowledged the problem, she had concerns about the Help for the Homeless plan.

The plan put to the city council was to build a village of separate units, with communal living spaces and gardens.

The group initially hoped to build the village in Rawhiti

Domain, but are now looking at building it on red-zone land.

When the plans were posted on social media, Ms Burke was ac-cused of creating a “ghetto”.

Ms Burke did not respond for comment.

Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone has spoken with Ms Burke about the plan.

He believed “ghettoisation” could be avoided if it was well designed.

“If it’s not done well there is a concern. Any initiative like this needs to be done well and done right the first time.”

But he believed the plan was well thought out.

Ms McCammon agreed that more accommodation for the homeless was needed.

But she was concerned about how that was done.

“Some people who are homeless are homeless because of problems like drug addictions, and for some people it is purely financial, so I don’t know if lumping everyone together would be helpful.”

She said it would be important it was well managed and well staffed.

“It would have to be some place that offered hope to people rather than making them feel like they’ve ended up at the bottom of a heap.

“You don’t need a lot of money for that but you need to be con-nected with community resources,

and have the right people behind it.”

Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board chairwoman Andrea Cummings said she did not know details of the plan.

She was concerned that as earthquake-damaged houses in the area were demolished, the homeless would become more visible.

“I’ve heard anecdotally that a lot of people have been sleeping in the abandoned houses, and obviously as they are demolished they’re going to need somewhere to go, and that’s going to add a lot of pressure.”

A report from city council staff on possible locations for a hub has been requested.

That is expected to be put to the city council in October.

Last Monday’s wild weather had fire crews zipping about to a variety of incidents including power lines down, roofing iron coming away, as occurred at the Court Theatre in Addington and at least three calls to runaway trampolines.

I’m not sure if we were dealing with the same trampoline here but if we were it seriously needs a choke chain.

One of these calls in Mairehau re-ported the trampoline stuck on the roof of a house although a later call in the same area had one lurching down the street.

The final indignity for St Albans crew on arriving back at the sta-tion late in the afternoon was to find their entry denied by a fallen tree. More work.

Another week of kitchen fires with an occupant of a house in Flay Crescent, Burnside suffering burns in trying to rectify the situation. I believe he was not seriously in-jured.

An interesting point was the call last Thursday to a house in Innes Rd where a home sprinkler system had extinguished a cooking fire.

Finally springtime also means duckling time. St Albans has already this week been called to rescue sever-al of these from a drain in Normans Rd. It appears the entire brood was returned safely to mum.

Since the earthquakes turned our lives upside down, do you have days when everything is in the “too hard” basket?

This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat.

But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”.

From Antarctica to Ireland to the Middle East: All on offer at the WEA

Learn about ‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ at the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), this term.

This two-week course on Saturday morning introduces early Antarctic exploration and its link to New Zealand. “Pressing scientific questions demanded collaboration between different countries,” says course tutor Dr Ursula Rack. “Of greater public interest, however, was the touch of adventure. World War I brought Antarctic science to a halt, with the exception of the epic Endurance expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, in which a New Zealand captain played a crucial part.”

‘Antarctic Exploration in the Heroic Age’ is one of several Saturday seminars at the WEA in October-November. Everyone is welcome to attend the courses, seminars and activity groups at the WEA which has been offering adult education in the city since 1915. The full list of courses on offer in October-November can be seen in our programme.

‘Ireland in the 21st Century’ is a Saturday afternoon seminar which critically examines the northern ‘settlement’, the southern economy and likely outcomes over the next decade. “The 21st century began with, officially at least, a great deal of promise,” says course tutor Dr Philip Ferguson. “Thirty years of armed conflict in the north came to an apparent end and the south of Ireland appeared to be entering a period of dynamic economic growth. By the end of the first decade of the century, however, things were less bright.”

Two further Saturday afternoon seminars look at recent history in Iraq, post 2003, and

the current situation in Iraq and Syria. The second afternoon seminar on November 22 seeks to highlight the ideology behind the extremist groups in Syria and Iraq and to explain how first, their doctrine differs from the other Islamic schools and second, to explain why the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq is not a sectarian war.

Rethinking Retirement is a one-day workshop for people who wish to make plans for the next stage in their lives, whether they are planning to retire or have already done; so planning for house and home needs, health needs, work (both paid and unpaid) options, networks and relationships, and achieving greater balance.
