s.p.a.c.e is a volunteer organisation. Each individual who joins us does so because they are inspired to make a difference in their community. Whether it be once a year, once a month, once a week or once a day, s.p.a.c.e volunteers are invaluable to our mission of activating inclusive communities. Help us spread the spirit and become a volunteer today.

In 2008 Krista Dislers met Alissa Phillips. Krista was working at NAB and Alissa was giving her colleagues a talk about s.p.a.c.e The next week Krista attended a Big Night Out. Krista was so inspired by the spirit of the s.p.a.c.e community that she has attended every Big Night Out since.

In addition to tearing up the dance floor once a month Krista has extended her commitment to s.p.a.c.e and now sits on the Board of Directors working with Alissa and the rest of the team to motivate and recruit new volunteers.

FACT: Krista is responsible for coming up with the “V” for Volunteering campaign! Even the Prime Minister of Australia has done the “V”!

The s.p.a.c.e board of directors is a volunteer board made up of young professionals all looking to make a contribution to their community. Alissa, Nicole, Geof, Krista and Ryan have been on the board since 2008 and were all involved in the creation of s.p.a.c.e strategy, the business plan, hosting of events, finance development and negotiations.

The s.p.a.c.e board value spending time with the people who use s.p.a.c.e. To really understand where the organisation was heading the leadership team had to know where our stakeholders were coming from, said Alissa, s.p.a.c.e Founder and Executive Director. Therefore, being a volunteer member of the board means keeping connected to the the people that are accessing our centre.

Finally, all board members describe themselves as life long learners. To encourage this the board engages in professional development. PD comes in the form of information sharing, networking, attending functions and events, supervision and reflection.

s.p.a.c.e is looking to replenish the board at the end of 2010. Are you interested in being the change you see in the world?

The Community Centre Reference Group is an advisory group who will provide recommendations into the development of the s.p.a.c.e Community Centre. This group work with Chairperson James Dale and s.p.a.c.e Directors Alissa and Nicole.

The purpose of the s.p.a.c.e Community Centre Reference Group is to:

• Have a ‘community voice’ to assist the s.p.a.c.e in making progressive and inclusive decision regarding the use of the s.p.a.c.e centre.

• Increase active participation of community members.• Ensure a cross section of the community is

represented so as to ensure a variety of activities and opportunities are catered to.

The Reference Group members are volunteers, representing groups or organisations that will use the Centre or have a particular interest in the Centre because they live in the immediate area. s.p.a.c.e invites specific individuals to ensure a diverse and fair representation of these groups.

In order to allow all stake-holder groups are represented fairly and with some sense of authority Reference Group Subdivisions have been established. They include: Council, Inclusive Design, Disability Strategy, Community Consultation and Education.

Reference Group meetings take place on Mondays nights throughout the year. Check the Calendar for dates.

Luke Robertson was in the midst of completing his year 12 studies when he asked to come volunteer at s.p.a.c.e. Luke volunteered to shoot the 2009 Big Night Out calendar. This project would mean that s.p.a.c.e had a great calendar and Luke had a great portfolio piece.

Luke has since been accepted into QUT studying the Creative Industries. His experience with volunteering at s.p.a.c.e was so rewarding that he is now the official s.p.a.c.e photographer capturing all our major events.

Nicole Border, 24, UQ Graduate, QUT Masters Student volunteered at s.p.a.c.e programs and now writes and runs her own program - Activate.

Ali Phillips, 18, QUT Dance Student, attended Big Night Out regularly and then went on to create Bust A Move Dance Classes that run weekly at s.p.a.c.e

One of the biggest challenges to being a new organisation is professionalism. Image is everything when you are trying to get the attention of stakeholders and s.p.a.c.e wanted to get it right. Enter Christopher Johnson.

Chris was 19 years old when attended a s.p.a.c.e function by invitation of a friend. Chris immediately spotted that s.p.a.c.e needed some help in the graphic design domain and started helping us build our brand. Throughout 2009 s.p.a.c.e was supported by Chris to implement the designs and graphics built for us by our web designers Big Fish. He also created all the posters for our main events.

In addition to his professional skills Chris maintained from the beginning of his volunteering that in order to represent our stakeholders he would have to know them. Chris attended all bar 2 of the 12 Big Night Out discos in 2009.

Cara was a student of the Creative Industries at QUT. Her assignment was to create an advertising campaign around the launch of a product or event. Cara worked with s.p.a.c.e to deliver on the 2008 Big Night Out calendar and in doing so got a glimpse at work in the community.

Some of the best volunteers we have at s.p.a.c.e are the ones who spend time. They are the people who turn up with no other motives then to be engaged in activities and participate with people. They are the ones who do not lead out the front of the crowd but rather lead by example and role model to others how to have a good time. They are the lifeblood of s.p.a.c.e and without them we would not be able to do what we do.

They dance, play sport, listen, laugh, encourage, watch, follow, enjoy, engage, enact. They are themselves at all times. They are volunteers.

To the majority of Australian’s Allan Border is an Australian cricketing legend. To s.p.a.c.e he is just part of the family. Board members Nicole Border and Alissa Phillips grew up watching their fathers play cricket. It was an exciting day to see their dads reunite on the cricket field at the 2008 Open Day when the men came face to face once more in the name of chairty for a cricket match (Allan lost to Ray’s team!)

Allan has contributed his time and profile generously to supporting the young team behind s.p.a.c.e and we thank him.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to make everything up yourself. We are here to help

by providing visual aids and presentations to assist you.

Claire and Hannah had been attending s.p.a.c.e fundraisers for 2 years when they

decided to up the anti and host a fundriaser of their own! The girls invited 100 of their

closest friends to a trivia night hosted at the local Grammer School. Together they raised

$4,000 and spread the s.p.a.c.e spirit to 100 new volunteers.

s.p.a.c.e likes to gloat that we get our volunteers from the 4th largest country in the world - facebook!

In all seriousness; social media is revolutionising how we connect and communicate. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Delicious...you name it we are on it. Facebook alone helps us to raise awareness of events, build hype and contact volunteers. Youtube allows us to showcase our work visually through the medium of film and Twitter is a great way to quickly update stakeholders on the run. s.p.a.c.e volunteers who have a particular interest in the online environment are admins on these sites and help keep our profiles up to date and in the loop. Erica studied a Bachelor of Communications at university. Upon looking for work she stumbled across a position at National Australia Bank and has been working there as an Associate ever since. Although Erica enjoys her work at NAB she loves volunteering at s.p.a.c.e and using her skills in communication.

Erica helps with the web copy, edits the newsletters and last year wrote all the questions for our Trivia Fundraiser.
