SARATOGA SPRINGS PRESERVATION FOUNDATION AWARDS WINNER OF

PEPPERMINT PIG HUNTSARATOGA SPRINGS - On Friday, December 6, 2013 the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation (SSPF) began in the holiday season in Saratoga Springs, with the 24th Annual Candlelight House Tour, one of the City’s premier holiday traditions. For the fourth year in a row, the Candlelight House Tour included a Peppermint Pig Hunt, adding to the charm of the event. The Victorian holiday tradition of cracking a pig made of pepper-mint, while sharing fond memories of the past year, originated in Saratoga in the 1880s. Today, the world-famous yuletide candy has been revived by Saratoga Sweets in Halfmoon, allowing families to once again gath-er at the table to share the candy pigs, along with wishes and hopes for prosperity and happiness in the New Year. SSPF House Captains and their teams of volunteers hid a Peppermint Pig in each home on the tour and invited guests to participate in the hunt. Gansevoort resident, Noreen No-lan, chosen at random from the many raffle entries, won a festive gift bas-ket from Saratoga Sweets, which included a Peppermint Pig along with other candies and confections. Ticket sales and Silent Auction bids from the 2013 Candlelight House Tour support SSPF’s ongoing educational pro-grams and efforts to preserve the unique architectural, landscaped, and cultural heritage of Saratoga Springs. Thank you for support and Happy Holidays! SCHUYLERVILLE - The New Year Neon Mocktail Dance Party is an event scheduled for tweens (8 - 12 years of age) on Saturday, January 18th from 6 - 9 pm at the Youth Center in Fort Hardy Park and is sponsored by the Greater Schuylerville Youth Program. WILTON - The Jones Road Office of Saratoga National Bank and Trust Company is collecting winter coats and other cold-weather clothing items to benefit the Adirondack Vets House. Donations for this seventh annual coat drive will be accepted through the first week in January. They can be dropped off during regular business hours at the Jones Road Office, locat-ed at the Stewart’s Plaza on the corner of Route 50 and Jones Road in Wilton. Cudney’s Cleaners has offered to clean the donated items at no cost, and volunteers will deliver them to the Vets House. Adirondack Vets House is a nonprofit tran-sitional facility for homeless veterans located in Glens Falls. SARATOGA CO. - Saratoga County RPC, through its VetHelp division, is pleased to announce the start of a new program to aid veterans and their families in their struggle to main-tain permanent housing. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program can provide monetary relief as well as extensive case management for veteran families that are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Tempo-rary fi nancial assistance is available for rental assistance, utili-ties fees, security deposit, moving costs, emergency supplies, child care and transportation. Case management and referral services include health care, daily living activities, fi nancial planning, transportation, income support and legal assis-tance. The goal of the SSVF program is to promote housing stability among very low income Veteran families who reside in or are transitioning to permanent housing in the follow-ing New York State counties; Washington, Warren, Saratoga, Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Schoharie. cartridges, cell phones, small electronics, and lap-tops from the community and send the waste prod-ucts to FundingFactory in exchange for their choice of technology and recre-

RedRed is a very handsome and well-mannered Bloodhound. He is a fit ‘n trim 90 pounds and is believed to be 3-5 years old. Red is neutered, up to date on his shots, and micro-chipped. Red’s foster was told by his previous owner that Red was trained in Search & Rescue. He knows all of the standard commands and likely others related to S&R. He seems to get along with everyone: people/kids, cats, and other dogs. Red is available for adoption or for foster (his current foster home is 1 hour away from us, which makes it harder

to get him to adoption events).

Sam is as friendly as he is fluffy (and he is VERY fluffy), is neutered, and up to date on his shots. This 8-year old handsome

Maine Coon mix is a charming, well-mannered companion who loves headbutts and being scratched under the chin; in return, he will

gently lick your hand. He is very active, clean, and a purr machine. Sam will warm your heart and your home!

Gus is an 8-year old Border Collie mix who is neutered and up to date on his shots. He is a smart, active dog who would love someone to run or hike with. Gus loves to be with his owners the most. He

enjoys going for long walks, hiking, and playing fetch with any type of ball. He is a very loyal and protective dog who is under voice command. He loves to herd his family while running off his leash.

He enjoys playing fetch and learns very quickly. He understands the words- come, sit, stay, wait, down, bed, and outside. After a long ac-tive day, Gus will curl up next to you at night; he loves taking naps by the fire. He will also put himself to bed if he gets too tired! He sleeps on either a dog bed, human bed, or by the bedroom door and loves to sleep in! Gus is good with other dogs and would do

best in a home without young children.

Marcy is a 3-year old, gray long-haired spayed female who is up to date on her shots. Marcy is small for her age, causing

many to consider her a kitten. She gets along with everybody and can fits in any environment. Marcy has a very small tail that seems to be only half as long as it should be. She loves attention and will just curl up in your lap and hang out with

you. For the last few years, Marcy had been living outside in an abandoned barn with a colony of other cats. She welcomed the chance to come inside and be fed and cared for by her foster family. Please give Miss Marcy the great life she deserves.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. When rating sedans, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, accident avoid-ance, overall MPG, and other qualities each factor into a vehicle’s overall score.

Sedans are categorized based on size, with vehicles broken down into small, midsize and large categories. Sedans also are classifi ed by their styles, such as upscale, luxury, sports, and even fuel-effi cient. Overall, sedans remain a popular choice because they can provide a good balance of cost, comfort and effi ciency.
